Chapter 18: Ghost Month Taboos (Part Eight)
Han Mi replied, "Brother Qi, I won't marry anyone else. My heart is only for you; I can't accommodate anyone else."
I sent her a picture expressing my love.
Han Mi continued, "My dad has been acting strangely lately. He comes to our house every night. He's the new cadre in the village and wouldn't have come to our house before. I don't know what he's here for."
"Don't worry. Just wait for me. Once I figure things out, I'll come to get you."
"No, I can't wait that long. I want to see you right now."
Life is indeed filled with infatuation, and meeting someone like Han Mi is enough for me. What I care about is her current situation; she loves to cry, enjoys watching shows, and when the plot gets emotional, she cries endlessly.
"Have you cried recently?"
Han Mi replied, "I haven't cried. Brother Qi, if you're thinking of me, I'll come to see you right away."
"Silly girl, alright, I miss you."
Han Mi laughed and sent me a series of smiley faces. Just as I was about to respond, a notification popped up from my registered public account, Ma Qi Paranormal Circle, which could only be accessed by members of Ma Wu Funeral Home: there was a new message.
I was using the hospital's network, which I had gotten the password for from Chi Xinrong when she asked a nurse for it. I should be grateful to her for that. However, such gratitude could only remain in my heart; saying too much might lead to misunderstandings.
Joining Ma Qi Paranormal Circle and becoming a member of Ma Wu Funeral Home is quite simple: one just needs to defeat the ghost guarding the entrance in a game mode to become a free member of Ma Wu Funeral Home. Members can enjoy all the supernatural stories that I personally share.
As someone born in the '90s, many people enjoy thrilling online games. Especially after a tiring day at work, they seek extra excitement as a way to vent and relieve stress. That's why I impulsively registered for this public account about the supernatural, looking for companions who share similar interests in paranormal events.
After being busy for a while, I hadn't logged into this circle for a long time. Now, as I opened the new message notifications and entered the circle, I realized there were many people. Moving the mouse, I clicked on a new message, revealing a string of text.
"Ma Qi Hello, Circle Master. I am Funeral Director. I would like to ask for your help in organizing a funeral online. The funeral setting must synchronize with the real-life ceremony. The details regarding Deceased, including identity, age, and height, have been sent to your email. Please contact us."
I replied in the message box: "Regarding Ghost Month Taboos, you should know that everything must patiently wait until after Ghost Month. This is also a special taboo of our Ma Wu Funeral Home. My grandfather had many Ghost Month Taboos, and we just need to remember this one; there are no other major issues."
It seemed that Han Mi had gone silent; her mother must have discovered she was chatting with me and confiscated her computer. I thought this but still couldn't give up. I opened QQ to chat with her, but her profile picture was gray—she was indeed offline.
Sighing, just as I was about to log off, a new message notification pinged. I hurriedly opened it and was instantly stunned; someone had set up a mourning hall on my Supernatural Circle page.
White flowers, Portrait, Funeral Wreath, eternal remembrance!
I scrolled through my phone screen, trying to see whose Portrait it was. As my finger slid across the screen, the surrounding light suddenly dimmed. Looking up, I noticed that the lights in the intensive care unit had gone out without me realizing it.
Not only that, but the corridor lights also extinguished in an instant. Cursing under my breath, I quickly got up and rushed toward the Nurse Station. The corridor felt long as my footsteps echoed in the deep hallway. There’s something here! I stopped abruptly, performed a hand gesture, and chanted an incantation to activate Demon Eyes: "Open!"
This was not the first time using Demon Eyes since it had been damaged by Li Gui. After activating it, what I saw shocked me. This place didn’t resemble a hospital at all; instead, it felt like being in an empty expanse shrouded in eerie ghostly energy, surrounded by darkness with no light whatsoever.
I looked toward a spot further away and was startled to see a line of people standing side by side. At the same time, I noticed two figures dressed in black clothes and pants with pointed hats holding soul-calling banners, chattering away about something incomprehensible.
One of them noticed me and muttered loudly, "There's another one here."
Maregebi! Is this the underworld? The figures in pointed hats and black clothes holding soul-calling banners looked familiar; I think I've seen them in one of my grandfather's stories—my grandfather and his companions are Soul Reapers. So who are all these people lined up here?
As those figures drifted toward me, their white soul-calling banners stood out starkly against the darkness, swaying eerily in the wind. One of the approaching Soul Reapers extended its long ghostly claw toward me; I could clearly see its sharp long nails.
I ran—not just any run but straight toward the line of people. I wanted to see who they were at the last moment! The Soul Reaper didn't expect me to make such a move; instead of fearing them, I charged directly toward the arranged lineup. Before they could react, I had already reached them.
The neatly arranged figures lowered their heads, exuding a Deathly Aura.
"Who are you all? Lift your heads so I can see."
As if receiving a command, the bowed figures suddenly raised their heads to look at me.
Pale faces stared back, each more grotesque than the last. I froze on Lin Tai's face, blood oozing from his seven orifices, his expression blank. Logically, the next should have been Chiang, but strangely, he was absent. Instead, I saw the Gatekeeper Zhao Liu and Ye Zi—
The Soul Reaper's ghostly claw reached out, muttering, "It's Mortician. No wonder the dead obey him so well. Buddy, he hasn’t finished his time yet; let’s retreat." With a whoosh, the figures standing in the clearing vanished as if they had never existed.
With no target left, I panicked and shouted into the void, "Damn Ghostly Enforcer! Grabbing souls without any reason!"
"Ma Qi, Ma Qi, wake up."
"Who’s calling me? Who?"
"Ma Qi, wake up! You’re dreaming again. Don’t make Grandpa spank you."
"Grandpa... Grandpa... my grandpa is dead. He doesn’t want to be melted away or become food for snakes and insects. He’s in the dark room in his coffin..." My consciousness sharpened as fragmented memories surfaced. A pair of strong hands pressed down on my shoulders; they felt heavy, and I suddenly opened my eyes.
It was Qin Jian!
"You had a nightmare?"
"When did you arrive?"
"I came to check on you tonight before heading to Ten-Mile Temple tomorrow."
"Oh." I straightened up, feeling drenched in sweat! Wait, there were so many wandering, elusive shadows around. Looking at Qin Jian, he truly had no idea that a repulsive face was slowly creeping up behind him.
"Qin Jian, take out your Five Emperor Coins."
"Do you still want to see them?" Qin Jian asked lazily, not wanting to pull out the Five Emperor Coins right away.
"It's not that I want to see them; it's to save you."
Upon hearing this, Qin Jian hurriedly took out the Five Emperor Coins, and a flash of golden light appeared. The ghost that had been pressing against him vanished, and I shielded my Demon Eyes again. Looking closely, we were still in the hospital, still in the intensive care unit's waiting area.
The lights in the intensive care unit were on.
"What’s wrong with you?" Qin Jian asked in confusion, his neck adorned with a red silk cord hanging outside, looking at me with surprise.
