Lin Yu watched the surveillance screen and saw two tall men in black suits standing at the door. They appeared refined yet exuded an intimidating presence. At first glance, their attire made it clear they were undercover agents; their presence here was no coincidence. There might be others lurking behind them, all armed with deadly weapons, waiting for the right moment.
The visitors knew the owner of the house was observing them, and one of them raised his identification, signaling her to open the door.
"Visitors who mean no harm don't come unannounced," she thought, but she had no choice but to answer the door. "Hello, may I ask who you are?" Lin Yu feigned innocence, fully aware they were undercover agents.
The man’s gaze swept through the half-open door behind her. "Can we come in and take a look?"
"On what grounds? I don’t welcome strangers barging in here." Since they refused to reveal their true identities, Lin Yu felt justified in denying them entry.
"This is my identification." Lin Yu took a closer look and gasped; they were from the International Alliance Investigation Bureau. She stepped back, and inside the room, M and Luo Wei sat upright on the sofa, nervously watching the unexpected guests enter.
There were only three of them inside. They presented their identification to the agents from the Bureau and then underwent questioning. The rest of the agents entered the house, inspecting each bedroom under the pretense of ensuring the safety of residents.
The bathroom was empty, as was the washroom; they even searched through the kitchen and basement, checking under beds. Watching their rough search behavior made Lin Yu furious but unable to voice her anger; she could only hope they would leave quickly after finishing their search.
"Recently, there have been many bizarre cases of masked murders. If you notice anything unusual, be sure to report it immediately," one imposing investigator said, his gaze lingering on Lin Yu's face for a long time. He then scribbled something on a piece of paper and handed it to her. "This is the reporting hotline."
Lin Yu accepted it with a faint tone. "Okay, thank you."
After sending off the investigators, Lin Yu's heart raced uncontrollably. She wasn't scared; she just found it strange that these uninvited guests appeared right after Xiao Qiang went missing last night. And that guy who handed her the paper—his hawk-like eyes had scrutinized her for too long, leaving her feeling uneasy.
"I can't stay here any longer; I might need to move in with Xiao Qiang," Lin Yu told her friends.
"Where do you plan to go?" Luo Wei asked eagerly. "I have a villa in the suburbs; it's secluded and has a nice view. Why don't you stay there for a while?"
"Yes, that villa is great! I've been there before; it's peaceful with no disturbances. The residents are sparse, and you can see a beautiful lake just by opening the window," M chimed in, trying to support Luo Wei's suggestion.
"Okay." Lin Yu walked to the attic door and opened it, calling out to Xiao Qiang, who was pressed against the wall like a spider on a web. "They've left."
Xiao Qiang came down and brushed off some dust from his palms. "They shouldn't be here for me."
"Wrong; they pretended to be searching for rioters, but their real intention was to find you."
"How do you know?" The two continued discussing as they walked together.
"From the look in one of their eyes, I knew."
"Trusting my wife won't be wrong. So, what's our next step?"
"I already have a plan, don't worry."
The two of them arrived in the living room, revisiting old discussions. Luo Wei's suggestion was good; they could hide out in the suburbs for a while. If that group of people wasn't there for Xiao Qiang, then they could easily move back in.
However, moving was quite a hassle, but Luo Wei had plenty of ways to handle it.
Lin Yu and Xiao Qiang just needed to pay attention to safety on the road; everything else wasn't too difficult.
Having such a loyal friend in an unfamiliar environment wasn't a bad thing. There was no need to express gratitude verbally. Instead, they showed it through actions. After agreeing on a moving date, when Luo Wei and M said goodbye and headed home, Lin Yu gave them both a heartfelt hug.
Xiao Qiang watched them leave and frowned as he asked, "After moving, will you still go to work?"
"Of course," Lin Yu replied.
"Isn't the commute going to be longer?"
"What's there to fear with a car?" Lin Yu thought Xiao Qiang was becoming overly sentimental. Did he really need to worry about such trivial matters? "It's not an issue at all, so don’t worry."
The next day at the hospital, something significant happened.
Those infected with the Zombie V2 virus were looked down upon by normal people, much like how AIDS patients faced discrimination and were shunned. When the hospital established the Zombie V2 Virus Relief Center, the military stationed personnel there for half a month. After setting up a voluntary testing station, they withdrew their troops from the hospital.
The hospital was a place bustling with people; those rioters wouldn't dare come here to kill! Yet often, unguarded areas became targets for these attackers.
While on night duty, Lin Yu entered his office and took out patient cards to review recent cases. Nurse Nanning was beside him, analyzing details and informing him about any patients showing unusual symptoms.
Suddenly, the office door burst open with force as two Masked Men entered. They brandished homemade guns and knives, startling Nurse Nanning. The cold, dark muzzle of a gun was pressed against Lin Yu's temple almost immediately.
"You must need courage and perseverance every day facing these zombies?"
"They are not zombies," Lin Yu said calmly, her disdain evident.
"Do you even know what you're doing? You're aiding the enemy, you're creating murderers. A single infected person can attack five people within half an hour after the virus outbreak. This is your humanitarian aid?"
"They are still in the incubation stage. They are human too; every citizen has the right to exist and survive, don't they?"
"Don't provoke me. Be careful of my limits; angering me won't end well for you." The man pressed his gun against Lin Yu's temple, not moving it an inch. Beside them, Nanning was sweating profusely, his legs trembling.
Outside, a masked man shouted to the one holding Lin Yu hostage, "Go, go, go!"
The masked man holding Lin Yu snarled, "Consider yourselves lucky today." With that, he took off running.
Lin Yu knew it was over; those patients... Tears filled her eyes as she ran frantically toward the ward. Sure enough, a bloody scene awaited her—every infected person in the ward had been slashed or shot dead.
She collapsed to the floor with a thud. Nanning cried out in despair as he looked at the innocent child who was still unaware of what had happened. Dazed and dizzy, she stumbled toward the bedside. Li Wen and other responsible personnel arrived and were stunned by the horrific news unfolding before them.
This only intensified Lin Yu's desire to move away. Before relocating, she visited a nurse who supplied her with a meager five Vaccine Proteins and informed Teacher Li Wen over the phone that she would be taking a day off.
