Zhou Zhisheng had thick eyebrows and large eyes, complemented by a long face.
People with long faces tend to be meticulous, considering many factors in their work. They are often diligent and responsible, possessing a keen business acumen and excelling in investment and financial management. When it comes to love, they can easily become infatuated with someone they are drawn to, finding it hard to extricate themselves. After marriage, they tend to be considerate towards their wife and children.
Ye Chenfeng observed Zhou Zhisheng's features without revealing his thoughts. The conclusion he reached was that some things are better left unspoken; after all, he was still young and needed to learn more.
Zhou Zhisheng read the introduction letter word for word. Behind his glasses, a pair of deep-set eyes gazed at Ye Chenfeng with a hint of doubt and mistrust. Ye Chenfeng looked decent, with a clever glint in his eyes, but Zhou felt it would be too rash to rely on him for the upcoming events. After a moment of contemplation, he smiled and said, "You're not Shen Binghan, are you?"
Ye Chenfeng was taken aback. Did the introduction letter describe Shen Binghan's appearance? Or was it that his casual attire made him seem too immature? That might have led Zhou to be so certain he wasn't Shen Binghan.
"Child, some things aren't as simple as they appear. You should go back! Thank you for delivering this letter. Please tell my friend that I am doing well." As Zhou spoke these words, he blinked his left eye twice vigorously.
Ye Chenfeng glanced at the receptionist who had not left their side. He pondered the meaning behind Zhou's words and the significance of his winking.
The receptionist was watching him with an expressionless face, hands crossed in front of his abdomen in a habitual manner. Ye Chenfeng felt he had seen this posture before. As Zhou stood up to escort him out, he remained deep in thought.
The receptionist continued to follow them silently, moving almost without a sound like a shadow. His stiff Mandarin and the way he crossed his hands over his abdomen only fueled Ye Chenfeng's suspicions.
Upon reaching the entrance of the Mental Hospital, Zhou Zhisheng shook Ye Chenfeng's hand, alternating between a firm and gentle grip. In the brief moments of their handshake, Ye felt something added in the palm of his hand.
Ye Chenfeng nodded silently as he bid farewell to Zhou Zhisheng. As he withdrew his hand, he casually flexed his fingers under the watchful gaze of the receptionist and strode out of the Four Hospitals' gates. After walking quite a distance, he still felt someone watching him; a chill ran down his spine, preventing him from looking back until he reached the bus station where he finally exhaled in relief.
In the palm of his hand lay a note.
The note bore no words—only an image. A black sun rose slowly, beneath which appeared a menacing Ghostly figure.
Ye Chenfeng looked up at the sky in confusion. At this time of year, it was somewhat difficult to see the sun, especially with the varying degrees of pollution in the city. As the cold winter days approached, smoggy weather became increasingly common, with haze thick enough to block out the sun, carrying a certain level of toxicity.
It was strange; what did Dean Zhou mean by giving me this pattern? What was he trying to tell me?
Not understanding, Ye Chenfeng tucked the note into his pocket and boarded the bus to report to his new school.
Once on the bus, a news segment began to play that seemed related to the Island Nation. Ye Chenfeng saw a row of people standing, all dressed in black suits and ties, their hands crossed over their abdomens. In an instant, he realized why the person he had seen at Four Hospitals had looked so familiar; he must have seen something similar in a movie. A big question mark appeared in Ye Chenfeng's mind: could he be one of the Island Nation people?
But that didn’t make sense!
How could an Island Nation person be just an ordinary receptionist at Four Hospitals?
Unable to make sense of it, Ye Chenfeng refused to give up. He was determined to think it through. He pulled out the note from his pocket and unfolded it. A fellow passenger caught a glimpse of the note and its pattern and muttered, "Hey, little brother, you really know how to play; you even drew the Black Sun."
Ye Chenfeng glanced at the speaker, who also seemed like a student. He put away the note and casually asked, "Are you going to report?"
"Yes, to Purple City Art Academy."
"Oh, so you're studying at an art school. I'm at the School of Civil Engineering."
"The two schools aren't far apart. What's your name?"
"Ye Chenfeng."
“Zheng Zhiming.”
“Hello.”
“Hello.”
The two went from strangers to acquaintances, shaking hands and reminiscing. Zheng Zhiming asked, “The Black Sun you just drew, it’s not related to Black Sun 731, is it?” What was meant to be a casual question jolted Ye Chenfeng awake. Yes! The Black Sun represents a symbol, the same pattern found on the flag of the Island Nation People.
Director Zhou had informed me that there were Island Nation People present in the Four Hospitals. The rising of the Black Sun indicated that there were Island Nation Ghosts within the Four Hospitals! It had to be this way. Ye Chenfeng understood now, feeling a wave of panic wash over him as he looked around, assessing the location where the vehicle had arrived.
“What’s wrong with you?” Zheng Zhiming asked, puzzled by how Ye Chenfeng, who had been fine just moments ago, now seemed lost and restless.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Ye Chenfeng hesitated, wanting to speak but afraid to take the risk of revealing what he knew. He recalled Zhou Zhisheng’s hints and thought of that patient who had chased after him, loudly insisting he wasn’t insane.
If Ye Chenfeng acted impulsively and exposed this information, not only would he fail to save the patients in the Four Hospitals and Director Zhou, but he might also end up committed to the Four Hospitals himself.
Who would believe that there were ghosts in the Four Hospitals, especially Island Nation Ghosts? No one would believe it; they would only say he was delusional and having a breakdown.
Don’t panic! Everything needs careful consideration.
He needed to investigate the origins of the Four Hospitals to determine whether what was happening was real.
With a plan forming in his mind, Ye Chenfeng gradually calmed down and became quiet.
Facing Zheng Zhiming's question, he smiled evasively and said, "I just realized the environment was off; I thought I took the wrong route."
"Haha, how could you possibly take the wrong route? You looked like you were lost just now. Could it be that you have someone special along this way? Trying to brush me off?" Zheng Zhiming teased with a mischievous grin.
"That's not true." Ye Chenfeng, not good at lying, became flustered, scratching his head and blushing. He explained straightforwardly, "But I do have a girlfriend, so I'm not interested in anything outside." He spoke with firm conviction.
"Really?"
"Really."
"You haven't seen the goddesses at our art academy. They are all stunning beauties. I don't know how your girlfriend looks, but I want to test how strong your willpower is." Zheng Zhiming was inviting Ye Chenfeng to visit his art academy to feast his eyes on those graceful and alluring beauties.
"Sure, once I finish some things, I'll definitely come visit you." Ye Chenfeng was too busy for such distractions right now; a heavy weight sat on his mind, and he needed to move that burden before he could freely pursue what he wanted.
Zheng Zhiming got off the bus; there were still two stops until Ye Chenfeng's new school.
Purple City University.
Purple City University is composed of several colleges, including Phoenix Academy (Journalism), School of Civil Engineering (Architecture), School of Science and Engineering, and School of Environmental Health. Ye Chenfeng was studying in the Civil Engineering department because his parents hoped he would become an engineer—specifically one who builds skyscrapers.
Thus, Ye Chenfeng enrolled in a major he wasn't particularly fond of and successfully got accepted into the School of Civil Engineering.
A new school, a new environment, new classmates, and a new dormitory. However, the dormitory wasn't exactly new; it was an old student apartment shaped like a fan. At the entrance of the student apartment stood a row of trees swaying in the wind, and beyond them was a basketball court.
Ye Chenfeng liked this layout; standing by the window of the Boys' Dormitory allowed him to witness his classmates kicking a soccer ball on the playground. The catch was that he had to be in an apartment close to the soccer field to have a chance to see it, so when he approached his dormitory, he let out a disappointed sigh.
His dorm window faced the school parking lot, specifically the underground parking area.
"Hey, classmate, let's have a self-introduction."
The roommate who greeted him looked refined and somewhat delicate, with a figure that was quite feminine and slender.
"Hello everyone, I'm Ye Chenfeng."
The refined-looking boy had long, elegant fingers that seemed suited for playing the piano. He pointed to the other two who were busy tidying their beds and said, "They are occupied right now, so I'll introduce myself first."
Ye Chenfeng smiled and replied, "Alright." He paused his attempt to organize his bed and quietly waited for the other person to introduce himself.
"My name is Shen Binghan."
Ye Chenfeng was taken aback upon hearing this name. There were too many coincidences in this world, but surely it couldn't be a coincidence that his name matched Shen Binghan's! Seeing Ye Chenfeng's stunned expression, Shen Binghan's smile faltered.
"Are you alright?" Shen Binghan asked with a smile, revealing a set of pearly white teeth. His smile was captivating, with two shallow dimples appearing on his cheeks.
He wasn't like Little Monk; Little Monk didn't have such a feminine demeanor and didn't like to smile. Ye Chenfeng told himself as he dismissed the shadow of Little Monk's appearance that seemed to follow him. He offered an apologetic smile to the Shen Binghan before him and asked, "Why did you choose such a name?"
"You’re the fifth person curious about my name. It's actually quite simple; my mom gave me this name because I was born in the cold winter months, so she named me Binghan," Shen Binghan explained. He was from Shanghai and spoke with a thick Shanghai accent, making it difficult for Ye Chenfeng to understand much of what he said.
Then Shen Binghan switched to Mandarin, and they were able to communicate further.
So what are the names of the next two?
One of them finished making his bed; his bunk was above Ye Chenfeng's. He clapped his hands, his voice loud and penetrating, and with a grin said, "My name is Su Bei."
If Shen Binghan's name left Ye Chenfeng in shock, then Su Bei's name must have been even more startling!
Ye Chenfeng was stunned, estimating that the stories of Su Bei and Shen Binghan were not yet complete. Was he destined to continue their past? This thought was merely his own daydreaming; Su Bei's name had an interesting meaning.
Su Bei said, "My mother gave birth to me in Beidaihe. She originally wanted to name me Su Bei Dai, but it sounded awkward, so she dropped 'Dai' and named me Su Bei."
"Alright, nice to meet you, Su Bei." Ye Chenfeng wanted to say that he was also Su Bei, just with a different meaning. Who else had such a complicated background? His body belonged to Su Bei, but his soul was that of Ye Chenfeng.
If he were to share all this, would they still have the courage to share a dorm with him?
Ye Chenfeng forced a smile and turned his gaze toward another roommate who had also tidied up. He secretly wondered if he might be Lin Xintao.
"Hello everyone, my name is Qin Keqing."
Pfft—! Ye Chenfeng, Su Bei, and Shen Binghan all widened their eyes in shock. He was Qin Keqing? The character from Dream of the Red Chamber seemed to be female; he was named Qin Keqing! What was going on!
