As Ziya stepped out of the detention center, she headed straight to the News Agency to report the situation. Along the way, she recalled Li Mingxiang's words, feeling a mix of emotions. The plant incident seemed to be just like that, yet there was still a lingering question in her mind that she couldn't shake off.
That experience in the elevator truly felt like being controlled by an unknown force. Could it have been an illusion? Upon arriving at the building's entrance, she was greeted by a bustling scene in the courtyard. The wooden boards on the 14th floor were nearly all removed, and workers were loading potted plants onto a large truck. Yuan Ye waved when he spotted Ziya.
"Ziya, how did it go?"
"Uh... not bad? Has Liu arrived?" Ziya thought about the text message incident that still puzzled her, feeling a twinge of unease.
"Yeah, we just finished a meeting where the adjustment list was announced. She’s gone somewhere; do you need her for something?" Yuan Ye said as he walked ahead and opened the office door.
"This is the recorded material; I've already made a copy for the Public Security Bureau. Now I'm handing this over to you," Ziya said, passing her mini recorder to Yuan Ye.
"Alright, sit down. I have some good news for you," Yuan Ye replied casually as he settled into the boss's chair, gesturing for Ziya to take a seat in a leather chair across from him.
Sitting upright and attentively, Ziya blinked at him, waiting for the good news.
"You've completed your internship and are officially becoming an employee of our News Agency, along with a promotion to Assistant Editor." Yuan Ye had initially intended to mention that he would keep the office director position open for her, but knowing her current experience and work background weren't sufficient for such responsibility—and that another colleague would strongly oppose it—he held back.
"Thank you, Yuan... uh... Uncle," Ziya stammered, sticking out her tongue and lowering her head, her face turning bright red with embarrassment.
"Hahaha! Go on now! Get back to your work. Your friend is waiting for you in your office!" Yuan Ye laughed heartily before addressing Ziya.
Ziya was taken aback; it turned out Sun Meng had already come to the News Agency. How could she have known that she had already gone to Aunt Li's place? Feeling shy, she nodded at Yuan Ye and hurriedly opened the office door to head to her workspace.
"Ziya," a soft call made her turn around; it was Liu. At that moment, Liu looked disheveled and worn out, completely lacking her usual vibrant demeanor.
“Aunt Liu, hello. Is there something you need?” Ziya paused and asked as she watched Liu walk down the corridor.
“Uh... can I take a moment of your time?”
“Sure, no problem,” Ziya replied with an understanding smile. She thought of Sun Meng waiting for her in the office and couldn’t bear to refuse the hopeful look in Liu's eyes.
“Great!” Liu smiled brightly and quickly led Ziya toward the elevator.
Ziya picked up her phone and sent a text to Sun Meng: ‘Hey, can you wait a few minutes for me?’
A few seconds later, Sun Meng replied: ‘No problem! I’m learning how to clean with Aunt Chen. Just give me a call when you’re done.’
Ziya immediately responded: ‘Ok,’ and closed her flip phone with a satisfying ‘ding.’
“Now that the new iPhone is out, have you thought about getting a new phone?” Liu asked casually, feigning indifference.
“Hehe, I have a sentimental attachment to this phone. It was a gift from a friend…” Ziya thought of Zhou Chen and the moment he gave her the phone, a fleeting glimmer of emotion sparkled in her eyes.
“Was it from your boyfriend? Hmm! That’s worth remembering.” The elevator lights flickered in orange hues as the numbers displayed 14, 15, 16. Ziya felt puzzled as they reached the 16th floor.
“Aunt Liu, why did you bring me to the 16th floor?” As the elevator doors opened, a sudden cold breeze rushed in, making Ziya shiver.
“To enjoy the view of the building below. Don’t you like it?” Liu's voice was chilling, her expression complex as she fixed an unsettling gaze on Ziya.
Ziya looked at the sudden change in the other person's face, her heart jolting with fear, tightening painfully, and a chill ran down her spine. "Aunt Liu, there's nothing to see here. Let's go downstairs!" As she spoke, she hurriedly reached for the elevator button to descend.
"You little brat, it's too late to go down now." Liu said fiercely, twisting Ziya's arm and pulling her onto the platform on the 16th floor.
"Let go of me! What do you want?" Ziya shouted loudly, but her cries were swallowed by the cold wind on the platform. All that followed was a weak struggle and a scuffle.
Liu took out her phone and dialed Yuan Ye's number. "Yuan, haha! Can't I call you if there's nothing going on? Look who’s beside me." She aimed the camera at Ziya and took a picture.
Yuan Ye was taken aback. Ziya had been taken hostage by the former office director on the 16th floor. He quickly called the police while also notifying Anqing and Liu Haoming.
In no time, chaos erupted below the building as people rushed to the inner courtyard on the first floor to catch a glimpse of the two small figures on the 16th floor. Liu calmly held her phone, facing the wind as she shouted, "Hahaha! I'm done for, but I won't let you all off easy either. If I die, I’ll take someone down with me!" She laughed and cried as she pulled Ziya closer to the edge of the building, looking down at the tiny figures below who were staring up in terror. She spat on the ground and said, "You all have a day when I look down on you too. I've lost my home, my career, my friends—I've got nothing left."
"Aunt Liu, you still have us! This isn't right; do you understand? We can help you with anything," Ziya pleaded, twisting her arm in an attempt to reason with her.
"Shut up, you little brat! If it weren't for your dad holding some meeting today, I wouldn't be in despair and wouldn’t be dragging you down with me. Blame your father!"
Below the building, there was a flurry of activity as police and special forces arrived. They were laying out air cushions for rescue while looking up at the towering floors. The chances of survival for anyone falling from that height were nearly zero. As various units quietly entered the building, Anqing and Liu Haoming stood frozen, gazing at their daughter's frail figure and wondering how she could withstand death's test time and again.
Time ticked by slowly as Yuan Ye shouted at Liu, demanding to know what conditions she wanted in exchange for releasing Ziya. One side aimed to buy time for those below to enter methodically while preparing to take action against her from a visible position. However, Liu's response only heightened everyone's anxiety further.
