When Shasha arrived at the restrained Felicia's cell, it was already empty.
It turned out that if a master thief wanted to escape, no one could keep her confined, especially if they were willing to let her go.
This departure indicated that Felicia had come to a realization, or perhaps she had found a higher calling.
Shasha was unaware of what Lao Xiao and Felicia had discussed, but for now, there was no need to investigate further. Moreover, he seemed to have an inkling of the identity of the person behind it all.
If anyone was truly inscrutable, it would be Lao Xiao; there was no one who could match him.
Upon leaving the prison, the truck he had deliberately damaged was still under repair. It no longer carried prisoners but rather those corrupt guards who colluded with the Warden. It was evident that those in power never cared about the process; they only desired results.
As long as the supplies kept flowing, did it really matter who provided them?
Taking one last look at the prison, the unwillingness in Lao Xiao's eyes lingered in Shasha's mind. She knew that if she continued to pursue this matter, Lao Xiao would be the real breakthrough point. For now, she would set it aside; after all, her objective had already been achieved.
With a flick of her cloak, Shasha vanished into the night; there were many more tasks awaiting her.
In Florida, in the Swampland Park Area, late at night.
A tall figure that resembled nothing human flickered in and out of the darkness. It raced forward, plunging into the sewers while observing its reflection in the murky water below.
A lizard-like face with green skin twisted into a grotesque snarl from rage. It clawed fiercely at everything in sight within the gutter, yet it proved to be futile.
“Damn it! Why is it that everything I do has no problems yet leads me to become like this!?”
Roaring in frustration, he suddenly froze. “Of course! It's because they refused to support my experiments that resulted in this half-finished product! They deserve to pay!”
As if finding a release for his pent-up anger, he directed all his hatred toward this reason.
After a while, the president of a local pharmaceutical company in Miami, Florida, was found dead in his home. Shortly after, none of the board members were spared; all the survivors of the attack insisted they had seen a giant lizard!
Upon returning to New York, Shasha seemed to have resumed her previous life, living alone. Felicia had not contacted her and seemed to be hiding somewhere again, while Li Qianhuan, who lived next door, also appeared to have gone on a trip and had not shown up recently.
Feeling that something was missing at home, Shasha suddenly wanted to get a pet, even if it couldn't talk.
Although her time at Marvel had been fulfilling, exciting, and full of anticipation, humans are social creatures; without companionship, one's personality can become increasingly reclusive.
Coincidentally, today was a day off. Shasha searched online for several pet stores and decided on one with good reviews before stepping out of her apartment and hailing a taxi.
After about ten minutes, she arrived at a pet store called Enchanting Star. As she pushed the door open, various animal sounds greeted her ears, predominantly the barks and meows of dogs and cats.
"Hello, sir! What kind of pet are you looking for?"
The shop owner approached with a gentle smile; naturally, good business put him in a good mood.
Shasha thought for a moment and decided that getting a dog would be best since cats could be more difficult to care for.
"I'd like to adopt a dog. Could you recommend some breeds available here?"
Upon hearing this, the owner's smile flickered with a hint of doubt. Typically, such inquiries came from those who didn't mind spending money, but those types often didn't cherish their pets as much. He replied, "There are hundreds of dog breeds. Choosing one should depend on your actual situation because we have responsibilities not only to you but also to the dogs."
Shasha nodded in agreement with the owner's perspective. He continued, "Choosing a dog is about having an affinity. Many customers come in already knowing which breeds they like and compare them before making their final choice. So if you want to select one, it's best to start with the breeds you prefer."
Shasha was taken aback; she hadn't realized there were so many considerations when buying a dog. For the first time, she felt her experience was somewhat lacking.
Following the owner’s lead, she turned her gaze toward the puppies in their cages. There were many familiar breeds from her past life on display—truly a dazzling array. However, unfortunately, none caught her eye; even though they were adorable, she felt something was still missing.
Just as Shasha was feeling disappointed, a flash of white caught his eye. He looked down to see a white puppy of an unknown breed. Its paws were sturdy, giving off a faint hint of being a hound, yet it was not quite clear.
Crouching down to observe it closely, he noticed its ears were slightly perked up, and its white fur had a soft sheen. However, the dullness in its eyes made it appear somewhat sickly.
"What breed is this dog?" Shasha asked, pointing at it.
The shopkeeper glanced over and couldn't help but feel awkward. "This one looks a bit like a white German Shepherd. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend you choose it. It's been in the store for quite a while, and many people have inquired about its price, but they all backed out because it doesn't look healthy."
Although Shasha didn't know much about dogs, he could tell just by looking at the color of its fur that it was healthy; there was no sign of illness. The real reason it hadn't been bought was likely due to its current appearance.
With an observational skill sharper than most, Shasha had a strange feeling that this puppy, only three or four months old, seemed to possess a touch of humanity.
After a moment of contemplation, Shasha stood up and pointed at the puppy, saying to the shopkeeper, "I'll buy it."
