Zhiqing's furrowed brow remained locked in worry as he listened to Ziya and Sun Meng's conversation, his mind racing with thoughts of where Wang Yuan might have gone.
"Let's go check out the internet cafes and game halls on the street," Ziya suggested decisively.
"Yeah, we still have eight minutes before class starts. Let's go find him," Zhiqing agreed.
The trio naturally formed a search party, visiting every place where Wang Yuan might be. Each time they entered with hope, only to leave filled with disappointment.
"Class monitor, should we notify his family? Searching like this isn't working. If he's deliberately hiding from us, there's no way we'll find him even if we turn this place upside down," Sun Meng complained, his calves aching from all the walking.
"Ziya, do you have any good suggestions?" Zhiqing ignored Sun Meng's emotional outburst and turned his gaze to Ziya, who was still scanning the area.
"You could call Wang Yuan and ask him what's going on. If he doesn't answer or if his phone is off, we should let the teacher know so they can contact his parents."
"I told you I called him last night. The call went through, but no one answered. I thought maybe he was asleep and didn't hear the phone ring, so I didn't think much of it. Just now at school, I tried calling twice more, but it went unanswered."
"What should we do? What should we do!" Sun Meng muttered anxiously, stamping his feet in frustration.
"Let's head back! Class is about to start," Ziya said as she pulled out her phone and asked Zhiqing for Wang Yuan's number. She wanted to try calling him again.
The phone rang, followed by a series of beeps indicating that the call was not answered. Ziya shook her head at Zhiqing and Sun Meng, expressing her helplessness.
The afternoon classes dragged on painfully, with each teacher asking the same questions. Zhiqing felt overwhelmed; not only was his head spinning, but his tongue felt tied as he could only respond to the teachers' inquiries by shaking his head.
The three of them refused to give up and continued checking all their usual hangouts around campus, even searching the woods behind the school.
"Sun Meng, are you lying? Where did you see him?" Zhiqing vented his frustration onto Sun Meng.
"I... lying? Are you mistaken? I'm not the one who lies; you should investigate who among the Suns is telling tales," Sun Meng retorted angrily, his face flushed with indignation.
"Alright, can you both just calm down? We don't even know whose fault it is that he's missing. Sun Meng said he saw Wang Yuan; I was there too when he disappeared," Ziya interjected. She wasn't defending Sun Meng; she just felt that they needed to stay focused and work together instead of falling apart in confusion.
"Yeah! Let's calm down and talk later," Sun Meng said, realizing that she had been a bit too heated earlier, her tone softening considerably.
As they spoke, dusk fell, the sky painted with the blood-red hues of the setting sun hanging in the west, while night birds returned to their nests. A few flying birds shrank in their view until they finally became mere specks disappearing into the clouds of the night.
"I'm so tired; let's head back to the dorm! Maybe Wang Yuan will show up tomorrow," Zhiqing suggested.
"Sure, let's go!" Ziya replied, bending down to brush off the dirt from his pants before responding to Sun Meng.
"Yeah, we should hurry back. Lately, my parents have been checking on my after-school schedule. Honestly, I don't know what's going on; their questions are just annoying," Zhiqing said gloomily.
"Uh... we're in our rebellious phase; parents are always right, right? Let's go and see each other tomorrow," Ziya reassured.
"Bye!" Zhiqing waved goodbye, tugging at her backpack straps as she headed home. To mask her unease, she turned back to glance at Ziya and Sun Meng's figures and let out a whistle.
"Ziya, do you think something happened to Wang Yuan?"
"How could that be? You saw him this morning; stop overthinking," Ziya comforted Sun Meng, though her heart raced with worry about what that nightmare from the morning might mean.
"I... really did see him!" Sun Meng plopped down on the edge of her bed, supporting herself with her hands and feeling a bit wronged.
"Seeing or not seeing isn't important; what matters is we need to find him quickly. I'm frustrated that you saw him this morning, and now he's just gone," Ziya said, struggling to understand.
"I just want to take a nap. Ugh! I don't want to think about anything; I just want to have a beautiful dream..." Sun Meng lay back on her bed, holding a magazine and mumbling to herself.
"If there's a handsome guy in that dream, it would be even more perfect, right? Come on, let's go for a walk around campus," Ziya urged as she stood up and pulled at the lounging Sun Meng.
"No way! The campus is deserted except for the third-year students in class; it feels like a ghost town. It's too creepy for me to go," Sun Meng deliberately rolled over toward her bed, trying to avoid being pulled by Ziya.
"Hmph! If you don't go, don't regret it. I'm definitely going; what if I run into a handsome guy or something..." Ziya teased as she crossed her arms defiantly.
"I really don't want to go. We've walked so much today; I'm just too tired. Please accompany me tomorrow instead," Sun Meng pleaded as she sat up with a look of desperation on her face.
"Alright then! You sleep, and I'll go out," Ziya said, clearly displeased.
"Ziya, let's go home! Today is Sunday, and we can stay at home until Monday comes. How about that?"
"I was afraid you wouldn't be happy going home, so I deliberately didn't mention it. How can I say anything to you like this? Fine, you rest while I go out for a bit," Ziya said before quickly stepping out of the dormitory.
"Hey! Wait for me!" Sun Meng shouted anxiously as she rolled out of bed and hurried after Ziya.
The two of them walked towards the front yard of the school, and a right turn down a small path led to the direction of Yellow Crane Tower. Sun Meng glanced nervously and caught a glimpse of a familiar figure disappearing into the bushes.
"Wang Yuan..."
"Where?" Ziya suddenly asked when she heard Sun Meng calling out, her tone urgent.
"She went towards Pomelo Grove," Sun Meng hesitated, pointing in the direction of Pomelo Grove.
"Let's go take a look," Ziya said as she moved to check it out.
"Don't... I'm scared," Sun Meng replied, fear flashing in her eyes as she refused to go investigate.
