The Sun Tribe Sage stood frozen in place, staring blankly at the congealed blood inside the skull. This was the inevitable suffering on the path to immortality, yet no matter what, he could not swallow the foul-smelling liquid.
"What's wrong? Are you scared?" The monster approached the Sun Tribe Sage, its grotesque appearance truly terrifying. It extended its claw-like fingers and gripped the Sage's neck as if it were a chick, sharp nails piercing the skin and drawing forth crimson lines of blood.
Sensing the blood, the monster's excitement surged. It suddenly opened its mouth wide, revealing a lizard-like tongue that slithered out with a hissing sound. The tongue extended slowly, and the Sun Tribe Sage felt his legs weaken, nearly collapsing to his knees. He could feel the slick, cold tongue greedily probing at the wound made by the monster's claws, moving back and forth, its sticky saliva making every cell in his body shiver uncomfortably. The blood flowing from his neck was licked clean by the monster.
As he endured the monster's probing, the Sun Tribe Sage silently prayed: I swear to heaven that everything I do is for the glory of the Sun Tribe.
The monster retracted its tongue, its wrinkled face betraying no change in expression. It seemed to admire this human with evil thoughts before saying, "If you submit to me, you will receive my gifts." It then offered the liquid from inside the skull again. "Drink it, and you will see and hear things others cannot. When your power reaches its peak, you will traverse through the night to find your true path."
Listening to this tempting curse, the Sun Tribe Sage gritted his teeth, raised the foul blood to his lips, closed his eyes, tilted his head back, and gulped down the liquid from within the skull.
"Very good. Next, you will experience unparalleled pain. This is a necessary path for your evolution from human to immortality. However, once you drink it, you will develop an insatiable craving for Human Blood; then your desires will soon become reality."
The Sun Tribe Sage felt a strange force tearing through his bones, overwhelming him with pain that he could no longer endure. His vision blurred, and he collapsed to the ground.
Meanwhile, Xiao Qiang tossed and turned in bed, his mind filled not only with Lin Yu's image but also with memories of that bloody scene in the cave. Distracted and restless, he heard noises outside; it should be time for Vapsin's men to escort him to Taiyin Mountain.
He got up to straighten his wrinkled clothes and slung his only possession—the Time Machine Box—over his shoulder. A rhythmic knocking came from the wooden door as he hurriedly replied, "Coming!"
Two young and strong Sons of the Sun were there to escort Xiao Qiang, personally chosen by the Sun Tribe Sage himself. Stepping outside, he found it still dark as night; a cold wind blew gently past him with a hint of moisture that invigorated him. He squinted his eyes and asked tentatively, "Do I need to have my eyes covered?"
It was unclear whether the two men understood him; they exchanged glances but did not agree to Xiao Qiang's request. Instead, they produced prepared black cloths and stepped forward to blindfold him.
"I'll do it myself." Xiao Qiang took the black cloth and raised it high, but in that moment of being blindfolded, his gaze quickly swept towards the direction of Dragon Gate Mountain Forbidden Area. For some reason, a vague sense of unease settled in his heart, a feeling of restlessness. "The route we will take later..." It would be pointless to say anything; they wouldn't understand his language anyway.
Vapsin was still just a child. If Old Vap were still in charge, he wouldn't be treated so coldly. Perhaps Vapsin hadn't even told his father that the Saint who had once allied with them to destroy the False God’s lair had arrived. The truth was, times had changed.
To the left was the route into Snakehead Desert, while to the right led to Waji Mountain Tribe. They had brought Xiao Qiang from behind the altar of Sun Tribe. Along the way, the two of them whispered and glanced furtively at Xiao Qiang, who was blindfolded yet still managed to see the path clearly.
In a casual glance, one of them suddenly froze. He had seen light through the black cloth—light like that of pupils. It couldn't be! He whispered something to his companion and leaned closer to Xiao Qiang's face, gesturing in front of his eyes.
Xiao Qiang sensed that their actions were unusual and felt a sudden shock. Had he inadvertently revealed something by not concealing his energy? Under the cover of the black cloth, he closed his eyes, and they did not notice the fleeting light in his pupils. He suspected it was just an illusion and chose not to pursue it further.
After an unknown amount of time spent walking and stopping, they arrived at the mouth of a Gorge. The knife-edged peaks loomed like giants against the night sky. They settled Xiao Qiang down and gestured for him to wait there for a moment while they went off somewhere, but they never returned.
They had been gone for quite some time without showing up before Xiao Qiang. He pulled down the black cloth and revealed a pair of glimmering eyes that scanned the surrounding environment.
Here, apart from jagged rocks and the bare Knife-Cut Peaks, there was nothing else but the cold wind howling from the Gorge. Where were all the fierce beasts? Xiao Qiang stood up abruptly, his vision unobstructed as he surveyed the area.
He suddenly felt as if he had been exiled and driven away; Sun Tribe did not welcome him, especially that peculiar Sun Tribe Sage. From their first meeting, he could see an unusual demeanor in their eyes.
A strange sound echoed through the air—a long howl that seemed to come from some beast's throat—followed by countless pairs of glowing green eyes appearing in front of him like wolves from a futuristic world.
Xiao Qiang retreated cautiously, hiding behind a large rock as he saw several four-legged monsters bounding towards him from the left front. The creatures had upright ears like wolves and elongated snouts, their bodies covered in spots resembling those of pet dogs. However, they were not pet dogs; they were Giant Hyenas, a type of carnivorous animal that evolved during the Cenozoic era.
Long ago, Giant Hyenas primarily lived in Eurasia and North Africa during the late Miocene to early Pleistocene epochs. Although they resembled dogs in appearance, they did not belong to the canine family and were not true dogs; instead, they had certain relations with feliforms.
The Giant Hyena has an incredibly keen sense of smell. It detected Xiao Qiang's presence from a hundred meters away, letting out a howl to alert its companions about the sudden appearance of prey.
Dealing with a single towering Giant Hyena would be manageable for Xiao Qiang, but facing three of them attacking from different directions would pose a significant challenge.
The teeth of the Giant Hyena are comparable to those of a werewolf, and these are primitive creatures that have not undergone training or evolutionary refinement. The tender flesh of Xiao Qiang is exactly what they have longed for as their meal.
During the day, the Giant Hyenas dare not appear within the sight of the Sun Tribe hunters, especially after crossing Taiyin Mountain, where traps set by hunters are everywhere. Thus, they typically operate in groups at night.
With humans taking preventive measures, these carnivorous beasts can only survive through the law of the jungle. Large carnivores prey on smaller ones, while smaller carnivores hunt domesticated livestock that humans are still in the process of taming. Sometimes, when hungry, they even dig into the Stratum to eat parasites from grass roots.
Xiao Qiang spotted a wide area behind some rocks that seemed to have a spring pit. A white mist resembling steam was rising from it; it was clear that this Spring Pit was a hot spring in this future world.
Yes! He could only hide in the hot spring so that the Giant Hyena wouldn't catch his scent. With this thought in mind, Xiao Qiang dashed a few steps forward. He knew that as soon as the Giant Hyenas saw his figure moving, they would swarm towards him, but he had no time to look back and quickly submerged himself in the Spring Pit.
