Desperate arguments proved futile as Xiao Qiang spotted the Sun Tribe Sage among the crowd. The sage's cunning demeanor and cold, sinister smile fixated on him.
"I want to see your leader!" Xiao Qiang shouted, only to have a foul-smelling cloth stuffed into his mouth by the sage. Four burly Sons of the Sun hoisted him onto their shoulders, marching down the mountain in a grand procession. The pitiful hyena managed to escape, but it did not stray far, quietly and cautiously trailing behind.
Xiao Qiang was no longer a Saint; he was a notorious Bloodsucker.
Long ago, there had been sightings of Bloodsuckers in the Waji Mountain Tribe, which explained why they meticulously checked him for signs of being one upon their first encounter.
Vapsin appeared, but under the sage's sly influence, he kept his distance from Xiao Qiang. He called over one of the bolder Sons of the Sun to pry open the Bloodsucker's mouth and check how many fangs he had.
The elders of the Sun Tribe said that if a Bloodsucker had four fangs fully grown, he had already turned into a demon and must be burned to be eliminated.
The sage, feeling guilty, would never allow anyone to approach Xiao Qiang for such an inspection. As soon as he appeared, he immediately stopped the eager man from getting closer to check for fangs.
Vapsin believed that even if they were to punish Xiao Qiang, there needed to be convincing reasons and evidence. How could they take a life based solely on hearsay?
This was Old Vap's warning to his son when he was sober; he could not go against his father's wishes. Thus, the sage had no choice but to compromise and remove the rag still stuffed in Xiao Qiang's mouth. He also ordered the collection of livestock that had been drained of blood, many of which were horses traded for slaves from the bustling Silk Road.
The horses had all been bitten on the neck by the Bloodsucker until they bled to death.
As the rag was pulled away, Xiao Qiang had something to say: he knew that the unwilling hyena was still lurking in the shadows, too intimidated by the crowd to approach.
He deliberately raised his voice to question the sage, "Did you see me suck blood?"
In a rush to execute Xiao Qiang before dawn and silence him forever, the sage's temper flared. He nearly jumped up in anger, shrieking hoarsely, "Who else could it be? You are a monster that survives by sucking blood; otherwise, how could you remain eternally youthful?"
"What nonsense! Who am I? As a Saint, I naturally possess this ability to live forever."
"Let me see if you are truly a Saint." The sage retorted sharply, his hawk-like gaze darting toward Xiao Qiang as he drew a newly forged double-edged weapon from one of the Sons of the Sun and approached him menacingly.
Xiao Qiang struggled and shouted, "What do you want to do?"
"I want to test your abilities." As he spoke, the Sage smiled coldly and raised his weapon, stabbing fiercely at Xiao Qiang's shoulder blade.
"Ugh!" Xiao Qiang let out a low cry of pain, cold sweat pouring from his forehead as the agony spread through him. He glared at the Sage, enduring the intense pain, and managed a bitter smile at Vapsin, warning loudly, "Leader, you need to be careful of those around you. He is not to be trusted..."
"What do you mean?" Vapsin misunderstood Xiao Qiang's words as an attempt to sow discord between him and the Sage. Naturally, he did not believe this outsider's claims. "You are heartless, a vile Bloodsucker. You have long deceived my father and the Waji Mountain Tribe, claiming to be a Saint. We will summon the Fire God to punish you."
"Don't be impulsive. Leader, if you just check the Sage's arm, you'll know the truth. Besides, I just returned from Taiyin Valley; how could I possibly be a Bloodsucker?"
The Sage grew anxious at the side, unable to understand Xiao Qiang's conversation with the leader. Malicious thoughts began to form in his mind. He waved his hand and said, "This creature will vanish at dawn; we must punish him quickly."
Xiao Qiang knew this was a desperate move by the Sage. He urged Vapsin in a low voice, "Leader, my death is inconsequential, but your Sun Tribe will face extinction."
Vapsin hesitated as images of the imposing and wise Saint filled his mind. He noticed someone bringing firewood while the Sage directed them to ignite it in an attempt to burn Xiao Qiang alive. He quickly shouted, "Wait!"
The Sage was startled by the leader's command but maintained an air of wisdom. "My king, time waits for no one..."
Vapsin scrutinized the Sage step by step, his gaze shifting to his arm. The Sage's arm appeared to be wrapped in cloth; such bindings typically occurred when a prey was injured during Surrounding Capture. In recent days, due to the Saint's influence and the Sage's self-imposed isolation for hunting reasons, the tribe had been busy with farming at home. So how did the Sage get injured?
Seeing that Vapsin was suspicious of his arm but showing no signs of panic, the Sage calmly explained, "I was scratched by this Bloodsucker during our fight just now."
What a perfect lie—reasonable and convincing. Vapsin not only refrained from further questioning the Sage's injury but also offered him words of comfort and praise.
Xiao Qiang felt despair for these ignorant humans. He looked up at the dark gray sky and sighed, shaking his head. "I never expected it would be so hard to be a good person; after surviving near-death experiences, I still face death."
The firewood beneath him blazed fiercely as the cunning Sun Tribe Sage sneered triumphantly. His greedy eyes glimmered with malice as they fixated on Xiao Qiang.
How could he become a vengeful spirit? Even after being given every chance possible, these ignorant fools continued their absurd execution of their so-called demon-slaying plan. With a powerful tug and a sharp crackle, Xiao Qiang broke free from his bindings as they snapped apart like thin threads.
Bloodsucker broke free, and this situation was serious. It frightened the elderly, women, and children, causing them to retreat hastily. The men holding poles surrounded Xiao Qiang under the guidance of the wise leader.
Vapsin was momentarily flustered, but with the wise leader directing the situation, he could relax and observe from the sidelines.
The hyena hiding in the shadows saw its master in danger and leaped in, barking wildly without a care. Its bared teeth startled several people.
Some speculated that this Giant Hyena was known for eating humans; how could it possibly be there to protect him?
A faint buzzing sound reached Xiao Qiang's ears, coming from above. In the standoff with the Sun Tribe, he had no time to consider who the Visitor was.
Chaos erupted on-site as the hyena joined in attacking its master. Many were bitten by the hyena, yet under the threats and temptations from the Sun Tribe Sage, no one dared to make excuses to leave. Despite multiple attempts to surround him, they couldn't get close to Xiao Qiang.
At that moment, a green arc of light shot down from the sky, causing the Sun Tribe surrounding Xiao Qiang to scream in fright, thinking it was Bloodsucker's reinforcements arriving, and they scattered in panic.
What was going on? Xiao Qiang looked up in confusion and saw a conceptual aircraft from a future world. Instead of descending immediately, it lowered a soft ladder, signaling for Xiao Qiang to climb up.
Without hesitation, he grabbed the ladder and hugged the hyena as he ascended.
