Zhiqing wore a mysterious expression that completely captured the curiosity of Ziya and Sun Meng. "Come on, what’s the secret?" Ziya asked anxiously, looking at her.
"Cough, cough, my mom is into... fortune-telling," Zhiqing finally stammered out after a long pause, her neck turning red.
"Fortune-telling? Isn’t that just some kind of superstition?" Ziya raised her eyebrows in surprise, her eyes wide.
"Is... is your mom serious about that?" Sun Meng stared at Zhiqing in disbelief.
"Cough, let’s find a way to get out of here! Aren't you two hungry?" Zhiqing quickly changed the subject, noticing that there seemed to be no movement outside. She walked over to the window and pulled it open, intending to jump out.
"Hey! What are we supposed to do if you jump out?" Ziya said awkwardly to Zhiqing.
The windowsill was at least a meter high! It was easy for a boy to climb over, but it would be a bit challenging for the two girls. Realizing this, Zhiqing hesitated and decided she needed to help Ziya and Sun Meng out first.
The three of them moved a bench close to the window. Ziya stepped onto the bench and strained to lift her leg over the window, jumping up with all her might. Zhiqing wanted to give her a little boost but was afraid of being accused of taking advantage of her. Caught in this dilemma, she hesitated to help.
Just as Zhiqing was thinking this, Sun Meng took matters into her own hands. With surprising strength, she lifted Ziya's backside and pushed her up. At that moment, Ziya was stuck in the window frame, the glass rattling as she struggled to steady herself before jumping outside. Just as she prepared to leap down, a scream echoed from outside...
"What happened? Did someone fall?" Zhiqing asked, puzzled but feeling something was off; that scream didn’t belong to Ziya.
Outside, Ziya's furious voice rang out as she shouted, "What’s wrong with you? Trying to scare someone to death? You deserved it!" Known for her quiet demeanor, if Ziya was this angry, it meant she was truly livid.
"Is something going on?" Sun Meng leaned out to look outside but could only see shadows in the darkness. She quickly turned to Zhiqing behind her and said, "There's someone else out there."
"Who is it?"
"I can't see clearly; we'll find out when we go outside."
Sun Meng and Zhi Qing were both speculating about what was happening outside. Sun Meng lifted her legs to cling to the window frame; she wasn't as slender as Ziya, and her body resembled her Doll Face—round and plump. She found herself suspended in mid-air, unable to go up or down. Zhi Qing, feeling helpless and anxious, didn’t know how to assist her. "Can you give me a boost?" she pleaded.
Well, since Sun Meng voluntarily asked for help, Zhi Qing couldn’t feel guilty. She reached out and pushed against the ample area, successfully helping Sun Meng stand on the window frame. However, someone was suddenly filled with excitement, their face flushed.
Sun Meng bent down to steady herself against the swaying window but saw Ziya and that other person walking toward the door. The classroom door swung open...
"Hey! Why didn't you open it sooner? I was stuck up here!" Sun Meng exclaimed, feeling dizzy from her fear of heights.
Zhi Qing watched as their classmate Wang Yuan and Ziya entered the classroom. At that moment, he dared not look up and kept his head down like a child caught misbehaving. He wanted to laugh but held it back, pretending to be calm as he asked, "Wang Yuan, what are you up to?"
"Ziya, help me!" Sun Meng shouted, waving her hands. Ziya ignored Wang Yuan and Zhi Qing and hurried over to help Sun Meng down.
Seeing Ziya rush to assist Sun Meng, Wang Yuan quickly winked at Zhi Qing as if to say, "Boss, the hero saving the beauty plan has failed." When the two approached him, he immediately put on a dejected expression.
"Why did you scare us?" Ziya glared at Wang Yuan in annoyance. Just moments ago, this guy had startled her by jumping down right in front of her; under her relentless questioning, he had confessed that he intended to frighten both her and Sun Meng.
"Exactly! You should confess honestly," Zhi Qing chimed in. He thought to himself: Buddy, you got through this time; tomorrow we'll give you all our game tokens.
"What are you guys talking about?" Sun Meng looked confusedly at Wang Yuan and then at Zhi Qing and Ziya.
"Ask him! We were cleaning, and he deliberately came to scare us," Ziya said as she pulled Sun Meng toward the door. Sun Meng began to understand but still felt puzzled; earlier by the sink, the wind had blown her bangs up—there was no way a person could do that. Could it be that Wang Yuan had some other trick? She glanced back at Zhi Qing and Wang Yuan before being tugged along by Ziya toward the dormitory.
"Wait! Fellow humanities student, I've already confessed! Please let this slide just this once; I promise I won't do it again," Wang Yuan said hurriedly as he jumped in front of them with a sheepish grin.
"Hmph! You really are infamous for your thick skin. This time I'll let you off easy, but next time you won't be so lucky. Keep playing ghost... one day you'll encounter a real ghost," Ziya scolded loudly in frustration.
"Let's go!" Sun Meng usually valued Wang Yuan, but at this moment, he couldn't speak up for him. The only thing he could do was urge Ziya to leave.
Watching the two girls' figures disappear at the end of the distant corridor, the two boys laughed so hard that they could barely stand straight. Wang Yuan took a plastic hand from his waistband and handed it to Zhiqing, saying, "This thing is quite useful; it might scare the beauties into your arms!"
"Pfft, I'm not as sleazy as you. I need to pursue her openly and confidently; just watch," Zhiqing replied, lifting his nostrils with confidence.
"Alright, Buddy, I didn't expose you today! You actually played the peacemaker," Wang Yuan said proudly.
Zhiqing gave Wang Yuan a thumbs-up in gratitude. Then he thought about going home; his house wasn't far from school, while Wang Yuan was heading in the opposite direction. They both smiled secretly and shook hands to say goodbye. "See you tomorrow," Zhiqing said before striding into the dim light of the streetlamp.
Zhiqing had harbored a crush on Ziya for a long time but felt too shy to confess. Moreover, there was a clear rule from teachers forbidding middle school students from dating. The shadow of a previous incident involving a student suicide due to early romance still lingered, and teachers had no choice but to take this as a warning.
Wang Yuan was Zhiqing's close buddy, always ready to help. Before school ended, Zhiqing mentioned wanting to help two classmates clean up. Wang Yuan secretly decided to assist Zhiqing but almost ended up causing more trouble instead.
After returning home, Sun Meng and Ziya went back to their dormitory, freshened up, and then headed out to buy some bento for dinner. It's worth mentioning the school's layout: the seventh-grade dormitories are located at the innermost part of the school, the second-year dormitories are in the middle, and the ninth-grade dormitories are right at the entrance in a row of buildings.
Why is it laid out this way? The school had meticulously planned it. Seventh graders are new and curious about everything; keeping them inside is safer for both parents and children. By second year, students are already familiar with the school's rules and have matured somewhat. The ninth graders being at the entrance signifies that they are facing the culmination of their three years in middle school and preparing for high school entrance exams. This invisible pressure compels them to strive harder...
The school felt narrow and crowded; if it weren't for the newly built New Playground, there would be no place for morning exercises. Unfortunately, Huangguoshu trees couldn't be destroyed as they were one of the protected species in the country. Protection aside, natural disasters are unpredictable. Later on, Huangguoshu experienced a catastrophic event that unraveled mysteries passed down for hundreds of years; subsequently, the school also fell apart—of course, that's another story...
