At the restaurant that Shasha often frequented, he waited for Elizabeth, who was still tied up with work.
Bored, he glanced around the establishment he had never really paid attention to before, only now realizing how he had overlooked its exquisite decor.
The golden railings blended Chinese and European architectural styles, exuding both grandeur and elegance.
Occasionally pausing to appreciate the scenery he had previously ignored felt refreshing, even though he was no longer the pure person who first arrived in this world.
Shaking his head with a chuckle, he mused, who is truly pure? Aren't they all just pursuing various reasons and going their separate ways?
They were like passersby playing in his mind—Slide—or perhaps former friends, enemies, or significant figures.
“Sorry for being late.”
The apologetic voice interrupted Shasha's thoughts. He smiled nonchalantly, “No problem, I haven't ordered yet. Let’s see what you want to eat.”
“Actually, you didn’t have to wait for me,” Elizabeth said thoughtfully as she took the menu. After a quick glance, she called over the waiter and ordered two of the restaurant's famous Australian Steaks and a Boston Lobster.
Once the order was placed, she tucked her slightly disheveled hair behind her ear and sighed lightly. “Things haven’t gone smoothly.”
“They don’t want to continue the collaboration?” Shasha asked, already anticipating this outcome.
Elizabeth nodded. “They promised to pay the breach of contract fee, and the project collaboration has been handed over to Vanguard Technology.”
Hearing the name of that company made Shasha's brow furrow slightly. He had almost forgotten about it, not expecting it to reappear in his life in this manner.
He recalled that the mastermind behind that company was Aldrich Killian, the villain from Iron Man who had been stood up by Tony—a geneticist. The chief engineer of that company was Ivan Vanko, known as Whiplash, who possessed core technology from Stark Industries.
These two were clearly targeting Tony but now seemed to be focusing on him instead.
After a moment of silent contemplation, Shasha relaxed his furrowed brow and revealed a faint smile. “It’s fine; if they don’t want to collaborate, it doesn’t matter. The company isn’t lacking in projects anyway.”
Elizabeth observed Shasha closely, trying to gauge whether he truly didn’t care. However, she found it difficult to read his thoughts.
When their meals arrived, she suddenly asked tentatively, “Should we apply pressure on Vanguard Technology?”
Shasha shook her head, rejecting the proposal. "No need, it's just a matter."
Elizabeth nodded, steering the conversation towards some trivialities of life.
The meal was quite enjoyable, though the only downside was that Shasha remained in a state of deep thought. This mood persisted until he dropped Elizabeth off at her home.
Silently watching Elizabeth smile and wave goodbye before entering the house, Shasha had no intention of leaving just yet.
Inside, Brian was idly watching television. When he saw Elizabeth, he greeted her and watched as she returned to her room, a strange expression crossing his face.
Outside, Shasha closed his eyes for a moment before driving away in silence.
In her room, Elizabeth lay on the bed, her exhaustion making her almost forget what she had done that day. It felt as if she had never left home, as if she had merely experienced a vague dream.
Far away in another city, the Black Queen closed her eyes wearily. "It seems he has discovered something."
As this invisible struggle began to settle, Felicia made her next visit to Desert Prison.
Lao Xiao leaned back in his rocking chair, appearing like a half-dead man savoring his remaining time.
Approaching him, Felicia said calmly, "I have gained Emma Frost's trust."
At her words, Lao Xiao's closed eyelids fluttered slightly. He spoke slowly, "In the room where your father once stayed, he hid some things related to the Black Queen."
Felicia nodded and turned to leave without hesitation.
Once Felicia was out of earshot, a barely perceptible smile curved Lao Xiao's lips as he murmured, "Even if a person loses all their abilities, they can still regain everything through wisdom. You claim to possess a thousand years of wisdom; can you see through my intentions?"
Guided by Lao Xiao's words, Felicia arrived at the cell where her father had once been held. She slowly touched the objects within the cell until she sat on the bed where her father had slept, a hint of melancholy on her face.
After a moment, she lay down and reached for a hidden compartment beside the pillow where a letter was tucked away.
Taking the letter in her trembling fingers, Felicia realized that sometimes the truth is cruel; there are moments you wish to avoid experiencing again but must face nonetheless.
As the words came into view, her eyes began to redden.
"To my dear Felicia,"
"When you read this letter, I may no longer be among the living. Because I have learned things I should not have known."
"I sincerely hope that I would not have to write this letter, as I do not wish for you to be involved. However, this matter concerns not only you but every single person in this country."
"Pay close attention, and after reading, burn this letter."
"It all began with that mission."
As the words unfolded, Felicia was too shocked to reminisce about her father; her emotions were replaced by disbelief and horror.
By the time she reached the end, her face had turned pale.
