Chapter 416: True Feelings Revealed in Adversity 0

Chi Xinrong rushed in, startled, and in her haste, she accidentally tipped over the sputum cup she was holding. Fortunately, there wasn't much inside. She shot me a glare, as if to say, "What’s wrong with you? Why are you running?" Just as she finished speaking, Ma Ge burst in. 0

Chi Xinrong was momentarily dumbfounded, fearing that Ma Ge had overheard her earlier words. Embarrassed, she obediently took the dirty items that Qin Jian had pulled out and headed to the restroom. 0

"What did she say?" Ma Ge asked, and I felt a wave of relief for Chi Xinrong; he hadn’t heard her words. 0

"Nothing much. She was just rambling in a panic; don’t think too much about it." Without bothering to invite Ma Ge to sit down, I hurriedly turned my attention back to Qin Jian. 0

Qin Jian looked surprisingly well; his complexion was rosy, and various medical devices surrounded him, beeping softly. Suddenly, I realized there was no guard at the entrance and asked Chi Xinrong, who had just come out, what had happened. 0

"The guards have been withdrawn," she replied. 0

"You said he woke up; how come we made such a commotion and he didn’t react at all?" 0

"He’s sleeping!" Chi Xinrong's demeanor softened as she gazed lovingly at Qin Jian while her hands busily tidied up this and that. 0

I rarely got a close look at Qin Jian while he was asleep, but now I could see that he wasn’t sleeping very soundly. Even so, the resilience etched on his brow was something extraordinary. He showed no signs of waking up, and Chi Xinrong explained that it was due to the medication. 0

Well, medication can indeed make someone sleep deeply. I thought of that strange person she mentioned earlier and asked her to describe him again—what kind of oddball was he? 0

Chi Xinrong frowned and shook her head. "I don’t remember; my cultural knowledge is lacking," she said self-deprecatingly. Her ability to express herself verbally was quite poor, making it difficult for her to detail what she had seen of that strange person. 0

Since I couldn’t recall what the oddball looked like either, I suggested checking the surveillance footage in the hallway. 0

Chi Xinrong nodded in agreement and temporarily entrusted Qin Jian's care to Ma Ge. The two of us hurried off to review the surveillance footage. 0

In hospitals, not everyone can access the surveillance footage easily. However, since Chi Xinrong was now an important figure at the hospital—a major shareholder—whatever she wanted would be promptly attended to by the director. 0

I, Chi Xinrong, noticed that you, Qin Jian, truly care. I can see the dark circles under your eyes; why not find a reliable Intensive Care nurse to take over for a bit, so you don't have to struggle so much? 0

Chi Xinrong pouted. Other matters could be delegated, but this one had to be handled personally. 0

Damn, I couldn't help but think that Qin Jian is indeed fortunate. I never expected Chi Xinrong to show such a thoughtful side. Seeing me silent, Chi Xinrong teased whether I regretted not choosing her. 0

I was serious; joking now seemed out of place, but I had to speak up. It wasn't that I didn't like you; I just felt incapable of giving you happiness. 0

This left someone stunned for two seconds before they quickened their pace and deliberately changed the subject to how long it would take Qin Jian to recover, warning me not to put any pressure on him. 0

Was Chi Xinrong really naive or just pretending? After all, Qin Jian was the boss; how could a mere subordinate like me put pressure on him? 0

As we walked and talked, time flew by, and before we knew it, we had arrived at the monitoring room. 0

The staff in the monitoring room recognized Chi Xinrong. Upon hearing that we wanted to check the footage from the Intensive Care unit, they quickly assisted in pulling up the surveillance feed. The timestamps matched perfectly with the time I had asked him to lock in when Chi Xinrong called. 0

The Intensive Care unit was quieter than other wards, with fewer people coming and going. At the entrance, we saw Chi Xinrong moving in and out, along with doctors entering and exiting. Suddenly, a flash of White Shadow appeared at the door, and then the screen emitted a crackling sound before glitching— 0

What was happening? I moved the mouse to reopen the view and locked onto the sequence I had seen earlier. When I spotted that White Shadow again, the screen glitched automatically. 0

Something was off. I hurriedly left the monitoring room with Chi Xinrong. The somewhat clueless staff member continued rambling about nonsense, trying to explain that the glitch wasn't his fault and must have been a wiring issue. 0

Anxiously, I walked ahead while Chi Xinrong followed behind. After a while, he struggled to keep up, panting heavily as if something was scaring him for no reason. 0

I went to see Qin Jian to understand what was going on. 0

Chi Xinrong sighed and helplessly caught up with me until we reached Qin Jian's Intensive Care unit shortly after. 0

Ma Ge was not in the hospital room; instead, he was sitting on a chair outside the door, engrossed in a newspaper he must have found somewhere. 0

Hearing footsteps, Ma Ge looked up and saw us. He shook the newspaper and stood up. Qin Jian was still asleep, seemingly unaffected by anything significant. 0

I glanced at the newspaper in Ma Ge's hand; it must have come from the nurses. Chi Xinrong and I entered the room one after the other, with Ma Ge following us in. 0

Qin Jian remained asleep, his breathing steady and normal, and he looked to be in good condition. 0

It seemed I had truly been overthinking things; perhaps there was something else going on! 0

Maybe Chi Xinrong was just too exhausted and needed some fresh air. Now that we were here, she left with a pained expression to take a breather outside. 0

I had just managed to catch my breath, my thoughts still tangled in the recent incident, when Ma Ge decided to step out to buy cigarettes as well. 0

That left me alone in the room with the sleeping Qin Jian. 0

The events from earlier lingered in my mind, and now that it was quiet, my heart raced from the rush of emotions. 0

The room had a stool, so I took a seat and kept my eyes fixed on Qin Jian, feeling as though he was awake and just pretending to sleep. 0

“Lao Qin, your seventh granduncle is here. Wake up quickly.” 0

Qin Jian didn’t respond. 0

Wow! He was really out cold. 0

After waiting in silence for several minutes, Ma Ge still hadn’t returned from buying cigarettes. Chi Xinrong must have genuinely gone for fresh air or perhaps to discuss something with the female doctor. In any case, I found myself alone in this hospital room facing a man who looked as lifeless as a corpse. It could only be described as utterly tedious. 0

I couldn't remember how many times I had gotten up, how many times I had walked in front of Qin Jian to call out to him, and how many times I had helplessly sat back down. 0

Waiting was truly painful, damn it! Just as I was about to stand up again to shout at him, my phone buzzed with a text message. I looked down in surprise; it was a message from Zhang Xian. 0

Zhang Xian: Ma Qi, I feel like I've seen a ghost. 0

I asked, "What ghost? Can you tell me more?" 0

Zhang Xian: I can't remember what she looks like, but I feel like I've seen her somewhere. 0

I replied, "Is she a woman?" Just then, I sensed movement behind me. Before I could turn around, someone grabbed my neck from behind. With that grip, I knew only Qin Jian had such a habit. He understood short strikes, wrestling, and various combat techniques. 0

“Lao Qin, stop joking.” The pressure around my neck made it hard to breathe; it felt like it was about to snap. I initially thought Qin Jian was just playing around with me, but then I remembered he was lying in bed unable to move, and cold sweat broke out all over me. 0
