Ghost Festival, every household is worshiping. Ye Chenfeng and Ding Li seal the Joss Paper into small envelopes, with the title and name of the recipient written on them, and the time of worship for the number of envelopes received. It’s called “Sending Off the Lonely Souls”. Then tie the "Flower Plate" with paper, put Joss Paper and the offering fruit on it, and Ye Chenfeng will hold it in his hand personally, and walk around the house while reciting: "Close friends, neighbors, former residents, The dead souls who are still reluctant to go back, all the lonely ghosts, please come to FlowerPlate and send you back!" After that, he was burned outside the house. "Are they going back like this?" Ding Li asked Ye Chenfeng while watching the paper Flower Plate floating in the water. "Shh!" Ye Chenfeng shushed, took her hand and quietly left the place of worship. After walking a few steps, a cold wind hit me, and Ye Chenfeng instinctively covered his face with his hands. From between my fingers, I saw Shen Binghan standing quietly on the shore, watching them both silently. Shen Binghan must have something to say. Ye Chenfeng asked Ding Li to wait, and he walked towards Shen Binghan. Ding Li can't see it, but Ye Chenfeng is walking forward with purpose, as if there is someone waiting for him in front. She was pounding in her heart and looked around at the dark surroundings. She felt guilty and couldn't help shouting: "Ye Chenfeng I'm scared." Ye ChenfengLooking back at Ding Li, she really couldn't bear to leave the person there, let alone what happened recently Things are weird. He smiled and waved to Shen Binghan, saying wait a moment. "What, you said there is a person waiting for you in front?" Ding Li stared at it with wide eyes, but there was nothing! She felt that Ye Chenfeng returned to Grandma's House and became nagging, a bit similar to a mental disorder. She was worried, but she didn't dare to leave alone, so she pouted and said, "You can see me, why can't I?" "Because he doesn't want to see you." Ding Li felt that Ye Chenfeng was deliberately scaring herself. , she sneered and said: "You just want to play tricks to make me scared so that I can jump into your arms. Why bother to make up these scary stories."
Ding Li truly seemed to doubt her own words. Ye Chenfeng didn't elaborate much; he simply instructed her to face forward, bend down, and look back between her legs.
"What are you doing?"
This was one of the ten methods for seeing ghosts as noted in the Ghost-Quaking Scripture.
Ye Chenfeng did not tell Ding Li what she might see; he only encouraged her to try.
"Give it a shot."
Half-convinced, Ding Li turned around, bending her body gracefully into an arc as she looked back between her legs—first, she saw a pair of legs and feet clad in gray monk robes. Wasn't that Little Monk Shen Binghan?
Recalling the last time she had seen his corpse wedged in a crevice, his abdomen torn open by something, and other parts damaged, a shiver ran through her. Forgetting to scream, she straightened up and looked back again. She didn’t see Shen Binghan; dazed, she told Ye Chenfeng, "I saw him." Then her body swayed, and she collapsed softly onto the ground.
Shen Binghan approached with a sigh. "People say they want to see ghosts, yet when they do, they get scared like this. Goodness gracious, Amitabha."
"You silly boy, did you receive what I burned for you?"
With a smile, Shen Binghan replied, "Little Monk has entered the empty door; it is all about emptiness. However, I am merely a substitute for a practicing monk. I had hoped to encounter a satisfactory tiger to give me a litter of Little Tigers, but I fell for the Cat Spirit's trick and left this wish unfulfilled."
Ye Chenfeng chuckled. "What’s that? I'll burn two beautiful sisters for you later to satisfy your wishes."
"Goodness gracious! That would be wonderful!"
"Alright."
Ye Chenfeng was worried about whether Ding Li would be alright. Shen Binghan reassured him, "She'll be fine. Just let her sip some clear water gently later on, and she'll wake up." Hearing this from Shen Binghan made Ye Chenfeng's heart soar. Shen Binghan continued, "The Cat Spirit specifically targets those born in the Year of the Rat—whether adults or children—danger lurks on nights of the full moon. Be cautious when you return; the Cat Spirit's malice intensifies on full moon nights. By day it appears human, but by night it loses all humanity. Your grandmother is a Medium; she can only control her rationality during the day. At night, the Cat Spirit will devour everything within her."
"If I can't handle the Cat Spirit, do I have to go find your master?" Ye Chenfeng felt a bit uneasy hearing Shen Binghan talk about how powerful the Cat Spirit was.
"The Cat Spirit is secondary; there are many more challenges you must face, like the Ghost Granny who specifically feeds on Yang energy, and the Evil Spirit from the Four Hospitals. Alright, I can't reveal too much, or else the Little Monk won't get to enjoy the beauties you bestow upon him," Shen Binghan said before vanishing like smoke before Ye Chenfeng's eyes.
Ye Chenfeng carried Ding Li back home.
He prepared a bowl of talisman water, held it in his mouth, and slowly poured it into Ding Li's mouth. When she woke up, her first words were, "Ghost..."
"No ghost, just your husband," Ye Chenfeng said, wiping his mouth clean and chuckling to himself.
Ding Li looked at Ye Chenfeng suspiciously and glanced at herself. Thankfully, her clothes were intact. Suddenly recalling what he had just said, she hurriedly asked, "What did you just say?"
"I... nothing," Ye Chenfeng replied. Not wanting to stir up trouble, especially since they were leaving tomorrow, he had a lot to do tonight. First and foremost was to destroy that Evil God; otherwise, it would pose a threat to the area.
This was their second night in Men'er Gou.
During the day, Ye Chenfeng had gone to the small town to buy a few packs of instant noodles and some pickled vegetables and ham sausages that Ding Li liked. He simply filled his stomach with those before preparing for action.
He gathered a pickaxe, several talisman papers, a large bowl of glutinous rice water, and a basin of Black Dog Blood.
Black Dog Blood was hard to come by; it took all the money Ye Chenfeng had in his pocket for someone to reluctantly agree to let him take the black dog away. He wouldn't dare kill the black dog himself but promised that before its slaughter, he would properly guide it so that it could smoothly enter the Ghost Path and ensure it wouldn't end up in the animal realm.
The black dog seemed to understand his words; it lowered its front paws as if bowing to him in respect.
With everything prepared, Ye Chenfeng told Ding Li to hide while he brought these items before the Evil God in the old house.
Regarding the statement noted in The Ghost-Quaking Scripture, a ritual altar must be set up to contain the evil energy of the Evil God within its statue, effectively sealing away its malevolence to prevent it from escaping and continuing its wicked deeds when the statue is destroyed.
A talisman and a Peach Wood Sword were purchased by Ye Chenfeng at the station. At that time, he had no idea if they would be useful, but unexpectedly, they proved to be essential for this task of destroying the Evil God.
Tonight was the fifteenth of the Ghost Festival, a full moon night.
On full moon nights, the yin energy is at its peak.
Ye Chenfeng knew that a Cat Spirit disguised as his grandmother was about to cause trouble in the city. However, he realized that distant help wouldn't solve immediate problems, so he tried to call his parents to inform them. To his dismay, they dismissed him as talking nonsense, claiming it was unfilial to speak ill of his own grandmother.
Yet, Ye Chenfeng sensed that his parents' tone was different from before.
Though worried, he knew he had to destroy the Evil God before he could safely return to deal with the Cat Spirit.
Setting up the altar and performing the ritual was a first for Ye Chenfeng; he wasn't sure if it would work. Regardless, he followed the instructions from The Ghost-Quaking Scripture, forming hand seals and focusing his mind. He brandished the Peach Wood Sword and recited incantations.
"Clear skies and bright earth, yin is murky while yang is clear. Five or six yin lords, emerge from the depths and enter the underworld. Forever stabilize this place, protect it with celestial power. Step upon the seven stars; may spiritual light endure. As the lamp exists, so does the soul; when the lamp extinguishes, so does the soul vanish. Fearless and undaunted, heed my command. Righteous energy of heaven and earth binds all flows; gold and stone shall yield. Where sincerity goes, urgency follows like a law!"
Boom—The talisman struck out, flames erupted, startling him. He hadn't expected that such casual chanting while wielding the Peach Wood Sword would have such an effect. With newfound confidence, Ye Chenfeng continued chanting: "Divine Ceremony, command thunder! Ghosts and demons tremble in fear; spirits lose their form. Within lies thunderclaps; the Thunder God remains unnamed. Wisdom penetrates through; five energies soar high. Golden light appears swiftly to protect the true being. Urgent as a law!" Whoosh—The Peach Wood Sword pointed directly at the Evil God as a burst of flame soared like a dragon toward its statue.
In an instant, black mist erupted from above the Evil God's head. "Xiao Xiao... you little yellow-haired brat! Do you not know your own strength to dare confront me... Xiao Xiao..."
Oh no, the Evil God escaped! Panic surged through Ye Chenfeng as he fumbled in confusion, cold sweat pouring down his face. Suddenly hearing Ding Li scream startled him further; without thinking much about it, he hastily withdrew and placed the Black Dog Blood back where it belonged before rushing to check on Ding Li.
Ding Li was inside.
When Ye Chenfeng arrived, she seemed fine. He approached her suspiciously and asked while examining her closely, "Were you just screaming?"
"Ding Li is just trying to tease you, what do you think? Are you done?" Ding Li said with a cheerful smile as she leaned closer, wiping the sweat off Ye Chenfeng's face. "Are you hungry? I could make you a late-night snack."
Ye Chenfeng was indeed hungry.
But Ding Li had changed too quickly! Just moments ago, she had been distant and wouldn’t even suggest cooking. Now, she was offering to make him a midnight meal.
"Are you okay?" Ye Chenfeng asked skeptically, unsure if she really intended to cook for him. He glanced around warily; if Evil God showed up here, it would be disastrous.
He didn’t see Evil God, but he noticed some ashes on the ground that looked like something had burned. There was also a faint smell of something charred in the air. He looked down and asked Ding Li, "What did you burn?"
"Nothing much! When are we going back, Ye Chenfeng?"
"Are you talking about returning to the county or the city?"
"Ye Chenfeng, didn’t you promise to take me to the city to study?"
Hearing Ding Li say this reminded Ye Chenfeng of his earlier promise to take her to the city for school. He nodded and replied, "Don’t worry, once I finish up here, we’ll leave."
Ding Li pouted playfully, "No, let’s go now."
What was wrong with Ding Li? She knew there were only two Shuttles available; even if they left now, they wouldn’t catch one! Ye Chenfeng was surprised and exclaimed, "You’re not running a fever, are you?" As he spoke, he reached out to touch her forehead. To his surprise, she eagerly sat down on his lap, her delicate white arms wrapping gently around his neck.
Her lips, soft and petal-like, were so close that he could indulge in their sweetness if he desired.
