Qin Keqing said that his name didn't have any special meaning. He took his mother's surname, and that was all there was to it.
As for Qin Keqing, Shen Binghan, and Su Bei, Ye Chenfeng felt that Qin Keqing seemed to be a bit taciturn and particularly humorless. When they thought of the character Qin Keqing from "Dream of the Red Chamber" upon hearing his name, he became annoyed, straightened his face, and left without a word, slamming the door behind him.
Qin Keqing's name had no particular significance, and Ye Chenfeng also mentioned that his own name didn't carry any special meaning either. In fact, he didn't want anyone to know that his parents were just ordinary workers.
The cheerful atmosphere of their self-introduction faded as soon as Qin Keqing stormed out.
They all understood each other without needing to say anything and busied themselves before leaving. Ye Chenfeng also went out, heading straight for the library.
The school was quite large, but the library's location was unclear. After walking for a while and breaking into a sweat without catching sight of the library, he spotted a female classmate ahead and politely approached her to ask, "Excuse me, could you tell me where the library is?"
The girl was quite attractive, with a delicate face framed by glasses, exuding a scholarly vibe with a hint of shyness. Her beautiful eyes blinked as she replied to Ye Chenfeng, "Are you a freshman?"
Ye Chenfeng thought he had disguised himself well enough to avoid being recognized as a newcomer. He felt embarrassed when she saw through him so easily. Rubbing the back of his head awkwardly, he said, "Yes, how did you know?"
The girl chuckled softly and said, "Isn't it obvious? You’re asking about the library, and it's just ahead..."
Ye Chenfeng focused his gaze and felt utterly speechless. Just under a meter ahead, partially hidden by trees, was an ancient building with a large rock beside it bearing the word "Library" in regular script. While he was still in shock, the girl smiled apologetically, tossed her long hair over her shoulder, and walked straight toward the library, leaving him behind.
I'm so clumsy; I’m not even nearsighted but still missed it. Ye Chenfeng scolded himself internally. He forced himself to calm down and tried to appear natural but ended up stiffening as he stepped into the library.
Inside the library were many people; surrounded by the sound of pages turning, there was hardly any other noise. The rustling of books was so quiet that one could hear a pen drop. As Ye Chenfeng reached the entrance, he had to tread lightly. He presented his card to the librarian and found an empty spot to drop off his backpack before setting out to find books related to the history of Purple City Fourth Hospital.
This was the school library; the card in Ye Chenfeng's hand could serve as both a campus card and a borrowing card.
Any disguise was useless here; even the librarian's sharp gaze could easily identify Ye Chenfeng as a freshman.
When freshmen came to the library, the librarian warmly introduced new books and asked what type of material he needed—whether it was study resources or something unrelated to academics.
Ye Chenfeng had been frustrated for a long time, unable to find any books about the origins of the Four Hospitals. So when the librarian asked, it felt like a timely blessing.
"I’m looking for a book about the Purple City Fourth Hospital."
Even though Ye Chenfeng spoke in a low voice, someone still heard him. One of them was a beautiful classmate he had encountered on the way; she initially widened her eyes in surprise and then stifled a laugh.
What’s so funny? What’s there to be surprised about? Ye Chenfeng scoffed at her reaction. He sniffed the unique scent of the library, patiently waiting for the librarian to help him find the book.
The librarian, also a student at the school, was curious about why Ye Chenfeng wanted such an unusual book but still diligently searched for it as requested.
Finally, a book about the Four Hospitals was placed on Ye Chenfeng's table.
"Student, if you need any further assistance, just come find me. After you leave, please sign this attendance sheet and give feedback on the service quality," said the librarian, a polite young man with refined manners.
"Okay."
Ye Chenfeng cursed inwardly: So this enthusiasm is just an act to get my good review, all for class honor and personal accolades. Does he really need to work this hard? But then he thought about how diligently the librarian had searched for the book, so he felt justified in sitting down to read.
This book not only documented the renovation of the Four Hospitals but also briefly explained the origins of Purple City. It turned out that Purple City wasn’t always called that; it was originally named Duning until it was renamed on April 28, 1998. The establishment of the Purple City Fourth Hospital occurred even earlier, and the history of the Four Hospitals was quite complex.
According to records from the late Qing Dynasty, the original site of the Four Hospitals had once been a brothel before becoming a garrison area for Unit 731 of Island Nation. The book also noted that after the highest leader of Island Nation issued surrender flyers, the soldiers stationed in this area mysteriously disappeared overnight.
There were no bodies found—just an eerie silence—and then the building fell into neglect, leading to rumors that it was haunted.
Later investigations confirmed that it wasn’t ghosts but rather homeless individuals seeking refuge inside at night. Although there were photographs and explanations provided by relevant authorities, rumors of hauntings persisted until national liberation.
After lying abandoned for many years, this place was developed into Purple City's first psychiatric hospital.
"Ye Chenfeng, pay special attention to the name of the reporter who reported this rumor, Xin Dasi! What a strange name."
"Are you studying medicine?"
Startled by the question, Ye Chenfeng looked up from his book to see a female classmate, tilting her head playfully as she held a book in her arms, looking at him with curiosity.
"No."
Her question was subtle, as the term "doctor" carried many implications. She could be implying he was a psychiatrist; otherwise, why would he be reading this book?
"Oh. Which college are you from then?"
"Civil Engineering."
The girl shot him a curious glance, clearly questioning how someone from the School of Civil Engineering could be interested in a psychiatric hospital.
Noticing her curiosity about him, Ye Chenfeng thought that curiosity wasn't a bad thing, but it wasn't entirely good either. He smiled and placed a bookmark on the page he had been reading, then said earnestly, "I'm currently writing an online novel about criminal investigation. The protagonist is a psychologist, so you understand."
"Wow, that's impressive! Has your book been published? Which website?" Ye Chenfeng initially intended to brush off this classmate with a few words, but he underestimated her curiosity. Instead of leaving, she seemed even more intrigued.
Moreover, she casually sat down across from him without his invitation and rested her chin on her hand, quietly waiting for his response.
Having started with a lie about writing an online novel, now that she believed him, he felt compelled to continue fabricating this story.
Feeling frustrated yet determined to keep up the pretense, Ye Chenfeng said, "It's called The Ghost-Quaking Scripture; it hasn't been published yet."
"I love online novels! Recently I've been following one called Eighteen Crimes; it's thrilling!"
"Oh, you still don't know the name of your goddess?"
"You call me goddess... Ha, you're so amusing. My name is Chen Peiling, and you?" As Chen Peiling spoke, her sparkling eyes never left Ye Chenfeng's slightly flushed face.
The delicate young man was just perfect for her. Chen Peiling couldn't help but smile, as if she were examining a piece of uncut jade while gazing at Ye Chenfeng.
Ye Chenfeng felt uncomfortable under her gaze, as if millions of ants were crawling all over him, making him itch all over. Sweat inevitably broke out on his forehead. In his flustered state, he wiped his sweat and accidentally dropped his book on the floor. Bending down to pick it up, he collided with Chen Peiling in the most intimate way possible—his head bumped against her chin.
A dull pain quickly spread through her, causing tears to well up in Chen Peiling's eyes, yet she stubbornly insisted that she was fine. Inside, however, she cursed him; it seemed like this guy had trained in iron head techniques. All she wanted was to help pick up the book he dropped, but unexpectedly, he also reached for it, resulting in their collision.
"Are you really okay?"
Seeing Chen Peiling's fair skin turn red and noticing something rolling in her eyes despite her insistence that she was fine made Ye Chenfeng feel guilty. He stood up and borrowed the book from her. He planned to take her to the school medical room for a check-up. The two walked side by side out of the library, and for a moment, they had nothing to say, walking in silence for quite a distance until Chen Peiling suddenly stopped.
A few students were approaching from ahead, and sensing something amiss, Chen Peiling said to Ye Chenfeng, "I told you I'm fine; you should go back!"
Noticing the students coming their way and seeing Chen Peiling's embarrassed expression, Ye Chenfeng smiled apologetically and said, "Then I'll head back to my dorm. If you have any problems, just call me." He nodded and turned to leave in the opposite direction from Chen Peiling.
After walking a few steps, Chen Peiling noticed Ye Chenfeng deliberately avoiding crowded areas as he turned toward the Boys' Dormitory. Suddenly realizing she hadn't asked for his phone number made her curse inwardly—why did she insist she was fine earlier? She should have gotten to know him better.
To Chen Peiling's eyes, Ye Chenfeng was just a delicate young man—the type she liked.
Feeling extremely frustrated, Ye Chenfeng returned to his empty dorm room with the heavy book in his arms.
The room was deserted until now; it only felt alive with his presence.
Classes officially started tomorrow; he needed to sort this out today. Leaning against the edge of his bed and reading by the light streaming through the open window, he became engrossed in his book when suddenly his phone rang. He picked it up and saw that it was Ding Li calling.
Ding Li picked up the phone and began to talk non-stop about everything that had happened at Vocational University.
Ye Chenfeng patiently listened to her recounting, and then Ding Li asked, "Are there many beautiful girls at your school?"
"Not bad," he replied.
"How about tonight? Let's go out for barbecue?"
"I can't." Ye Chenfeng needed to study and quickly understand more about the situation at Four Hospitals.
"Why not?" Ding Li questioned with a hint of emotion in her voice.
"I have something to do."
In Ding Li's impression, Ye Chenfeng was usually talkative, so she was puzzled by his current brevity—either one or two words. What was going on with him? Had he found someone more attractive at school?
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and in a fit of frustration, she hung up the phone.
Ye Chenfeng was relieved that she had hung up; it allowed him to return to his studies without further explanation. He picked up his book and continued reading.
There was a rumor circulating at Vocational University related to the cause of Ding Li's mother's death.
Feeling down, Ding Li recalled this rumor. Meanwhile, Ye Chenfeng remained oblivious, focused on figuring out the matters concerning Four Hospitals before planning to meet her for barbecue, unaware that danger was already lurking between him and Ding Li.
