The visitor was Yang Gang. He held a bunch of colorful wildflowers in his hands, and his sun-kissed face was adorned with beads of sweat and a bright smile. "Hi, hello."
I was taken aback. "You..."
"Don't get me wrong, flowers for a beautiful lady, please accept them." Despite his appearance, he seemed quite humorous and had an understanding of romance. However, I wasn't fond of older men; their maturity and charm could be the most dangerous.
Although I liked the bouquet of natural beauty he held, I couldn't accept it casually. At least not before figuring out his intentions. I politely declined, saying, "I'm sorry, I'm allergic to flowers."
"What a buzzkill..." He should have left then, but instead, he stood there frozen for a moment, staring foolishly at the flowers in his hand. Finally, he decisively looked up at me and asked, "Can I come in for a glass of water?"
"NO, don't joke around. I'm the only one home right now; I'm sorry." I tried to close the door. To my surprise, he forced himself into the doorway, using his other hand to prevent me from shutting it.
Seeing his domineering behavior made my heart skip a beat as I nervously asked, "What do you want?" My hand couldn't hold back the door that had already been pushed open. He didn't respond but forcefully pushed the door again and successfully entered the room.
I was panicking! This was a serious breach of etiquette. Yilan Shan's words felt like a heavy spell weighing on my heart.
"Don't do this; she'll get angry."
"What are you afraid of? I saw them leave before I came."
What on earth did this guy want? How could he be secretly monitoring others' movements? I shot him an annoyed glance. "The owner isn't home; you should show some restraint..."
"Don't worry; I'm here specifically to visit Yilan Shan's new housekeeper." Yang Gang stepped inside and began looking around as if searching for something. Suddenly stopping in his tracks, he continued in a meaningful tone, "You still haven't told me your name."
"Why should I tell you?" Frustration bubbled within me; this guy was not only thick-skinned but also shameless. He was Yilan Shan's neighbor, and an idea suddenly leaped into my mind: "Do you know her?"
Yang Gang glanced at the photo in my hand with an indifferent expression and shook his head. "Nope." His gaze quickly shifted from the photo to the room's decor.
"Oh." Disappointed, I put the photo back in my pocket. "You're not just here to admire her home's decor, are you?"
"Nope, just wanted to get to know you a little."
"Alright! Then please go to the balcony," she said, feeling awkward in the large house with a man she didn't know, especially one who looked like an older gentleman. She thought it would be best to send him away before her friends returned, but how could she do that?
Yang Gang had already walked out onto the balcony. Reluctantly, she followed him. The balcony was spacious, furnished with two beach chairs and bathed in good light. From there, they could overlook the scenery outside and see any movement at the entrance.
"Do you like Shakespeare's works?"
"..." He was quite observant, remembering the book in her hands from their brief encounter. Whether he was feigning ignorance or genuinely trying to change the subject quickly, she wasn't in the mood to entertain him. "How do you know that?"
"I guessed." Yang Gang ignored her displeasure and continued smiling. "Why don't you ask what I do for a living?"
"Is it necessary?"
"It is."
"Then what do you do?"
"I'm a butcher..." The word seemed to squeeze out from between his teeth. What did that mean? Was he planning something sinister while the owner was away?
Her mind raced with thoughts as she nervously swallowed hard. The tension made her throat dry and her voice wavered. "What do you want?"
"Are you scared?" Yang Gang tilted his head back and laughed heartily before sobering up and looking at her seriously. "Don't worry; I only kill pigs, not people."
"Then... why are you here?"
"I'm curious about you; you're different from other girls in big cities."
"In what way?"
"Your simplicity and natural beauty—no need for pretentious decorations." What right did a butcher have to discuss such things? She felt increasingly irritated, her expression darkening further.
"Tell me your name, and I'll leave right away."
I was stunned; this person truly was an arrogant fool, overestimating himself. "Why should I tell you?" I replied, filled with hostility. There was no way I would reveal my name to him. However, he was quite talkative, and no matter how I reacted, he maintained his cheerful demeanor. I had to admit, there was something about him that made me feel a bit fond of him.
Yang Gang was a socialite, rambling on about everything under the sun, which gradually eased my tension. His smile exuded an irresistible charm that made me want to continue the conversation.
I had mentioned that Yilan Shan walked without making a sound, but her sudden appearance startled both me and Yang Gang.
Especially when she saw us chatting animatedly; her expression turned sour. She glared at Yang Gang and demanded, "How did you get in here?" Without waiting for his response, she turned her ire towards me, scolding, "I've told you many times; why can't you remember?"
"He... I..." In my flustered state, I didn't know how to explain clearly. That scoundrel Yang Gang was causing me trouble.
"I'm sorry, I have to go," Yang Gang said with the same gentlemanly demeanor, completely unfazed by Yilan Shan's anger. He stood up just as I was about to open the door for him.
"I'll see him out," Yilan Shan said coldly, leaving me with no choice but to comply.
After Yilan Shan escorted Yang Gang out, she quickly returned to face me.
Mute Aunt was busy preparing lunch.
She called for me to come to the living room for a talk.
Once in the living room, I sat up straight, unable to meet her gaze.
"Aren't you curious about Gu Xiaofang?" Yilan Shan initiated the conversation about Gu Xiaofang, which caught me off guard.
"Yes."
"Do you know who the man she is infatuated with is?"
How should I answer this idiotic question? What does Yilan Shan want to convey? Could it be related to Yang Gang? Naturally, I shook my head; how could I lie and say I knew?
"That's the man I was just chatting with, Yang Gang!!!"
"Huh?" Yang Gang and Gu Xiaofang? "How is that possible? He just said he didn't know Xiaofang." Hearing Yilan Shan say this, my impression of Yang Gang took a nosedive.
"That's the cunning nature of men. He sees you’re beautiful and wants to use the same old tricks to win your heart."
I couldn't help but laugh at Yilan Shan's worries, eager to express my feelings. "I don't like older men, Yi Jie, you're overthinking it."
"Hmph! Don't let your guard down." Yilan Shan's gaze softened, and she finally said earnestly, "Ever since Gu Xiaofang met Yang Gang, she's become gloomy. She goes looking for him all the time, and no one can persuade her otherwise. Sigh!"
"When did she leave?"
"That night, she didn't come home. When I woke up, there was a note in her bedroom saying she needed some time away to calm down. It didn't say much else."
"Do her family know?"
"I'm not sure." Yilan Shan nodded and added as a final warning, "In any case, staying away from that man is for your own safety."
