Luo Daoming suddenly opened his eyes wide, a strange look in them as he stared at Lao Ran and said in a haunting tone, "How did I end up here? I was sleeping!"
Lao Ran grinned and replied, "So you were sleepwalking, huh?"
Luo Daoming shook his slightly dazed head, puzzled. "I never sleepwalk. What on earth is going on?" He rubbed his face randomly and looked around, feeling quite confused.
"You can't possibly not know what you're doing, right?" Lao Ran sensed that Luo Daoming wasn't lying and quickly reminded him. In the dim red light surrounding them, combined with the late hour, Luo Daoming's behavior felt so bizarre that it sent a chill down Lao Ran's spine.
"I really don't know. Damn it, ever since those two dead guys died, I've felt something was off." The two dead guys he mentioned were the security guards who had come to patrol in the middle of the night and later died in the elevator. At this point, Lao Ran felt a shiver run through him, a deeper chill creeping in.
"Don't mention them right now; it's late. It's bad luck to talk about ghosts at night," he said as they exited the elevator.
"Damn it, what's this ghost nonsense? I don't believe in that crap." Luo Daoming continued talking as he hurried to the door, not even checking if anyone was around before standing next to the Stone Lion to relieve himself.
"Looks like you're a dog at heart! No sense of public decency," Lao Ran immediately stopped him. Inside, he cursed, thinking: Damn it, this guy is just a reincarnated beast; he's ruining all decorum.
"What's it to you? I'm just taking a piss; mind your own business! You had such a huge problem during your last interview that you might lose your job. What are you so proud of?" Luo Daoming flashed a toothy grin as he cursed his way toward the Guard Room.
Lao Ran looked at the large puddle of urine beneath the Stone Lion, an unbearable stench wafting up. Great, Luo Daoming must have connections to get in here; Lao Ran didn't dare provoke him and could only swallow his anger.
……………………………………
Lao Ran returned home feeling speechless all night. The next day he rushed to tell Liu about it. Finally, Liu understood where that sticky liquid at the foot of the Stone Lion came from and the source of the pungent urine smell.
Liu found Duan Xiuying, who worked with her on cleaning duties. "Xiuying, didn't you say something about what's at the foot of that Stone Lion? I found out something." When they reached the break room on the 13th floor, Liu got straight to the point. The whole News Agency knew about Duan Xiuying's unclear relationship with the security guard at the entrance. Perhaps that night they really were up to something inappropriate; thinking of this made Liu feel even more scandalized by their behavior.
"What is it?" Duan Xiuying rolled up her sleeves and rubbed some soap on her hands, gently rubbing her fingers together.
"It’s a wild dog, a wild dog that urinates there every night," Liu said, suppressing the urge to burst into laughter and maintaining a serious demeanor.
"A wild dog? No way!"
"I assure you, it’s definitely a wild dog on two legs..." Liu continued in the same tone, appearing quite earnest.
"Just say what you want to say! I'm busy!" Duan Xiuying seemed to sense something unusual about Liu's demeanor; her blinking eyes betrayed her intentions. It was clear she was trying to hint at something while teasingly withholding information.
"Forget it, I won’t joke with you anymore. I have things to do," Liu teased Duan Xiuying's curiosity but abruptly stopped, which only made her more displeased.
"Hey! Liu, are you just messing with me?" Duan Xiuying had a fiery temper; those who knew her at the News Agency wouldn’t dare joke around with her.
"Come on, it was just a joke! Why are you getting so worked up?" Liu's arm was grabbed by Duan Xiuying, insisting that she reveal what she meant.
"You know nothing! What are you trying to express, you old hag? Go back to your hometown!" Unexpectedly, Duan Xiuying erupted in anger, as if possessed, which also infuriated Liu.
"What are you even saying? How dare you insult me? Aren't you just flirting with a security guard? What’s there to be proud of?" Liu finally lost her patience and exposed Duan Xiuying’s scandalous secret that she thought no one knew.
Liu's words pushed Duan Xiuying into a frenzy. Everyone has their limits, and once those limits are crossed, they might resort to extreme actions. In that moment, Duan Xiuying violently grabbed Liu's hair and slammed her head against the wall. At that moment, Lao Ran happened to walk out of the data room on the 13th floor and immediately noticed Duan Xiuying's actions.
"Let her go, you shrew..." To everyone's surprise, the usually timid man boldly confronted her. The fierce Duan Xiuying stepped forward and pulled at Lao Ran's arm. With her other hand, she yanked his ear painfully, causing Lao Ran to tear up from the pain.
"You crazy woman, let go of me." Liu struggled fiercely to break free from Duan Xiuying's grip and pulled her hand away from Lao Ran.
The three of them became entangled in the hallway. Duan Xiuying was surprisingly strong; she seemed like a different person altogether. Roaring with rage, saliva flew from her mouth as she scratched Lao Ran’s face deeply enough to draw blood, making Liu feel guilty. Finally managing to escape Duan Xiuying’s grasp, they hurriedly ran into the elevator, panting heavily.
"Cough, cough... Lao Ran... do you think... she's normal?" Liu pondered more and more, wondering how Duan Xiuying could possibly have such strength!
"How did you provoke her?" Lao Ran shivered as he tried to wipe the pain from his face, feeling a bit scared about his reckless actions earlier. He silently cursed his bad luck for the day. Just when things were going well, he ended up in a fight and got hurt.
"Isn't it just because you told me that Luo Daoming was outside by the Stone Lion, urinating?" Liu replied with a slightly apologetic tone.
"Sigh! Liu, you're too nosy. You heard something and immediately caused trouble. Who knows how she might tell Luo Daoming to come deal with us," Lao Ran scolded, his tone mixed with a hint of fear.
After work, Lao Ran hurried home, stopping to buy a skewer of barbecue for his daughter. As soon as he entered the door and handed the barbecue to her, his wife noticed the bruises on his face. "What happened to your face?" she asked while serving rice on the table.
"Oh, I... accidentally bumped into a pillar," Lao Ran thought it was better to keep things simple and hide the truth. This woman from the countryside was crazy, had little experience, and was particularly stubborn. He knew his wife well; she could be quite fierce, especially during menopause, and had been nagging him non-stop lately.
"Hmph! You were charmed by that vixen from the News Agency. Look at you, clearly caught by someone but still trying to cover it up. If you think I'm just an old hag, then don't come home!"
Lao Ran, who had been suppressing his feelings, didn't know if it was the scratch from Duan Xiuying that triggered his pent-up resentment. At that moment, amidst his wife's relentless and unreasonable accusations, he swung his fist at her.
"You dare hit me? Is it just because I exposed your dirty little secrets? Go ahead and hit me! Just kill me! I'm tired of living anyway!" His wife's cries echoed through the house, drawing another round of scolding from his elderly mother who had hearing problems.
"What are you so proud of? You're just an editor and you go after women?" Looking at his daughter who was quietly crying, Lao Ran felt a surge of anger but held it back. He had no choice but to flee in despair. He set up a folding bed in his office, never expecting that this time away from home would directly lead to the collapse of his relationship with his wife.
