In the next moment, the calm surface of the water seemed to boil violently, churning with intensity. A strong, fishy odor wafted through the air.
"What’s happening?" I asked, covering my nose and looking at my grandfather in terror.
"I don’t know. There’s something down there!" he replied, his expression grave.
As he spoke, my grandfather pulled out a red string and tied a copper coin to one end before tossing it into the water. The moment the coin touched the surface, it was yanked down by an immense force.
My grandfather held onto the red string tightly, but it was clear that his strength was no match for whatever lay beneath the surface. After just a few seconds, the string snapped in his hands.
"This is bad!" His face turned pale.
Almost simultaneously with the breaking of the string, a large tear suddenly appeared in the fishing net he held. Following that, a tremendous force surged from below, pulling both me and my grandfather into the water.
In the chaos, I felt something grab my foot, dragging me into deeper waters. I struggled desperately, but the grip around my ankle tightened with each passing moment. Looking down, I was horrified to see that what ensnared me was a mass of hair-like tendrils.
"Help!" I opened my mouth to call for my grandfather. But as soon as I did, icy lake water rushed in.
The cold water flooded into my mouth and nose, filling my lungs and making me feel as if I were about to explode. Just when I thought I would suffocate, a surge of warmth suddenly radiated from my chest.
The heat surged into my mind, jolting me awake. I quickly kicked against the water and shot up to the surface.
"Ha!"
Finally breaking the surface, I opened my mouth wide, greedily inhaling the fresh air.
I quickly looked around and found that Grandpa had already swum back to the boat, searching for me anxiously.
“Gangzi, are you alright?” he asked, pulling me onto the Inflatable Raft with a concerned expression.
“I’m fine,” I replied, shaking my head as I recounted what had just happened underwater.
After listening to me, Grandpa fell silent for a long while.
“It seems that this reservoir is not clean,” he sighed. “But thankfully you have this jade pendant for protection; otherwise, it could have been troublesome.”
Grandpa looked at the jade pendant around my neck with a serious expression.
“Grandpa, what is the origin of this pendant?” I asked curiously.
“This pendant is called Kui; it’s a treasure passed down from our ancestors,” Grandpa explained slowly. “There are two pieces of Kui; you and your brother each wear one.”
“Kui?” I murmured as I stroked the pendant. “Why do my brother and I wear such pendants?”
“Because both of you have very special physiques,” Grandpa said solemnly. “You and your brother are both Extreme Yin Bodies.”
“Extreme Yin Body?” I was slightly taken aback.
“Indeed, both of you brothers possess the Extreme Yin Body, which easily attracts Evil Spirits,” my grandfather nodded.
“That’s also why I haven’t taught you Body Retrieval.”
Hearing his words, I suddenly understood. No wonder my grandfather had always opposed letting my brother and me learn Body Retrieval. At first, I thought it was because it was too dangerous, but now it seemed it was because we both had the Extreme Yin Body.
“What is the use of this jade pendant?” I asked curiously.
“Kui represents pure Yang; evil entities cannot approach it at all,” my grandfather explained.
I stroked the jade pendant, deep in thought. In my dreams, my brother had always pointed at my chest. Could it be that he wanted to tell me about the pendant?
The night breeze brushed over the water's surface, making me shiver involuntarily.
“Grandpa, how about I go into the water and take a look?” I suggested after some thought.
“You?” My grandfather looked at me in surprise.
“No way, it's too dangerous. That thing you mentioned earlier is definitely something unclean; our falling into the water must have stirred it up.”
“What should we do then? You’re getting older, and your lungs aren’t good; I can’t let you go down there. Don’t worry, I have Kui with me; didn’t I come out fine after falling into the water just now?”
“We promised that woman we would do Body Retrieval; we can’t go back on our word.”
“I’ve been swimming in the river with you and my brother since I was little; don’t you know my swimming skills?” After considering for a moment, my grandfather had no other options and could only nod in agreement.
"Alright then, be careful!"
"I know."
I took a deep breath, flashlight in hand, and jumped straight into the water.
It was already past two in the morning.
After what had just happened, I felt a bit uneasy.
But for the sake of avenging my brother, I couldn't afford to think too much about it.
I fought against my inner fear, shining the flashlight across the water's surface, carefully searching for any trace of the corpse.
The reservoir was deep, and the light below was dim.
I swept the flashlight around but found nothing.
"How strange, where could it have gone?"
I scratched my head, feeling a bit lost.
I clearly remembered that the hair that had entangled me was around this spot; how could it suddenly vanish?
After pondering for a moment, I suddenly slapped my forehead.
"Could it be that I went the wrong way?"
With that thought, I quickly surfaced and communicated with my grandfather about my position.
Taking another deep breath, I submerged again.
Following my grandfather's directions, I soon reached the place where the incident had occurred.
However, aside from a broken fishing net on the bottom, there was no sign of the corpse at all.
As I contemplated whether to surface again, suddenly, a shadow appeared behind me.
I turned around and was startled to find a female corpse silently standing behind me, her long hair swirling like tentacles as it reached toward my neck.
