The world capital of the nation was not far away, a place teeming with a mix of people from various skin colors, nationalities, and languages. To Matt, it resembled the legendary concession areas of Hong Kong and Macau, where such a diverse array of cultures collided and fused in these cramped spaces, an unprecedented sight. 0

After the Mass Extermination, the remaining humans were still haunted by memories of the past and mostly stayed indoors. Thus, the streets were predominantly filled with members of the Mass Extermination team, clad in uniforms and carrying firefighting equipment. 0

Ordinary citizens rarely strolled about; occasionally, one might see someone rushing to buy daily necessities. Those who ventured into the streets moved quickly, intent on finishing their business without lingering. The bars were also deserted, with few patrons to be found. 0

Of course, there were many clever vendors taking advantage of the situation, selling everyday items at exorbitant prices—often several times higher than market rates. While they reduced the hassle of shopping, they also posed a certain level of danger. 0

In many areas, vacant houses were abundant; some buildings housed only a few families. This situation provided opportunities for some ill-intentioned rioters to exploit. 0

Due to the mixed population, the crime rate in this region was higher than in others. As a result, patrols and undercover officers were a common sight on the streets. 0

“Please show your certificate.” 0

A stern voice startled Wu Yi, causing him to tremble slightly and spill some of his drink. Two foreign men in uniforms had their hands resting on their weapons as they scrutinized them from above. 0

In response to the foreign detectives' inquiry, Matt leisurely took a sip of his drink. He raised his eyes to assess them, noting their brown skin and dark brown eyes, silently speculating that they likely belonged to the Australian race. 0

“They want to check our documents,” Matt said to Wu Yi. 0

Wu Yi slowly stood up and extended two fingers to hand over his identification. As he did so, he unconsciously glanced at his neatly trimmed nails, realizing that after cutting them just seconds ago, they wouldn’t grow back so quickly. While the officers examined his documents, he nervously rubbed his hands together and looked at Matt, secretly relieved that he had just clipped his nails. 0

Matt refused to show his identification. The two foreign detectives perceived this as suspicious behavior. Drawing their weapons, their tone turned more aggressive as they repeated, “Please show your certificate.” 0

Wu Yi didn’t understand why Matt refused to present his ID; he sat stiffly in his seat. Unable to comprehend their foreign language but sensing that they were not easy to deal with. 0

“Just show them,” Wu Yi urged. 0

“Hell no. I’m a citizen; why should I show these foreigners my ID?” 0

Two foreign detectives exchanged glances, and one of them asked in broken Mandarin, "What are you doing here?" 0

Matt smiled calmly and nodded, saying, "That's right. On our country's soil, we must speak our language; otherwise, we can't communicate." As he spoke, he pulled out his identification from his pocket and handed it to the two foreign detectives. 0

One of the detectives quickly glanced at the ID and looked back at Matt with an incredulous expression. "Mr. Matt, you were a scientist?" 0

"Please!" Matt replied seriously, his tone firm. "I ask you to speak Mandarin." 0

"Okay, okay, it's great to meet you," one of them said with a relieved smile, nodding repeatedly. The other detective stepped aside slightly as if connecting with headquarters and reported in English, "We got him." 0

Matt and Wu Yi were driven by the two foreign detectives to the front of a Western-style building. A sign at the entrance read, "Pearl of the Oriental Alliance of Biology." 0

Matt wondered aloud, "Strange. Why have they brought us to the Biological Alliance Association?" 0

Wu Yi shrugged. "No idea. If we refuse, what do you think will happen?" 0

"There's no smoke without fire. Stay calm and keep observing. Perhaps someone knows about our existence and has made us their target." 0

"Could it be aimed at me?" 0

Matt smirked slightly but then frowned. "If you were the target of a purge, you would have been done for just now." 0

Wu Yi shook his head helplessly. "Hiding everywhere is exhausting. Let's see what they plan to do with us!" 0

The two foreign detectives escorted them to the entrance and handed them over to a staff member who emerged from the building wearing a color-changing uniform. This staff member warmly welcomed Matt and Wu Yi. 0

He presented an introduction letter from the International Alliance Talent Agency, stating that someone had recommended both of them for work here several months ago. Who could it be? Matt speculated privately, feeling that everything happening was too incredible. 0

This place was certainly not open to just anyone; outside was heavily guarded, with armed elite personnel patrolling back and forth. Upon entering the building's premises, they had to undergo strict infrared smart scanning and pupil verification. 0

The simple and tidy architectural structure featured sleek, three-dimensional walls. The staff member leading them extended a hand to verify their fingerprints at the entrance hall, and only after receiving a simulated female voice command did the door automatically open. 0

Wu Yi looked around anxiously, while Matt walked forward steadily, ignoring the imposing guards standing in prominent positions, each face seemingly carrying a sharp and restrained aura of intimidation. 0

After several verifications, under Wu Yi's observation, it was clear that there were simply too many rooms, too large in size; in the corridor, they could hardly see anyone else. The tranquil atmosphere felt empty and cold, with their soft footsteps accentuating the solemnity and potential mystery of the place. 0

Under the guidance of the staff member, they entered a room resembling a screening room. It was called such because one wall displayed a large, bright screen. 0

The screen showcased images of the atmosphere and the entire universe, along with various three-dimensional star systems. Then a phrase appeared: What is the universe made of? 0

Seated closely together as arranged by the staff member, Wu Yi immediately responded to the question without hesitation, "What's so difficult about that? The universe is made up of those shiny stars." 0

Matt chuckled softly and lowered his voice, saying, "Don't embarrass yourself. It's actually composed of stars, planets, and star systems. Of course, there's also our matter—ordinary matter—which accounts for less than 5% of the total mass of the universe. I estimate that another 25% might be dark matter made up of undiscovered particles." 0

"What about the remaining 70%?" Wu Yi asked. 0

"That could be dark energy—it's what causes the universe to expand at an accelerating rate." 0

Someone approached them, and Matt shushed Wu Yi with a raised finger to stop him from continuing on such a trivial topic. 0
