As Liang Chao and Sun Meng were embroiled in a heated argument, the doorbell rang.
"Someone's here; it must be Ziya! Go open the door!" Liang Chao urged, realizing that the glass door was firmly locked. If he rushed out, he might inadvertently hurt Sun Meng.
"Your lover has arrived, hahaha! Now that she's here, I'll deal with both of you," Sun Meng said through gritted teeth, her laughter chilling Liang Chao's heart.
Ziya pressed the doorbell multiple times but received no response. Her mind raced with various thoughts and anxieties, her heart hanging in suspense, making her increasingly nervous.
After what felt like an eternity of waiting, the door finally opened, revealing Sun Meng.
"Darling, why did it take so long to open the door? Do you know I’ve been waiting so long that my legs are about to give out?"
"Is it really you?" Sun Meng replied with a faint smile, one that felt strangely unfamiliar to Ziya, leaving her momentarily stunned.
"You’re smiling oddly. What’s wrong with you?" Ziya asked as she peered inside, puzzled by Sun Meng's reluctance to step aside and invite her in.
"Oh, is it strange?" Sun Meng said as she finally stepped aside to let Ziya in. Once Ziya entered, she casually closed the door and quietly bolted it before following Ziya into the living room.
"Wow, not bad! The lighting and everything are much better than before." Ziya admired the newly renovated space, lightly twisting her sneakers as the soles squeaked against the glossy white tiles.
Sun Meng remained silent, coldly observing Ziya's every move.
"Where's Liang Chao?"
Sun Meng smirked inwardly, thinking: So you came looking for Liang Chao. Your old flame has been rekindled. He can ignore me and meet you here; your audacity is growing—you actually came to his home to find your lover.
Not receiving a response from Sun Meng, Ziya casually walked towards the hallway, reaching out to touch the columns and walls as she moved forward.
"Ziya, be careful..." Liang Chao shouted suddenly, startling Ziya. Before she could react, a heavy blow struck her head.
Turning around, Ziya saw Sun Meng raising a clothes rod to hit her. She managed to utter a single word: "You..."
Liang Chao burst out from the glass partition, and upon seeing Ziya collapsed on the ground, he swiftly grabbed Sun Meng's wrist and pinned her down to control her struggles. A sharp slap landed hard on Sun Meng's face, a technique Zhiqing had secretly taught him in the kitchen for emergencies. Sun Meng was unaware of when she had developed intermittent neurosis, which could flare up under stress. A single slap could wake her up, but if it didn’t work, she would need to be taken to a psychiatrist.
Stunned by Liang Chao's sudden blow, Sun Meng froze for a few seconds before covering her stinging face with her hands, filled with confusion. "Chao Chao, why did you hit me?"
At that moment, Sun Meng's expression made Liang Chao realize she was indeed awake. He helped her up, feeling a wave of guilt wash over him. If he hadn’t left her so many times, perhaps she wouldn’t have fallen ill. It was all his fault; he would bear all the consequences himself. Liang Chao whispered to himself.
“It’s okay, you go rest on the sofa. I’ll check on Ziya.”
“Ziya! What happened to Ziya? You hurt her…” Sun Meng suddenly noticed Ziya lying motionless not far away. She hurriedly stood up and rushed over despite Liang Chao's attempts to stop her, crouching down and wrapping her arms around Ziya’s neck, lifting her head.
“Don’t panic; let’s get her to the sofa,” Liang Chao said as he joined Sun Meng in lifting Ziya, only to discover blood flowing from her head, staining her hair and dripping onto the back of her collar in a crimson patch. “Oh no, I’ll call for help.” Liang Chao quickly pulled out his phone and dialed 120.
“Who did this to Ziya? Tell me, Liang Chao, was it you?” Sun Meng touched the bleeding area on Ziya’s head, instantly getting her hand covered in bright red blood. Panic filled her eyes as she spoke.
“It wasn’t me… It’s alright; help is on the way.” Liang Chao checked for Ziya's breath under his fingers and sighed in relief; she was still alive. He just couldn’t understand how Sun Meng could have struck so hard.
The ambulance arrived swiftly, taking Ziya away. Liang Chao dared not leave Sun Meng alone or let Ziya’s mother Anqing know what had happened. He had no choice but to call Zhiqing, who was shocked and furious enough to consider killing Liang Chao for what had happened. He entrusted his mother’s care to his apprentice and rushed to the hospital.
Ziya’s head was wrapped in bandages while she remained unconscious. The doctor called Zhiqing into the office and explained everything in detail. It was then that Zhiqing learned with astonishment that Ziya suffered from Mediterranean anemia at an early stage. The doctor added another perplexing note: Ziya’s condition had improved significantly compared to before; her platelets were able to clot again. Had it not been for this clotting ability during her head injury, who knew if Ziya's life would have been at risk?
Zhiqing gazed at the unconscious Ziya; her pale face was heart-wrenching. It seemed that Ziya had hidden her illness from everyone; otherwise, Anqing would never have allowed her to roam freely. This incident with Sun Meng wouldn’t have occurred.
“Poor girl, please wake up. I will give you all my love. Let me take care of you and love you, okay?” Zhiqing held Ziya's cold hand gently and kissed it near his lips while speaking softly to himself.
Ziya had only sustained superficial injuries; however, she had fainted due to sudden shock combined with her existing weakness leading to temporary shock. After timely administration of intravenous fluids and three stitches on her wound, Ziya finally regained consciousness.
In a dreamlike state, Ziya seemed to faintly hear someone speaking and felt a warmth enveloping her hand. Zhiqing looked at her with a loving smile as she woke up, tears welling in his eyes—tears of gratitude for her return to consciousness.
“Does it still hurt?” Zhiqing spoke softly as if addressing a child in need of protection, his voice gentle enough to evoke an irresistible warmth.
"It doesn't hurt, hiss," Ziya replied, but the pain still made her unable to suppress a soft moan.
"Silly girl, if it hurts, just say it. Why hold it in?" Zhiqing wiped away the beads of sweat that had formed on Ziya's forehead due to the pain with a warm towel.
"Is Sun Meng okay?"
"She's fine, but I feel like their wedding might be postponed. Given Sun Meng's current condition, it's really concerning."
"That's not good. If it's postponed, it will only worsen Sun Meng's condition. She's already in this state because of Liang Chao's repeated departures and other reasons. Maybe after they get married, she'll start to recover slowly."
"Then, is there something you're hiding from us?" Zhiqing changed the subject, looking at Ziya with a probing gaze.
"What could I possibly hide from you? Don't joke around; I just want to get off this hospital bed and go home," Ziya avoided the topic and deliberately changed the subject.
"I know you’re not saying everything. I will respect your choice and help you keep it hidden, but you have to take better care of yourself."
"Okay, I promise," Ziya said gratefully, her pale lips moving as she nodded firmly at Zhiqing.
"Their wedding is the day after tomorrow, right? Can you handle being a bridesmaid?" Zhiqing expressed her concern about whether Ziya would be okay during the event.
