Hearing the footsteps coming down the stairs, Ziya and Sun Meng felt their hearts racing in their throats.
“Captain, this is a straight run down the stairs, and the space below is quite large. Slow down back there! This is a straight run; someone could fall,” a mature man's voice called out.
As soon as Ziya heard that voice, she knew it had to be the people coming to rescue them. However, to be safe, she decided to wait and see, remaining pressed against the wall by the staircase. She placed her hands on the wall and turned her head to peek at the direction of the approaching footsteps.
A few people came down with the beam of a flashlight, and Zhiqing was among them. The flashlight illuminated Ziya and Sun Meng curled up in the corner, and they looked at each other in surprise.
“Zhiqing…” Ziya felt as if she had seen a family member; tears instantly welled up in her eyes, and her breathing became heavy.
“Ziya, Sun Meng, you…” Zhiqing sniffed, joyfully looking at them along with the sharp gaze of the Investigator who had come with her.
The woman leading the group had a face ashen as death, hanging her head without saying a word.
“There must be something else here besides food! It stinks…” the Investigator wrinkled his nose and couldn’t help but cover his mouth with his hand.
“Well, there’s a jar; I don’t know what’s inside it,” Zhiya's Mom said hurriedly as she noticed Ziya and Sun Meng trembling uncontrollably. She quickly took off her coat and draped it over them.
When Ziya identified that there was something inside the jar, the woman suddenly collapsed to the ground. Her abnormal behavior heightened the Investigator's alertness. They all gathered around the jar to take a look. As soon as the flashlight shone on it, the woman lost control of her emotions and crawled over to one of the Investigators, clutching his legs while crying out, “It’s not my fault! I tried to stop him; he’s just a madman… I often get beaten.”
“Cuff her and make her quiet,” ordered the team leader. Immediately, someone stepped forward with handcuffs, snapping them onto the woman. She was so frightened that she wet herself and remained silent for a long time.
“Confess honestly—who else is your accomplice?”
“He… he’s my husband; he’s gone mad…”
“Where is he?”
"In the second-floor room."
"Go cuff him; he's a lunatic, we need to be careful."
"Understood." Two people hurried up the stairs toward the second floor.
The others walked over to the Jar, lifting the lid that was only half-open, and were immediately hit by an even stronger stench that nearly knocked the person standing in front of it unconscious.
Then everyone saw a mass of milky-white maggots crawling along the edge of the Jar, with a few already making their way onto the investigator's rubber gloves, which he disgustedly flicked off onto the ground.
"Maggots have appeared; it seems this person has been dead for at least three or four days. The heat must have caused rapid decomposition, and some are about to hatch into flies," one forensic technician said while recording with a camera.
They then noticed the Jar was filled with yellow liquid, likely the bodily fluids released during decomposition. Pieces of the body were arranged in an orderly fashion inside; a severed arm was sliding down the side of the Jar, its fingers appearing mottled, and the broken bone revealed jagged edges. The red flesh surrounding the hand bones still seemed to have nerves that were not completely severed.
"Take them out; don’t look..." The person in charge instructed his subordinates to take Ziya and Sun Meng outside. The other accompanying personnel quickly pulled plastic gloves from their pockets, their expressions suddenly turning serious.
"What’s in the Jar?" Ziya felt something was off and didn’t want to leave; she turned to ask Zhiqing, who was beside her.
"I don’t know either; I tried to look just now but they blocked me. Let’s go! You both are injured; we should go to the hospital," Zhiqing said, supporting Sun Meng as they followed an Investigator up the stairs.
Ziya and Sun Meng went to the hospital to bandage their arms and legs from minor injuries. Zhiqing dropped them off at the school gate as dawn began to break in the sky.
"It's almost dawn; you two should hurry up and get some sleep. After all, today is Sunday—take a good rest," Zhiqing said kindly to Ziya and Sun Meng, her face showing signs of fatigue. Zhiqing's mom kept her distance, smiling as she waited for her son.
"What’s in the Jar? I want to know if it’s related to Wang Yuan," Ziya asked, her face pale and her body appearing frail in the gentle breeze.
"I don't know, I'm not really sure. Didn't you all see clearly inside?"
"I touched it, it smelled so bad. I washed my hands in the hospital restroom with soap multiple times, but it still stinks. I have no idea what's in that jar that could smell this awful."
"I really want to sleep, I'm so tired... Ugh..." Sun Meng seemed to be unable to hold on any longer, yawning one after another.
"You guys should sleep first! The police might come looking for us," Zhiqing said, glancing at her mother in the distance. She waved her hand to signal her mother that they would leave soon.
"Okay, fine! Thank you for saving us. If it weren't for you two..." Ziya didn't finish her sentence; she couldn't bear to imagine what terrible things might have happened afterward.
"This is all thanks to my mom. That woman came to our house asking for rice, and my mom scared her off, making her run to Huangguoshu to burn ghost money. My mom knew their situation and quickly reported it."
"Oh... okay! Bye!" Ziya initially wanted to chat with Zhiqing about what had happened before and speculate on what was in the jar, but seeing Sun Meng swaying back and forth from exhaustion, she decided they should rest first.
Ziya and Sun Meng moved their sore and uncomfortable legs toward the dormitory. This time they entered through the school gate, where a stunned guard stared at the two girls supporting each other as they walked in, shaking his head disapprovingly. It seemed that today's kids were truly hard to manage! Even girls were learning to go astray.
Once inside the dormitory, Ziya and Sun Meng collapsed onto their beds, not wanting to get up again... Not to mention whether they would have nightmares after falling asleep.
But what about the corpse in that jar? The woman was handcuffed, her mental defenses completely shattered as she described her sobbing ordeal... revealing another horrifying murder case.
