"What are you doing?" a loud shout startled me, making me shiver. I looked up to see Yang Gang rushing over. At this moment, if he didn't run, he must be a fool. Seeing him hurrying towards me, I quickly dodged his path and slipped away from the side. Unfortunately, I had just lifted a corner of something and hadn't had the chance to see what it was inside, but there was indeed a strange smell.
With mud on my shoes and looking all flustered, how could I not raise Yilan Shan's suspicions? As soon as I reached the door, she successfully blocked my way and questioned sharply, "Were you meeting Yang Gang in secret?"
What a joke! Although I was her family's maid, it wasn't as if my personal freedom should be stripped away completely. The idea of secretly meeting Yang Gang was absurd, but to stand my ground, I argued confidently, "So what if I did? I only went after finishing my work."
"You... you'll regret this," Yilan Shan said, her face turning as purple as an eggplant, gritting her teeth.
I raised my chin defiantly and thought to myself: If you have the guts, fire me. Only the family could fire me; that way, I could collect the wages I had worked hard for over the past half month. If I left voluntarily, it would mean giving up automatically. No matter what, I couldn't leave if I wanted to get paid.
Just as my relationship with Yilan Shan reached a boiling point, Zhu Zhu got into trouble.
That bastard Ye Liu Yun, after failing to coerce Zhu Zhu, turned to darker intentions. Perhaps unintentionally, he choked Zhu Zhu when she refused to reveal my actual working address, causing her capillaries to burst and leading to her suffocation and death on the spot.
Seeing that he had caused trouble for himself and unwilling to report it to the police, he searched for clues in Zhu Zhu's bedroom and eventually found the agency's phone number on the refrigerator.
The Agency maintained confidentiality for the sake of both parties involved in employment. However, Ye Liu Yun had his tricks; he told the Agency's clerk, "My sister is working; our elderly father is dying and needs to see her one last time."
The clerk was taken aback; this was serious business. The greatest matters in life revolve around life and death, so she had to make an exception to help. Unfortunately, this brainless clerk didn't think it through carefully before agreeing to help him find his sister. She asked, "What is your sister's name?"
"Ding Li."
The clerk meticulously searched through my records and finally found them to hand over to Ye Liu Yun. He revealed his true colors with a sinister grin and said coldly to the clerk, "No thanks," before turning to leave.
"Hey! You should leave some proof..." The clerk shouted in vain as he had already walked far away.
I sat upright on the sofa, feeling the drastic change in Yilan Shan's attitude towards me. When her tough approach failed, she softened her tone. "Good girl, I'm doing this for your own good. Gu Xiaofang's whereabouts are still unknown; it’s possible he was harmed by him."
What could I do in response? "Yijie, I just went to see Yang Gang, but it wasn't a secret meeting; I just wanted to check on him."
Surprisingly, Yilan Shan didn't press me further about what I had gone to see. Instead, she seemed to have an epiphany and said, "Oh? Silly girl. As long as you're fine, go rest! Right now, I still need to pray for you with Aunt Mute."
I nodded in agreement. "Alright, you all carry on. I'll take a break."
In truth, hiding the fact that I saw Yang Gang bury something from Yilan Shan showed my lack of trust in her. Gu Xiaofang—that young man felt like an invisible curse; they had cursed this house, and it seemed they were struggling desperately to seek revenge!
Meanwhile, Yilan Shan and her Mute Aunt were ostensibly chanting prayers to the Demon God, but it felt more like they were seeking peace of mind. My parents taught me from a young age not to trust people easily when out in the world; one should only trust their own judgment.
In the bedroom, I was alone, lazily lying on the bed. My mind raced through all the details of events since I started working here.
Instinctively, I needed to figure out who that young man was first before concerning myself with Gu Xiaofang. The relationship between Yang Gang and Gu Xiaofang was one where he thought only of others, unaware that danger was creeping closer to me.
"Ding Li~ Ding Li~ Ding Li~" The eerie calls seeped through the crack of the door again. Covering my ears did no good; that voice repeatedly assaulted my eardrums. Before I knew it, against my will, I slowly rose and moved mechanically toward the sound.
At that moment, I felt as if I had been ensnared by an inescapable spell, like a puppet under the influence of some seductive force. Step by step, I left my bedroom and walked toward that room filled with a terrifying aura—the one I had seen in my hallucinations.
The locked door fell open on its own with a creak. I desperately told myself not to go in, but my legs felt as if they were bound by some magical force.
Entering that room was just as lifeless as before. Under the laser spotlight, a shadowy figure moved closer under my terrified gaze.
A ghost!!! My heart leaped into my throat. A chill enveloped me from all sides; my mind went blank, my throat dry and unable to scream; my wide eyes felt like they would burst from their sockets! A tear rolled down my cheek as I thought, "Please... don’t kill me."
A cold, icy hand rested on my shoulder, and a chilling breath whispered, "Help us... take revenge..."
I gasped for air, my head feeling too heavy to support itself, nodding uncontrollably. When her hand touched my shoulder, I shivered all over, suddenly sensing an uncontrollable wave of fear.
In my mind's eye, a frail boy was struggling for breath, his face covered by a plastic sheet. Yilan Shan and her aunt held him down—one gripping his head and the other his legs. No matter how hard he fought, he couldn't escape their cruel and inhumane grasp.
Tears streamed down my face as I felt powerless to speak, allowing Gu Xiaofang's vengeful spirit to force-feed me the suffering they had endured.
Yilan Shan had ruthlessly punished her sickly younger brother, stripping him of his right to live. This horrifying scene was witnessed by Gu Xiaofang when she returned from outside.
Gu Xiaofang attempted to call the police but was brutally murdered by Yilan Shan and her aunt.
At that moment, my Mute Aunt, who had been stalking me, suddenly burst into their confined space. My restraints instantly fell away as I saw the fierce expression on Mute Aunt's face, and I stumbled out in terror.
However... I never expected that Yilan Shan would be waiting for me with a sharp knife in hand. She glared at me with predatory eyes and sneered, "Heaven has a path you refuse to take; hell has no door yet you come barging in. Ding Li, don't blame my heartlessness; just do your own thing. Why meddle in others' affairs?"
I panted heavily, scanning the room for something to defend myself with.
