Ye Chenfeng, Qin Keqing, and Chen Peiling quickly arrived at Zhou Zhisheng's office without wasting much time.
To their surprise, the office was unlocked and opened with a gentle push.
Moreover, it seemed empty inside, desolate and cold, with a chilling breeze flowing through.
Qin Keqing felt an intense cold that penetrated to the bone, almost freezing his blood. The chill made him want to jump up. Goosebumps formed on his skin as he cupped his hands around his mouth and exhaled, seeing the mist. He was astonished, "What's going on? It shouldn't be this cold right now!"
Ye Chenfeng and Chen Peiling remained silent, both instinctively looking toward the largest file cabinet in the office, which was most likely to conceal someone.
Perhaps Zhou Zhisheng was hiding in there, waiting for them to rescue him.
Ye Chenfeng quickly walked toward the cabinet, but before he could push it open, he heard footsteps coming from the entrance. Startled, he turned around alertly. A tall man, about six feet tall with dark skin and a long face, approached. "Ye Chenfeng, when did you get here?" The man spoke with a thick northeastern accent; Ye Chenfeng confirmed that it was indeed Zhou Zhisheng.
"Director Zhou, I'm sorry for not being able to reach you by phone, so I came to check in person," Ye Chenfeng said as he gestured for Qin Keqing to take a seat.
Zhou Zhisheng nodded in acknowledgment but then looked at Chen Peiling with surprise. "Who is this young lady?"
"My classmate," Ye Chenfeng quickly introduced her before inquiring about the recent situation at the hospital.
Chen Peiling discreetly stood aside and quietly stepped out.
Zhou Zhisheng smiled wryly. "A strange incident occurred a couple of days ago; I'll take you to see it shortly." Then he shifted the conversation back to Ye Chenfeng, asking how they had entered. It seemed he was unaware of their visit and that no one had informed him; besides, the front door appeared not to have been opened.
It seemed that coming through the secret passage would not be hidden from Zhou Zhisheng.
Just as Ye Chenfeng was about to explain, he reconsidered. Zhou Zhisheng was the director; he should know about that passage meant for emergency escapes. If he didn’t know and Ye Chenfeng revealed it now, wouldn’t that cause trouble?
Thinking of this, Ye Chenfeng chuckled lightly and said, "I climbed over the wall to get in."
Zhou Zhisheng laughed heartily and said, "I suspected you all came in by climbing over the wall; otherwise, how else could you have gotten in?" As he spoke, he stood up to fetch tea cups, one for each person. It was only when he was placing the cups down that he realized Chen Peiling was missing.
"Little girl, don't run off," Zhou Zhisheng instructed Ye Chenfeng and Qin Keqing to stay inside while he personally went to find her. He was worried that if a patient got up and encountered her, it would cause trouble.
Chen Peiling quite liked this body; it allowed her to experience the reality of being human once again. If only Ye Feng could also obtain such a body, they could be together. Unfortunately, he listened too much to Ye Chenfeng, who said he needed to do good deeds and accumulate merit in order to reincarnate as a human alongside her.
In fact, Chen Peiling was more familiar with the Four Hospitals than Ye Chenfeng and the others. She knew every corridor and every door here; aside from the recently renovated ones, she was clear about all the rest. Ahead was the restroom, where she had once carved her name on the third door.
Chen Peiling wanted to see if her name was still there.
She walked into the restroom—first door, second door, third door—when she reached the third door. As it opened, a crisis emerged; countless ghostly hands reached out from within, grabbing her and tearing at her forcefully.
Out of instinct, she screamed as her clothes ripped apart inch by inch. With no fabric to cover her, her body was exposed, and a gigantic ghostly hand came swirling toward her—
"Ah..."
Ye Chenfeng and Qin Keqing both heard that scream.
They jumped up and ran toward the source of the sound.
As they rushed out, they encountered Zhou Zhisheng returning, with Chen Peiling following closely behind him.
Ye Chenfeng exchanged glances with Qin Keqing and asked, "Who just screamed?"
Zhou Zhisheng paused slightly, looking directly at Ye Chenfeng but asking Chen Peiling instead, "Did you hear anything?"
Behind him, Chen Peiling replied, "I didn't hear anything."
Zhou Zhisheng stared at himself—his vigilance was strong. Why was he so wary of me? Ye Chenfeng fell silent and followed behind as they entered the room.
Qin Keqing dared not speak up.
Ever since he entered this place, he felt an overwhelming sense of oppression.
Chen Peiling unexpectedly walked behind Zhou Zhisheng, her hands resting on her abdomen, a gesture that startled Ye Chenfeng.
Ye Chenfeng shot a glance at Qin Keqing, who was confused.
Zhou Zhisheng began recounting recent events that had occurred in the hospital—first, a German Shepherd had been killed by a patient. Then one night, someone dug up the buried dog and roasted it to eat.
At first, no one knew who had done such a thing.
Until the next day, when a person was found dead.
The sight of the deceased was horrifying.
His mouth was filled with dog meat, with bits stuck between his teeth, and it seemed as if he had reached into his own esophagus to pull it out. When he died, one of his hands was still lodged in his throat—
Thus, everyone in the hospital speculated that the dog had been eaten by this person.
This story truly frightened Qin Keqing. He listened with his hair standing on end, feeling a chill run down his spine.
Ye Chenfeng, however, kept staring at Chen Peiling.
Chen Peiling wore a cold expression, her face devoid of emotion. Anyone who had seen films from the Island Nation would recognize that she looked just like a female ninja from those movies.
“Chen Peiling.”
Chen Peiling glanced down at Ye Chenfeng and replied softly, “Yes.”
"You're... not Chen Peiling, who are you?"
Ye Chenfeng asked, and Zhou Zhisheng's expression changed slightly before he quickly regained his composure and said, "Isn't she your classmate?"
Qin Keqing, not sensing any issue, was puzzled by Ye Chenfeng's seemingly foolish question.
"Maybe," Ye Chenfeng replied, then turned to Zhou Zhisheng and said, "I need to go to the restroom."
"Sure, go ahead. Just turn right and walk straight out," Zhou Zhisheng said as Ye Chenfeng reached the door, glaring fiercely at Chen Peiling.
Chen Peiling hurriedly put her hands down and walked behind Ye Chenfeng, saying, "I'll take you there."
"No need, Qin Keqing can come with me," Ye Chenfeng replied.
Qin Keqing didn't understand why Ye Chenfeng wanted her to accompany him to the restroom and waved her hand, saying, "I won't go. Just hurry back."
Ye Chenfeng shook his head. With Zhou Zhisheng and Chen Peiling present, he couldn't be too direct. He had to make a quick trip to the restroom; originally, he intended to use the excuse to tell Qin Keqing that something was off here, but the dim-witted Qin Keqing completely ignored him.
Ye Chenfeng ran to the restroom.
He turned back without actually going in. When he returned, he found that Zhou Zhisheng's office was nowhere to be seen.
...
After Ye Chenfeng left, Zhou Zhisheng mentioned he had something to attend to and stepped out.
In the office remained Chen Peiling and Qin Keqing.
Qin Keqing knew that Chen Peiling was not human; she felt only awe towards her and dared not offend her.
Chen Peiling smiled at him and said, "There are many fun places here. Would you like to go play for a bit?"
"Maybe not. Let's wait until Ye Chenfeng comes back," Qin Keqing thought. There was nothing unusual about the Four Hospitals; they should be back soon. He decided to return to school and simply wait for Ye Chenfeng.
However, Chen Peiling insisted on taking him to a fun place.
To Qin Keqing, this place felt like a Mental Hospital.
A Mental Hospital was filled with crazy people; how could there be anything fun?
"Come on, are you afraid I'll eat you?"
Qin Keqing replied, "Honestly, if you weren't that way, I might really like you."
Chen Peiling pretended not to understand, blinking at him with a furrowed brow, and sweetly said, "Why can't you like me?" This statement startled Qin Keqing. He glanced suspiciously at Chen Peiling and slowly reached for his pocket.
Inside the pocket was the talisman Ye Chenfeng had given him.
Qin Keqing felt that something was off about Chen Peiling. She clearly knew he was a ghost; how could she still act so flirtatiously towards him?
"Hey, I think I'll go check if Ye Chenfeng is back."
He chuckled awkwardly as he walked toward the door. Seeing Chen Peiling get up, he hurriedly dashed outside while shouting, "Ye Chenfeng, where the hell did you go?" As he ran, he began to feel that something was wrong. This place was definitely not a Mental Hospital; it resembled—he couldn't quite find the right words to describe what he was seeing.
Women dressed in flamboyant outfits were wearing high-slit qipaos that revealed their long, fair legs.
Was this a movie set? Or some kind of exhibition? Qin Keqing was confused; the scene he had seen when he entered the office was completely different from what he saw now. These women had blood-red lipstick and nails, as if they had just feasted on human flesh.
"Hey handsome, come join us for a spin." Someone finally noticed the exceptionally handsome guy in the crowd, and instantly, women swarmed around him like bees to honey. They surrounded him in all shapes and sizes.
Qin Keqing was in a state of panic. In her fright, she yanked out her talisman, tearing it in half with a loud rip. Women continued to swarm around her, their voices sweet and teasing, calling out "darling" and "brother" in a cacophony that left her dizzy and disoriented. A thought flashed through her mind: these people were either ghosts or there really was a film crew shooting a movie.
Just as Qin Keqing was at a loss, a loud shout rang out, followed by a flash of golden light—Ye Chenfeng appeared. Chanting an incantation, he used the Ghost-Collecting Gourd to swiftly capture the female ghosts that were trying to escape. Suddenly, a cold hand grabbed Qin Keqing, pulling her inward.
"Ye Chenfeng, save me!"
Ye Chenfeng stood firm on the Bagua stance, casting spells and unleashing talismans. However, he was overwhelmed and unable to save Qin Keqing; he watched helplessly as she was dragged away by the ghostly hand. The situation escalated rapidly as more and more ghosts appeared in various forms.
In that moment, Ye Chenfeng understood why Shen Binghan had sent him to find the Deep Mountain Old Monk. With his current abilities, he was utterly incapable of dealing with these Evil Spirits.
Chen Peiling appeared, her icy expression revealing a sinister smile. "Ye Chenfeng, submit to us, and you will not be wronged."
Ye Chenfeng gritted his teeth and cursed, "Damn it! You Island Nation bitch, give me back Chen Peiling!" He feigned an attack and directed the Ghost-Collecting Gourd towards her.
"Ah..." The fake Chen Peiling shrieked in surprise as Zhou Zhisheng emerged. He sneered and swung a gleaming katana at Ye Chenfeng. A chilling arc of light rushed toward him, filled with murderous intent. He quickly dodged but failed to capture Chen Peiling; however, the talisman he held firmly adhered to the fake.
The false Chen Peiling screamed as she fell to the ground, a wisp of black mist separating from her body.
Seizing the opportunity while Zhou Zhisheng turned to swing his blade again, Ye Chenfeng shook the Ghost-Collecting Gourd and chanted an incantation—he absorbed the black mist into it. The real Chen Peiling, curled up on the ground, struggled to rise after some time. In pain, she looked at Ye Chenfeng and said, "Outnumbered as we are, you should leave quickly and find help..." Then she convulsed and collapsed, disappearing into thin air moments later.
Ye Chenfeng realized that Chen Peiling had been drained of her spirit energy by the Evil Spirit, leaving her soul shattered.
