After Lin Yu left for work, Xiao Qiang took a tube of Vaccine Protein from the smart safe and injected it into his arm's capillary. To his surprise, after days of moving and spending time with Luo Wei, he found that blood no longer held any allure for him.
The entire day was consumed by dull television programs, and suddenly, Xiao Qiang felt inexplicably downcast, letting out a heavy sigh. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and gazed at the shimmering water surface. As dusk approached, just as he was feeling bored, his phone rang. Thinking it was Lin Yu, he answered only to find it was Luo Wei.
Luo Wei invited him to a nearby club to play some billiards. The club was crowded, and they had to wait for their turn. They each ordered a Parisian Flower.
Xiao Qiang raised his glass with a beaming smile and said, "Looks like I'm lucky."
"We're both lucky," Luo Wei clinked his glass against Xiao Qiang's and added, "Lin Yu is very strong."
"She has always been that way."
"Are you feeling insecure?" Luo Wei stood up, looking at Xiao Qiang with a complex expression. "Here's to our future."
"Thank you, my friend."
After parting ways with Luo Wei and leaving the club, night had just begun to unfold. The cold wind hit his face; slightly tipsy, he stumbled a bit as he pulled up his collar and headed home alone.
The night in the suburbs had a serene beauty that he cherished. He loved this quiet little town and its laid-back lifestyle, holding his breath to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere as light and shadow flowed gently. There was none of the clamor of big cities; people leaned at angles, solitary figures drifting forward while the sounds of roosters crowing and dogs barking filled the air.
Luo Wei's villa was one of the finest houses in this small town, situated near a lake where few people passed by. The path Xiao Qiang walked now was lined with swaying grass, occasionally interrupted by an insect flying towards him.
He swatted at it randomly but felt it escape through his fingers. Opening his hand, he stared at his empty palm and smiled foolishly, suddenly nostalgic for days gone by.
The base was where he and Lin Yu first met. Wu Yi, Wen Kai, Li Hang—where are you all? Walking alone on this path felt lonely and sorrowful! Thoughts stirred in his mind, disrupting his peace. He told himself: I can't waste away like this; I need to get home quickly. If Lin Yu finds out I've gone out again, it won't be good.
Just then, thinking of Lin Yu made his earpiece vibrate. When he answered, he heard Lin Yu's voice sounding anxious...
Lin Yu had rushed to the nurse's house just before finishing work. The nurse lived alone in a two-story building. Usually, she wouldn’t come downstairs for fear of attracting the V2 zombie lurkers who were desperately searching for Vaccine Protein.
In the past visits to the nurse’s house, Lin Yu felt nothing particularly unusual or special. However, today felt different. When she reached out to ring the doorbell, surprisingly, the door opened automatically at her touch.
There was no sound inside as she stepped in. "Hi!" she called out—was it good or bad that no one responded? Eager to obtain ten units of Vaccine Protein, she didn’t think much and boldly stepped inside.
The situation inside was dire: messy piles of bedding and empty bottles scattered across the floor—it was a complete disaster. No one? Seeing that there was no one around, she hurried toward the special insulated box where the nurse usually kept the Vaccine Protein.
This was the first time Lin Yu had taken something from someone else's home, and she felt a wave of anxiety wash over her. Her outstretched hand trembled uncontrollably, as if afflicted by a case of the jitters. Finally, she grasped the handle of the thermos box and, steeling herself, yanked it open.
Inside the thermos box, there was nothing but emptiness. A sense of dread washed over Lin Yu, and she instinctively stepped back, her eyes darting to the corner of the room.
What she saw was something she wished she hadn't—a small nurse had been attacked by an unknown assailant. She lay curled on the floor, lifeless for some time.
As Lin Yu hurriedly retreated from the nurse's room, she felt her foot catch on something. Reacting instinctively, she bent down to pick it up and then bolted away without a second thought.
Once downstairs, she connected with Xiao Qiang while silently praying, Please pick up! Hurry! She jumped into the car and set it to autopilot, frantically driving away from the scene.
When the connection with Xiao Qiang was established, Lin Yu let out a sigh of relief but quickly asked, "Are you at home or outside?"
"At home." After answering, Xiao Qiang sped off. He wanted to get back home so that when she returned, she wouldn't know he had just been out.
Hearing that he was at home brought Lin Yu some comfort, but her voice trembled as she said, "The supply has been cut off."
Xiao Qiang paused for a moment, realizing that something must have gone terribly wrong for Lin Yu. He quickly reassured her, "It's okay; we still have sixty left at home."
"Go check on them; I need to know they're safe."
To ease Lin Yu's worries, Xiao Qiang knew there shouldn't be any issues, but he still went to check on the smart lockbox.
When he reached the charging station by the bedroom door, he was stunned. The smart lockbox was missing. Could Lin Yu have taken it? That seemed impossible; it needed to be charged to maintain its temperature.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yu asked as she turned a corner and pressed her finger against her earpiece.
"It's gone."
"What’s gone?"
"The smart lockbox containing the Vaccine Protein—it's missing." A wave of weakness washed over Xiao Qiang as he stumbled back a few steps and leaned against the wall, hearing Lin Yu's anguished cries through his earpiece.
What did losing the Vaccine Protein mean? It was terrifying; Xiao Qiang had injected himself with one before leaving. That meant they could control the outbreak of the V2 Zombie Virus for another week.
Lin Yu continued on the line, saying, "Luo Wei, connect with him quickly."
Xiao Qiang exclaimed in shock, "What’s going on?"
"Do you remember the story he told after the Nuclear War? He is that child, and he is also a carrier of the V2 Zombie Virus."
Hearing Lin Yu's words felt like a thunderbolt striking Xiao Qiang, leaving him dazed. It couldn't be true; just this afternoon, Luo Wei had invited him out for a game of pool. "Are you mistaken? They are your close friends!"
Through the earpiece, Lin Yu's voice came through, filled with sorrow, heavy breaths mixed with indistinct sobs. "The little nurse is dead. I found something—it's M's hairpin. She might have followed me here, then sneaked into the little nurse's home, killed her, and took the remaining Vaccine Protein. Qiang, quickly connect with Luo Wei and say something nice to him; just ask him to spare us a few."
How could this be possible? That seemingly sincere couple had conspired to deceive them? Xiao Qiang knew it was futile to plead, yet he still followed Lin Yu's instructions and connected with Luo Wei.
Thank goodness, he finally got through to Luo Wei.
Xiao Qiang suppressed his rage as best as he could and said, "Luo Wei, you should spare me some Vaccine Protein. What you're doing will get me killed. Really, for Lin Yu's sake, I beg you."
On the other end of the earpiece, Luo Wei sighed heavily, his tone filled with helplessness. "I'm sorry, brother. Staying alive is important for everyone. I've died once already; it was the Guerrilla Military that brought me back. At that time, I didn't even know I was harboring the V2 Zombie Virus. I have to live for my father and for M; she’s not well and needs my care..."
Before he could finish, the connection suddenly cut off as if M had forcibly ended Luo Wei's call.
