Chapter 17: Disguise
Having prepared everything, I got up to open the door.
The nurse glanced at me and then at Chi Xinrong lying on the bed behind me. "Your friend needs to step out for a moment; we need to check your body."
Chi Xinrong lied effortlessly, without a hint of embarrassment, and replied decisively, "No need for a check-up; my boyfriend just examined me."
The nurse stood awkwardly in place, neither leaving nor daring to approach.
"Isn't it time for you to leave? Do you need my Uncle to come before you feel at ease?"
"That's not it, Chi Beauty. We heard you don't have a boyfriend. If he checked your body, we can't just let that go..."
"Whether he is my boyfriend or not is none of your business," Chi Xinrong said harshly. She was causing a scene without regard for the situation, and I was genuinely worried about her.
"Chi Beauty, if you feel uncomfortable, we have a wheelchair here. You can sit in it, and we'll take you somewhere else for the examination."
There was no way Chi Xinrong would agree to leave with the nurse. She looked at me for help, firmly refusing to comply, her hands gripping the bed tightly.
"Get away from us! If my girlfriend doesn't want to go, she won't go. I’ve already examined her thoroughly; she’s gradually getting better. We don’t need you barging in and disrupting our private space."
Initially, the nurse insisted, but upon realizing my acknowledgment of my relationship with Chi Xinrong and seeing how we were nestled together, it was clear we were more than just casual friends; we looked like a couple in love. The nurse's anger was futile; she had no choice but to compromise. As she left the room, I overheard her whispering, "I’ll go tell the Head Nurse."
Just after the nurse left, Qin Jian arrived. I liked how decisively he acted; he found my room without error and immediately asked, "What’s going on?"
"We're in big trouble. You need to help us figure out how to rescue Rongrong without her getting hurt."
Qin Jian chuckled lightly. "Don't joke around. We're in a hospital, and it's her Uncle's hospital. How could she possibly get hurt?"
"You don’t understand anything. He hasn’t given up on reviving Chiang. He set this whole thing up to place her here; who knows if there are needles or surveillance cameras in this room." I stood up and began inspecting the walls inch by inch. Seeing me do this, Qin Jian instinctively started checking the lights and opened another glass door to look around: "I didn’t see any needles or surveillance cameras, but I did find a private bathroom."
"Stop joking around and think of something quickly."
I was impatient; this matter needed to be resolved as soon as possible. Time waits for no one. It was truly infuriating to see Qin Jian so calm and collected. He glanced at me, then at Chi Xinrong, and with a mischievous grin asked, "Come on, just admit it—were you two together last night?"
"Get lost! She's covered in injuries; she's a patient! Don't you have any sympathy?" I punched Qin Jian, but my fist bounced back as if hitting a stone wall. "What the hell? How do you train?"
"Winter training in the cold, summer training during the Dog Days," Qin Jian replied nonchalantly, pushing me toward the bedside. "Compared to you and Chi Xinrong's height and build, you're slightly better off. If she lies on the bed, how about I take her away?"
I had to admit, Qin Jian was clever.
Why hadn't I thought of that?
"Alright, Rongrong, you take off your clothes and leave with Qin Jian. He'll take you to a safe place."
Chi Xinrong shifted slightly, giving an awkward smile. "How can I take off my clothes if you two don't leave?"
"Seriously, we'll guard the door for you. Just hurry up and change."
Qin Jian and I moved to the doorway when Chi Xinrong added, "No way! You both need to give me your clothes." I was taken aback for a moment but then nodded and unhesitatingly took off my jacket and tossed it to her on the bed.
"Ma Qi, aren't you afraid I'll take her away and do something to her?"
"You? I don't believe you."
Qin Jian laughed, reaching for a cigarette but stopped when he saw the 'No Smoking' sign hanging from the chandelier above him.
It was only when we heard a soft knocking from inside the room that we finally stepped in.
Chi Xinrong was waiting in my clothes.
I put on the patient gown she had taken off, but I couldn't fasten the buttons, exposing my well-defined chest muscles and a few strands of chest hair. "Buddy, take your time. I'll take her away, and you can handle the rest yourself," Qin Jian said.
Qin Jian dressed Chi Xinrong as a suspect, handcuffed her, and even blindfolded her. The nurses and doctors in the hospital dared not question him after just a glance at his work ID and police badge; who would stop him to check who he was taking away?
I lay on the one-meter-wide hospital bed, feeling quite uncomfortable.
The bed creaked under the strain; I was intentionally making it difficult. The IV drip that had been dripping water finally became useless as I threw it to the floor. Then, I headed to the bathroom to take a shower.
I could hear some commotion outside the glass door.
However, it was impossible to see inside clearly from the outside due to the steam.
While I was showering, a nurse came in and was surprised to see the IV drip on the floor. I could hear them talking, but since there was a frosted glass barrier, I couldn't catch everything. However, when they approached the glass and knocked, I heard them clearly.
"Chi Beauty, once you're done showering, stay in your room. An expert will come to examine your injuries shortly."
I stood there naked in the shower, enjoying my wash, indifferent to their words and unable to respond. After a while, when White Shadow stopped moving on the glass, I figured they had left. I quickly got dressed, grabbed a sheet from the bed to wipe my wet hair, and hurried out.
No one outside seemed suspicious of me.
I strode confidently toward the exit of the hospital, stepped onto the street, and before getting into a car, I contacted Fatty. As soon as the call connected, before I could say anything, he blurted out, "Brother Qi, something strange happened! I received a huge sum of money—exactly one million."
"Are you joking?"
"No, I'm serious! I don't know who it is; someone left a package on the counter. When I picked it up, it felt heavy. When I opened it, there was so much cash!"
"Did you check carefully? Is it real money?"
"I checked thoroughly; it's definitely real! We're going to get rich, Brother Qi! No matter what happens this time, we need to plan carefully on how to use this money."
"Listen carefully, there are no free lunches falling from the sky for you and me. If that money is real, let me ask you one question: is someone trying to buy our lives? That's life money."
"Don't scare me," Fatty hung up before I could finish my sentence.
Damn!
I couldn't go to the Haunted House anymore, nor could I expect Fatty to help. I had to rush back to Ma Wu Funeral Home to see what was going on. The bus today felt too slow, and the driver was an Old Driver.
The Old Driver was overly cautious, driving at a snail's pace that made me anxious. Several times I thought about getting off and running straight back to Ma Wu Funeral Home, but the long distance ahead made me give up on that idea.
Finally, the bus arrived at my stop.
I sprinted towards Ma Wu Funeral Home like it was a hundred-meter dash. People saw me and probably thought something was wrong ahead; they asked, but I ignored them. I ran and ran, gasping for breath, sweat pouring down my body like I had just taken a shower, and my legs felt weak by the time I reached the entrance of Ma Wu Funeral Home.
Fatty saw me and eagerly pulled me inside, saying, "Brother Qi, it's really money! It's a stack of sequential bills, one red bill after another—so delightful!"
