Outside the Samar Industrial office building, two unfamiliar guests arrived.
One was a well-groomed man dressed appropriately, who, if donned in a lab coat, would look like a researcher. The other was bald and robust, resembling more of a driver than a doctor.
These two were Reed Richards and Ben Grimm, longtime friends of Susan.
"Hey, Reed, you really owe Susan a big thank you this time. If it weren't for her, your plans might never have gotten off the ground. You know those guys think you're just spinning fairy tales," Ben remarked.
Hearing his friend's words, Reed sighed, "I never expected it would be her who came through for me in the end."
"After all, you two once..." Ben's voice trailed off meaningfully.
This brought back memories for Reed, but after a moment of reflection, he shook his head. "That's in the past. You know her well enough; the reason she helped me this time is probably because she wants us to be even."
Ben opened his mouth to say something but ended up sighing instead.
Surprisingly, it was Reed who patted his friend's shoulder and smiled. "Alright, let's go meet our investor. While Susan's advice might have played a role, the final decision still rests with him."
"Maybe he's a madman or just in it for the girls," Ben muttered under his breath.
"What was that?" Reed pretended not to hear clearly but couldn't help wondering if the investor agreed to meet Susan just to impress her. After all, as her ex-boyfriend, he knew how remarkable she was.
With mixed feelings, the two entered the office building.
As they reached the elevator, they spotted Susan waiting outside, seemingly for quite some time.
Old friends met in silence until Ben broke the ice first. "Hey, Susan, long time no see."
"Ben, it seems you've put on quite a bit of weight again," Susan teased with a smile.
Reed rubbed his nose awkwardly and replied with some complexity in his tone, "How have you been, Susan?"
When her gaze shifted to Reed, a fleeting look of nostalgia crossed Susan's eyes before it transformed into acceptance. "Thank you, I'm doing well. After all, I don't have to worry about anything else now."
Perhaps only Reed could understand the meaning behind Susan's words. During their university days, they were known as a golden couple, always together, working on research projects side by side, driven by their shared dream.
However, things often unfold in unexpected ways. While pursuing their dreams, they forgot about the bread and butter of life, leading them to face a very real dilemma: should they continue their research or focus on making a living?
Susan decided to take a job to cover their expenses, but Reed, who was deeply committed to their dream, saw Susan's choice as a betrayal. Gradually, arguments began to arise between them, ultimately causing this golden couple to part ways.
It was a cliché storyline, yet it resonated with reality.
Though unaware of the specifics of their past, I wisely chose not to interfere.
The three of them entered the elevator in silence, exchanging glances until they reached the top floor. It was then that Susan slowly spoke up, “This is your only chance. Do your best to impress him. Mr. Samar is easy to talk to but not easily fooled. Although the project has been approved, you will need to fight for the initial investment.”
As they shifted to the main topic, both men nodded repeatedly, taking deep breaths to steady themselves.
Upon exiting the elevator, Susan pushed open the conference room door. The three filed in and were greeted by Shasha seated at the head of the table, with another assistant, Wanda Maximoff, beside her.
“Good afternoon, gentlemen. I apologize for interrupting your lunch, but I urgently need to understand the prospects of this project,” Shasha stated.
Shasha remembered that these four had gained superpowers after being exposed to Cosmic Rays in space. However, their proposal utilizing Cosmic Rays had ended in failure, resulting in significant losses. Although he was wealthy, he wasn't willing to let money go to waste; after all, every penny was hard-earned.
Reed gestured toward Shasha and handed him a stack of documents. He pulled out one sheet and placed it before Shasha as he began his pitch. “Mr. Samar, we have spent nearly ten years researching an unknown type of radiation from outer space. I’ll refer to it as Cosmic Rays. These Cosmic Rays carry intense energy from space and have numerous applications; for instance, they can be converted into electrical energy, replace oil, or even become nuclear energy. Furthermore, we discovered that a small amount of this radiation applied to the human body can alter one’s constitution, making them resistant to illness and physically robust.”
At this point, Shasha raised his hand to interrupt him. “Alright, Mr. Reed, I think I understand the prospects. However, I need to know how you plan to collect these Cosmic Rays? Also, if any unexpected incidents occur during the process, do you have contingency measures in place? After all, we cannot predict everything; we must be fully prepared.”
Hearing Shasha's response made Reed somewhat dismissive. “Mr. Samar, I believe safety concerns are completely unnecessary.”
“Can you guarantee that the mission will be absolutely safe?” Shasha asked seriously while internally criticizing Reed for his lack of rigor regarding such a dangerous project.
Reed found himself at a loss for words under Shasha's questioning; he indeed could not provide such guarantees. Was he supposed to assure that after ten years of planning there would be no possibility of unforeseen circumstances?
Indeed, as Shasha pointed out, no one could guarantee such things.
At that moment, Susan couldn't help but interject, "The project already includes measures to address various dangers. If your side neglects this, we have the right to withdraw from the project."
What else could Reed do? He could only nod in agreement; he didn't want to waste money unnecessarily.
It was precisely because he understood his friend's character so well that he chose not to speak up, even though he internally agreed with Reed.
After the two left, Wanda Maximoff, who had been silent until then, frowned and said, "I feel like this project is being rushed. I looked into their background before, and many well-known companies do not support their approach."
Just then, Susan returned after seeing Reed off and overheard Wanda's comment. She replied nonchalantly, "Not supporting them doesn't mean denying their talent. Although this plan does seem a bit far-fetched."
"Are you defending him because he was once your friend?" Wanda Maximoff bit down hard on the word "friend," actually mocking Susan for her past affection.
