Chapter 6: Fateful Path (Part 22)
I nodded in appreciation at Qin Jian, unsure of the connection between Zhang Xian and Li Luwen. My full attention was on my phone, hoping that Han Lan would have a change of heart and share everything she knew with us.
Under Chi Xinrong's prompting, Zhang Xian began to recount the entanglements they had with Li Luwen.
Li Luwen was an intern, new to the hospital and unfamiliar with her surroundings. Coupled with her rather plain appearance, she faced a lot of bullying and ridicule from many people in the hospital. Additionally, she was particularly insecure and suspicious; no matter whether others were discussing her or not, she would always tie herself to the situation.
One day, while following her mentor's and colleagues' instructions to inspect the wards, she overheard some people talking as she approached the office door: "Hey, she must have some connections to get here, right?"
Someone replied, "No way. With her looks, what connections could she possibly have?"
"Exactly. How can someone who looks like that even be a doctor?"
The speaker was none other than Zhang Xian, Li Luwen's supervising mentor.
Hearing her most respected mentor speak like this made Li Luwen's hands tremble with anger. Unable to contain her rage, she pushed the door open. The moment she entered, all sounds in the room ceased, and every pair of eyes turned toward Li Luwen at the door.
"You are shameless."
Everyone in the office completely ignored Li Luwen's presence. She could curse all she wanted, but no one paid her any mind. Only Zhang Xian stood up defiantly and shouted, "Decency! As a medical professional, you have lost even the most basic decency. What right do you have to continue your internship here? You should just go home!"
Zhang Xian's words were undoubtedly a final verdict, meaning that Li Luwen had to leave her internship position. Not completing her internship meant she wouldn't graduate. The various situations during an internship were a fatal blow for every intern and cast a shadow over their future job applications.
Who would want someone who couldn't even complete their internship?
Li Luwen couldn't bear this blow and stumbled out of the office, collapsing downstairs. She was later helped to the break room by Pharmacist Sun Yue. After receiving an IV drip, her condition improved; however, for reasons unknown, despite feeling better, Li Luwen fell into another scandal.
If Zhang Xian hadn't appeared and shared their entanglements with Li Luwen, I wouldn't have focused so intently on listening. The more I listened, the more I felt there was something I had overlooked. Yes, that face—it was the same face that appeared in Mo Feng's consciousness; it was also familiar when he saw Li Luwen for the first time. Was that face Li Luwen's? Just as I was in shock over this realization, Zhang Xian suddenly paused in her narration. I quickly asked, "What happened?"
"Not long after that incident, rumors spread that Sun Yue and Li Luwen were involved in something inappropriate... Then the director demanded that Li Luwen leave the hospital, and that's how she ended up like this."
Qin Jian finally couldn't hold back any longer and asked what I also wanted to know: "So what do you think of her?"
"I... I don't have a good impression of her either. Her character is lacking; she's involved in something unclear with a pharmacist during her internship period. She's not particularly outstanding and has caused so much trouble..."
"Quality? Discussing someone in the office isn't a matter of quality? As a teacher, if you can't even set a good example for yourself, how can you be a mentor?" I slammed my hand on the table, startling everyone into silence. Qin Jian knew the reason for my anger but said nothing.
"I... I didn't know she would turn out like this. Rongrong called me here to tell you that, actually, this matter with Li Luwen is our responsibility. The dean wanted to downplay it, but Rongrong insisted I reveal the truth... or else she'd force me to leave."
"Let me tell you the truth!" Qin Jian and the others were stunned, unsure of what truth I was about to reveal.
"This trip you took is actually related to Li Luwen's coma. I still don't understand what turmoil is in her heart; mere arguments and slander couldn't drive her to murder. The key lies in who her mother contacted—could they be using her resentment to achieve their murderous goals?"
Zhang Xian, Qin Jian, and Chi Xinrong gasped at my words.
Soul Separation had happened before with Peng Yan, and now Li Luwen was experiencing something similar—perhaps even worse. Sha Hong's fate was uncertain as she lay in a coma, coincidentally also in the ICU of City Hospital.
What we needed to do now was stop Li Luwen from continuing her killing spree. Whether it was foresight or fate, I had previously placed a talisman on Li Luwen, which was now having an unexpected effect.
Her soul was trapped within her body, temporarily posing no threat to Sha Hong.
We couldn't afford to worry about Han Lan; we rushed straight to Li Luwen's hospital room only to find it empty.
Chi Xinrong went to ask the Head Nurse, who replied, "We received notice to re-examine Li Luwen; she's been taken to the examination room."
What a false alarm! I feared someone might have abducted Li Luwen and continued harming innocent people. We hurried to the lab, where we found Li Luwen's mother crying out, "Help! My daughter has been taken by a bad person!"
"The worst has happened; if the Evil Sorcerer has taken Li Luwen, he could easily break the talisman I've placed on her and continue his killing plan."
"We'll split up. I'll go this way; you check the emergency exit," I told Qin Jian as we separated to search for Li Luwen. Chi Xinrong went to check the surveillance footage while Zhang Xian trembled uncontrollably, clearly overwhelmed by fear.
If it weren't for Zhang Xian recounting what had happened, I wouldn't have realized that even a civilized hospital could exhibit such discriminatory practices. Li Luwen had grievances and resentment; the Evil Sorcerer was exploiting this situation.
I ran a few steps before returning to where I started, focusing intently on Li Luwen's mother, who was sobbing dramatically. "You almost fooled me! Li Luwen hasn't been abducted at all; you want to get her out of the hospital, don't you?"
"I... she..." Li Luwen's mother stammered, her face flushed and unable to articulate a coherent response.
I sneered and said, "Don't think that leaving here will save your daughter. The truth is that as long as she remains in the hospital, there is hope for her survival—and only I can save her."
"Really, he is just like that."
"Auntie believes in Buddhism, right?"
"How do you know?"
"People who believe in Buddhism have kind faces and a faint scent of sandalwood about them. This is the aura left on them from frequent visits to temples. Also, Auntie, you are destined for longevity, but your fate has brought you suffering due to old traditions. Your in-laws treat you poorly, and your husband doesn't care for you. Your only hope lies in this daughter, so you should think about what to do!"
"You are so accurate. I often go to the temple to pray for blessings, hoping my daughter grows up healthy and that my husband will change his mind. But things have not gone as I wished; I haven't achieved any of my desires and instead ended up like this."
"One misstep leads to another, Auntie. The person you found is not a good person. He is using your daughter to harm others. A true believer in Buddhism, if they are genuinely good-hearted, would not face retribution. By allowing this to happen, you are essentially aiding evil, which is why your wishes remain unfulfilled, Auntie..."
Li Luwen's mother was in tears, raising her hand to point towards the storage room downstairs. "She is inside; if we delay any longer, she might really be taken away."
