"Are you thinking about your friend?" Wapu sat cross-legged next to Xiao Qiang and sighed, "I understand how you feel, my friend."
"I'm thinking about Amayi's father. Why haven't I seen him?"
"He has gone, buried in the desert like all the unfortunate ones."
"How do you know?"
"It was his son who told me."
"What am I going to tell Amayi?" Xiao Qiang lowered his head, scooping up a handful of sand and squeezing it tightly, watching the grains cascade down through his fingers.
"Amayi is very strong."
"Yes."
"You are the Wildfire Sage of the Waji Mountain People, the savior of our people."
Xiao Qiang forced a smile and grabbed another handful of sand, slowly releasing it into the wind.
Old Dada Mishu approached solemnly, presenting the White Reed Staff to Xiao Qiang with great reverence. "Saint, this is your staff of authority. Please accept it."
Xiao Qiang hesitated, but Wapu urged him earnestly, "Accept it! The warriors are still waiting for you." Meeting Wapu's encouraging gaze and recalling the sacrifices made by their kin, he nodded firmly. His eyes were resolute as he took the White Reed Staff in both hands, feeling an immense pressure weigh down on him like a thousand-pound burden.
As he held the White Reed Staff and passed by the seated or reclining members of various tribes, his flowing figure became a silent call to action. One by one, they stood up, casting him looks of deep respect.
Standing before so many of his people, Xiao Qiang felt their admiration for his indomitable spirit and commanding presence.
He raised the White Reed Staff high and proclaimed loudly, "The Mammoth is the king of beasts; compared to it, we are so small. Yet we have triumphed over them. Because we are united in heart and soul, sharing breath and fate, there is no obstacle that can defeat us. When the sun rises, we will join our brothers and sisters in the celestial prison to overthrow the evil False God together."
Xiao Qiang's words ignited a wave of powerful cheers that echoed through the air.
"Yahouhou~ Yahouhou~ Yahouhou."
As the sun rose, activity began to stir around the pyramid. The wicked servants of the False God sawed off the Mammoth's tusks, enslaving them as if they were mere tools.
The poor Mammoth held a place in the hearts of the Waji Mountain People second only to that of the Toothy Divine Beast. Their conquest of the Mammoth was not driven by malicious intent or greed; it was merely a contest of strength against overwhelming odds.
However, the scene that unfolded before Xiao Qiang and the others was repulsive.
The raiders not only enslaved the Mammoths but also tormented them in various ways, sawing off their tusks to exchange for wealth that did not belong to them.
The Mammoths endured the lash of whips that sliced through the air, their massive trunks curling down as they let out heavy, resigned sighs and cries. They moved their enormous toes, their clumsy bodies trudging heavily as they dragged thick stones back and forth on the sloped platforms.
The Mammoths were dragging a type of large transport vehicle known as the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse, which featured a rotating axle. By removing the pin from this axle, they could unload the ropes that were fastened around the Mammoth's shoulders.
Some of the tribespeople, having received a signal, began to stealthily remove the axle pins while the Thugs were absent.
Xiao Qiang and his companions had already infiltrated the castle, which stood amidst a vast desert. The only sign of life was a winding Serpent Head Canal that flowed through the area. Here, it was the realm of raiders; every day bore witness to their brutality, with death constantly threatening those who labored endlessly.
Xiao Qiang spotted Amayi and Wapu's son among the workers and hurried over, quietly spreading the message of rebellion among the many laborers.
A Wai person buried Stick, who had brought Hunter into the castle, in sand before merging him into the labor force.
Xiao Qiang said to Amayi, "Amayi, today you must be a brave Hunter."
"Really?" Amayi exclaimed, excitement coursing through him.
Behind them came the shouts of Thugs, accompanied by the crack of whips; anyone who slowed down would face severe punishment. Xiao Qiang and Amayi quickly dispersed as he searched for Jill. If all went well and plans remained unchanged, he intended to meet with the Mammoth leader soon.
Jill had been forced to crawl before the False God and had not risen since. Draped in bizarre garments that hung like a curtain concealing an ugly face, a deity slowly emerged from behind a tent.
The Divine Messenger covered his face with his fingers, appearing servile as he humbly addressed the god. "It is her." The god approached Jill with labored steps.
From behind a thin veil of sand, a pair of lifeless eyes stared at the girl crawling on the ground. "How could her bracelet possibly bear Hunter markings? You must be mistaken."
"She is unusual; a Waji Mountain person has been following her," the Divine Messenger said tremulously.
"What else is there?"
"That Waji Mountain person has rallied many warriors."
"Oh? Where are these warriors?"
"They should have entered the desert."
"They can walk out of the desert? Unless aided by a divine beast." Jill listened to the hoarse screeching sound, which didn't resemble human speech at all; it was more like a crow covered in black feathers, making a harsh, grating noise.
Jill scoffed inwardly, "Hmph, so this 'god' is truly foolish. The Saint of the Waji Mountain People is right under your nose, and yet you still speak so brazenly."
On the slope, the laborers were pulling on thick ropes, causing the Wooden Ox and Flowing Horse wheels to roll. Those who recognized Xiao Qiang saw him approaching the Mammoth's head with a wooden stick in hand.
This was a long-standing challenge between the Waji Mountain People and the Mammoths; the leader of the Waji Mountain People would raise a wooden stick to provoke the head Mammoth, aiming to anger the herd.
Thousands of Laborers strained to pull the cart wheels, and some clever Laborers began to take action. They removed the last axle pin, causing heavy stones on the slope to tumble down uncontrollably.
Xiao Qiang raised his wooden stick to challenge the head Mammoth, which reared up its front foot and let out a roar. The other Mammoths had already been unshackled from their wooden yokes and immediately scattered in all directions.
The timing was perfect; the rebellion was successful. Xiao Qiang was overjoyed and swung his wooden stick at a nearby shouting Thug. In an instant, chaos erupted as voices filled the air, and the entire False God Dynasty was thrown into turmoil.
The Thugs wielding whips saw this scene and not only did they not retreat, but they also lashed out fiercely at the laboring tribespeople. The laborers, filled with rage, picked up defensive weapons to fight back against the whip-wielding Thugs.
The slope was in disarray. Inside the god's palace, the Divine Messenger was still scheming about how to deal with the incoming Hunters. A Thug hurriedly climbed over, reporting that the labor slaves had revolted outside.
