Looking at the majestic Saber-Toothed Tiger just half a foot away, Xiao Qiang was dumbfounded and dared not move. Oh heavens, what did I do to deserve this? Why does it keep bothering me?
The Saber-Toothed Tiger raised its front paws and leaned forward as if sniffing... This sniff sent Xiao Qiang's heart racing. "I am your savior; you can't eat me," he said tremulously to himself. To his surprise, after a quick sniff, the tiger let out a thunderous roar and leaped over his head in a sudden bound.
After soaring over Xiao Qiang, the Saber-Toothed Tiger unleashed a few powerful roars at the stunned Sun Tribe, who stood frozen in fear. It showed no intention of attacking but took a small step back, its massive body shimmering with iridescent colors before it bounded away along the same path it had come.
With the Saber-Toothed Tiger gone, tensions flared again between Xiao Qiang and the Sun Tribe.
Suddenly, the Sun Tribe Leader waved his stick, silencing the tribe members who were ready to attack. The leader leaned forward and asked Xiao Qiang, "How strange; you can speak to the saber-tooth?"
What puzzled Xiao Qiang even more was that the Sun Tribe could speak the language of the Waji Mountain People. He hadn’t even had time to respond.
"How do you know our language?" Old Dada Mishu asked curiously.
"A Waji Mountain People taught me," the leader replied, formally welcoming both him and Old Dada Mishu with great respect.
What seemed like two opposing forces quickly dissolved into a warm and friendly reception ceremony as the Sun Tribe warmly welcomed Xiao Qiang and Old Dada Mishu.
"Waji Mountain People? Amayi's father?" Xiao Qiang pondered over the leader's earlier words as he looked at Old Dada Mishu. "Did he not abandon his people?"
"Alas!" Old Dada Mishu sighed. "Amayi's father did not abandon his people; he left in search of a new way to survive. He asked me not to reveal the truth for fear that once his tribe learned of his departure, they would follow him. He possesses the White Reed Staff and is the leader of the entire Waji Mountain Tribe."
"That's so touching."
Chili peppers, corn on the cob, and fluffy white rice felt familiar to Xiao Qiang. He couldn't bear to eat them; instead, he enjoyed simply smelling them.
However, under the watchful gaze of the Sun Tribe Leader, they assumed he didn't like these foods. When they saw Xiao Qiang gradually eating them, a thunderous cheer erupted as they celebrated their newfound kinship.
The Sun Tribe Leader was named Wapu, and he held great respect for Xiao Qiang. Wapu was the only one who spoke the Waji Mountain language; meanwhile, an elder kept whispering something to him.
Then Wapu translated for Xiao Qiang: "This is our Sun Tribe's sage; he says you are a Saint sent by heaven to rescue us and grant us freedom."
Xiao Qiang did not understand what Wapu meant. He turned to Old Dada Mishu, who replied, "Perhaps they have answers for you."
Wapu understood Old Dada Mishu's words and smiled, saying, "Yes, I will take you to see something."
The temple of the Sun Tribe worshipped Kua Fu Chasing the Sun. According to legend, their people had darkened skin from being closest to the sun while chasing it. At the bottom of the grand mural of Kua Fu Chasing the Sun, there was a round sphere adorned with a strange pattern.
The pattern depicted a Saber-Toothed Tiger alongside a human. The imagery inevitably reminded one of the earlier scene between Xiao Qiang and the Saber-Toothed Tiger. To be able to communicate with what they referred to as the Toothy Divine Beast was extraordinary.
Immediately, all the members of the Sun Tribe prostrated themselves before Xiao Qiang, seeing him as their deity and savior! How bizarre! Even more astonishing was how quickly the Sun Tribe spread the news.
They proclaimed that a Saint had appeared—the Saint being someone who could speak with the sharp-toothed beast. The Saint would lead them in search of their kidnapped family members and help them resist the tyranny of their oppressors.
Later, Xiao Qiang learned that Wapu's son was among those taken. The man from Waji Mountain who came to the Sun Tribe was indeed Amayi's father. However, he did not escape the fate of being captured; he, along with other members of the Sun Tribe, had been abducted.
Wapu explained that Amayi's father and his people were taken by many large birds that came via waterways. They were then sent to the land of their captors to work as laborers indefinitely.
Wapu even sketched the appearance of the captors and models of those large birds.
The call from the Sun Tribe astonished both Xiao Qiang and Old Dada Mishu. In an instant, tens of thousands gathered at the reception area of the Sun Tribe. Among them were elves, Dwarves, and members of the Wayin Tribe, who lived beneath the sun mountain and rarely saw sunlight throughout the seasons. So many people convened at this location, ready to follow Xiao Qiang's lead—how magical!
However, among them was a powerful tribe that questioned Xiao Qiang's legendary mission. This dominant tribe was known as the Wai Tribe. The leader of the Wai Tribe approached him directly, scrutinizing his seemingly frail figure from head to toe while muttering in a language they could not understand.
Wapu hurriedly translated: "He says you are just an immature half-grown child."
Xiao Qiang replied, "Tell him not to judge a person's abilities by their appearance."
Wapu conveyed this message to the Wai Tribe Leader.
Xiao Qiang added, "Tell them I will bring their people back."
Wapu translated the words for the Wai Tribe Leader. The Wai Tribe Leader nodded, casting a look of approval at Xiao Qiang, and swung the stick in his hand against the ground, producing a dull thud.
Then everyone began to strike the ground with their sticks, creating a thunderous sound like drums. The scene was magnificent, the momentum overwhelming, as the horns of heroes and heroines echoed through the skies.
In this way, the Sun Tribe held a farewell ceremony. They leaned their heads together, as if in mourning, but more like offering each other blessings and comfort. Only Wapu stood aside; he had no family left—his wife was killed by raiders, and his son was taken away by them.
Xiao Qiang nodded at him, offering silent encouragement.
As Xiao Qiang gathered various tribespeople to prepare for the challenge against the raiders' stronghold far across the Harsala Great Desert, what they called the divine realm of their gods, a strange figure stood in the shadows where sunlight could not reach—a Mothman.
Xiao Qiang led the way, with Wapu guiding them. A massive crowd surged forward, rushing toward the legendary place where the great bird was said to take flight. A river wound like a ribbon, with several large ships floating upon it, their sails billowing… Xiao Qiang was speechless; the great bird they spoke of was not a bird from the dense forest but rather a sailing ship.
On the ship stood a throng of captives and raiders.
Xiao Qiang waved his stick and shouted, “Jill!”
The ship had already set sail. Jill saw the crowd above the desert, among them was him… Tears welled up in his eyes as he responded, “Wildfire must come to save me.”
