Lin Yu arrived at work to find numerous undercover agents outside. On the road, there were suspected cases of the Incubation Period virus, and those who had not received the Gene Protein injection would be apprehended for conservative treatment as soon as they were scanned with infrared X-ray technology.
Conservative treatment, in simple terms, meant detaining suspected cases for inhumane experiments. They did not want to waste the Gene Protein on patients who had already contracted the virus; instead, they preferred to use their bodies for the development and research of new projects.
The virus was continuously mutating and evolving. Even Xiao Qiang's physique and special abilities would face devastating attacks. Lin Yu felt utterly hopeless; she had no choice but to keep Xiao Qiang under soft detention. The situation outside was complicated, making it difficult for him. Remembering his helplessness and confusion from last night, she couldn't help but sob quietly as she gripped the steering wheel in her car.
Suddenly, there was a rapid knocking on the car window. Startled, she quickly looked up and wiped away her tears, seeing a man outside whose face was partially covered by his collar.
"Help me," he pleaded, pulling down his collar to reveal a pale face marred by signs of viral outbreak, with blood seeping from the corners of his eyes.
"Get away!" Lin Yu shouted, starting the car and speeding off. In the rearview mirror, she saw the man who had been knocking on her window being pinned to the ground by several agents in trench coats.
This virus, known as V2 Incubation Period, exhibited flu-like symptoms in its early stages before developing into red pupils, high fever, and bleeding from the eyes.
It originated from a mutated N1 virus that lay dormant within the human body. When genetic damage occurred or cellular imbalances arose, it would proliferate wildly within the body. The human body would then explode like a balloon filled with hydrogen— not in a literal sense but rather as the virus hidden inside erupted.
The virus consumed all remaining healthy cells, taking over every branch of the body. Once infected, patients lost their sanity and control over their actions; their eyes turned blood-red, and they began to crave blood and flesh.
Lin Yu's hospital had established a research team focused on the V2 virus, led by her foreign Ph.D. advisor known in China as Li Wen.
Li Wen was the head of the V2 virus research team but refused Lin Yu's request to join. He warned her about the risks involved in studying such a virus. As her car slowly glided into the wall-mounted garage and entered the elevator, she pondered deeply while overlooking the crowd entering and exiting the hospital.
Her purpose for coming to the hospital was to ensure that if Xiao Qiang showed any signs of abnormality, she could act quickly. At least it provided her with some psychological comfort and assurance; under her close watch and protection, his condition remained stable.
However, even outside, she still felt uneasy about Xiao Qiang. He often appeared calm but could unexpectedly act out in surprising ways.
When the elevator doors opened, Lin Yu unexpectedly ran into Li Wen, Ph.D.
"Hi, Professor," she greeted him while contemplating whether to ask again about joining the V2 virus research team.
"Hello there, beautiful." Li Wen was the kind of carefree optimist who didn't know what worry was. He looked at Lin Yu with a smile, as if he could see right through her thoughts, and said, "I have a lot on my plate today, so if you need me, just leave a message."
Before Lin Yu could respond, Li Wen had already cut her off. She forced a smile and said, "Teacher, don't work too hard."
"Hard? Not at all! Just look at my energy!" Li Wen strode ahead confidently, slipping into the office of the virus research team. The door closed behind him, blocking Lin Yu's view of his sturdy back.
Lin Yu continued walking forward when her earpiece crackled to life; it was the nurse who supplied her with information.
"Is there something wrong?"
"Lin Jie, can you come over for a moment?"
The nurse sounded anxious, prompting Lin Yu to glance at the time. "Okay, I'll report in and be right there." She walked over to the sign-in station equipped with a retinal scanner.
A simulated female voice greeted her: "Good morning, Dr. Lin Yu."
She turned right into the corridor and soon reached the nurse's station.
The nurse appeared relaxed, glancing around until she spotted Lin Yu and approached her. Leaning in close to whisper in her ear, she said, "Things aren't looking good; my supply channel has been blocked."
Hearing this made Lin Yu's heart tighten. The last thing she wanted was for something to go wrong here; this was their only supply line.
"What happened?"
"It seems to be an issue with market prices; they might raise them. Plus, the higher-ups are holding back supplies, so we can only receive them in limited quantities on a schedule."
"Those unscrupulous merchants..."
“Shh! Be careful.”
“It’s fine. As long as you guarantee me the supply, no matter how high the price is, I want it. Money is not an issue.”
“Alright, then. Just like that.” The nurse said, pretending to adjust her clothing as she continued, “If anything goes wrong, you can contact your teacher, Li Wen. They are researching the V2 virus and have a vaccine ready.”
“Really?” Lin Yu thought for a moment; she couldn’t do that. Researching such a virus was dangerous at any time. That was the group’s safety net; she couldn’t be too selfish.
“I can’t, but thank you anyway. I have an event coming up, so please help me get more supplies.”
“We can’t trade here anymore; come to my house…” As she spoke, the nurse handed Lin Yu a small box. A few people walked by from the corridor; they were hospital staff. “Doctor Lin, remember to take it twice a day and pay attention to the instructions.”
“Thank you.” Lin Yu grabbed the box and stuffed it into her pocket before turning to leave. What should she do? Without the research team developing a way to deal with the V2 virus, Xiao Qiang could only rely on the Protein Vaccine to control it.
If supplies ran out completely, they would be left with nothing. Lin Yu suddenly felt anxious as she walked through the corridor when someone greeted her…
“Hi, Doctor Lin.”
Distracted by her thoughts, she didn’t hear the greeting.
The person who called her paused for a moment, stopping in their tracks to look at Lin Yu.
Her mind was filled with thoughts of Xiao Qiang. What was he doing now? Would he run away? How could he go to work like this? She was troubled. It was the nurse's earlier words that had ruined her mood.
As Lin Yu had said, Xiao Qiang was unwilling to just sit there. He had to find a way out; the refrigerator was password-protected and needed to be locked before he could leave.
The outside world felt strange and eerie. There were few passersby, all hurriedly moving along, creating a stark contrast with the natural tones of the wilderness in ancient times; it was two entirely different worlds.
Xiao Qiang slipped his hands into his pockets and walked casually down the street. Little did he know that just two seconds after stepping outside, a man in a custom trench coat and sunglasses had begun to follow him.
The clumsy attempt at stalking was easily noticed by him.
Upon realizing he was being followed, Xiao Qiang quickened his pace and darted around a corner.
The stalker, seeing his target vanish, was unwilling to give up and hurriedly quickened his steps. However, as he reached the corner, he was caught off guard by Xiao Qiang, who had been hiding there.
"Who are you? Why are you following me?" Xiao Qiang demanded.
The man revealed his identification—he was a voluntary inspector, specifically searching for V2 virus carriers on the streets.
Xiao Qiang paused for a moment, feeling for the identification hidden in his clothing. To his surprise, Lin Yu had already placed a card in his clothes identifying him as a retired disabled second-class soldier.
"Are you one of the heroes from Tomorrow's Battle?" the man extended his pale hand and said, "It's an honor to meet you."
"You’re not too shabby yourself, a loyal servant of the people," Xiao Qiang replied as he shook the man's hand. "You can check me if you want."
"No need," the man said with an embarrassed smile before quickly walking away from Xiao Qiang.
