Have you heard about the shocking incident in Nanchong, Sichuan, known as the "Ancient Zongzi" case?
It is said that back then, the authorities deployed a large number of police officers to patrol 24 hours a day. Villagers were too afraid to go out at night. Parents had to pick up their children from school, and those without someone to escort them were taken home by teachers. This became a childhood shadow for many in the Sichuan and Chongqing regions.
The incident occurred on September 20, 2005, when an archaeological team arrived at a village in Nanchong, Sichuan. They discovered a strange coffin in an early Qing Dynasty tomb, containing an ancient corpse.
What was peculiar was that despite being hundreds of years old, the body showed no signs of decay, only some shriveling.
The archaeologists present were all astonished.
This event attracted many villagers who came to watch.
The deputy leader of the archaeological team, Qingshan, suggested immediately calling the police to secure the site and prevent villagers from disturbing the archaeological findings.
After dialing 110, several police officers quickly arrived on the scene, led by Officer Wang and his senior colleague Qian Li. The two instructed the officers to set up a perimeter around the area.
Qingshan then explained to Wang and Qian Li about the strange aspects of the ancient corpse in the coffin. After listening, they exchanged glances and felt that this matter was serious enough to warrant further investigation.
They discovered that the Qing Dynasty corpse showed no signs of decay and had not undergone any preservation treatment. It was bound with nine ropes, and remnants of talismans were still visible on its head.
Both men felt that this ancient corpse was significant and could not be treated casually by the archaeological team; there was a fear it might come back to life.
Wang told Qingshan, "This ancient corpse is tied with nine ropes. Although it’s been ages, it’s clear it was once soaked in cinnabar, which is used for binding zombies. The fact that it hasn’t decayed or been preserved is also very strange."
The half-torn talisman on its head was indeed meant for suppressing zombies.
This heavy stone coffin did not conform to Qing Dynasty burial practices at all. Wang suggested they should burn the ancient corpse immediately.
Qingshan couldn’t make that decision and could only report back to his superiors. Upon hearing about the suggestion to burn it, the leader became furious and said, "This unusual burial method and well-preserved ancient corpse have significant research value. You shouldn’t speak without understanding."
In the end, the stone coffin was hoisted up from underground by the archaeological team.
Both Wang and Qian Li felt an ominous premonition and quickly directed the officers to strengthen security around the site.
Due to the lack of other burial items, the Ancient Corpse became the main research subject for the staff.
Qingshan, a member of the archaeological team, removed his gloves to gently touch the skin of the Ancient Corpse in order to determine its moisture level.
Seeing this scene, Old Wang and Qian Li were both startled and broke out in a cold sweat, quickly urging him to stop for fear it might come back to life.
However, Qingshan was unfazed. Years of archaeological work had made him feel experienced enough not to damage the Ancient Corpse.
Suddenly, the Ancient Corpse seemed to move. Then, everyone watched in horror as one of its tightly shut eyes suddenly opened, and the corpse sprang up as if it were equipped with springs, making gurgling sounds.
Old Wang and Qian Li felt their hearts sink; it had truly come back to life.
The police officers present and the villagers watching were also horrified by this terrifying sight.
Qingshan, who was closest to the Ancient Corpse, was so frightened that he fell to the ground.
Suddenly, the Ancient Corpse let out a shriek and began to stand up, causing Qingshan's legs to go weak with fear.
Sitting on the ground, Qingshan struggled against his body as if trying to break free from nine ropes binding him while inching away. Perhaps due to centuries of decay, the ropes had rotted so badly that they snapped entirely under the strength of the Ancient Corpse.
Everyone was frozen in shock at this sight, while the Ancient Corpse approached Qingshan. He shouted, "Don't come any closer!"
The Ancient Corpse was about to pounce on him.
Qian Li instructed Old Wang to get gasoline to burn the zombie while he ran toward Qingshan's direction.
The zombie had raised its arm, its sharp nails poised to grab the paralyzed Qingshan. Terrified beyond belief, Qingshan lost all ability to dodge and fainted from sheer fright.
In that critical moment, three gunshots rang out as bullets pierced through the zombie's head. Old Wang and Qian Li knew this would be ineffective and would only provoke the zombie further.
However, those three shots did buy some time before the zombie lunged at them. Seizing that moment, Qian Li positioned himself between the Ancient Corpse and Qingshan. The zombie lunged at Qian Li but moved slowly enough for him to evade each time.
Qian Li cautiously circled around the zombie, buying time for Old Wang. But then he accidentally stepped on Qingshan's body, prompting a painful sound from him as if he wanted to say something to everyone.
Qian Li quickly dodged backward. Although he managed to avoid the claws aimed at his head, the zombie's sharp talons still caught him, leaving five long, blood-red gashes across his right eye, with the eyeball hanging from his cheek.
At that moment, Old Wang rushed over and was horrified to see his senior brother injured.
Ignoring his own wounds, Qian Li focused on restraining the zombie, hoping to give Old Wang a chance to burn the creature alive.
He charged forward again, evading the zombie's swinging claws and maneuvering behind it. Grabbing a broken rope from the zombie, he wrapped it around its neck with all his strength, temporarily subduing it. He urged Old Wang to hurry and pour gasoline on it to set it ablaze.
Old Wang hesitated, afraid of hurting his senior brother.
"Come on! It will break free soon; I can't hold it for much longer. Do you want it to hurt more people?" Qian Li shouted.
Realizing his senior brother was right, Old Wang gritted his teeth and splashed a bucket of gasoline onto the zombie before igniting a lighter and throwing it toward the zombie and Qian Li's position.
In an instant, flames erupted around the Ancient Corpse. Seeing the fire ignite, Qian Li let go of the zombie but found himself caught in the blaze as well.
After that incident, while Qian Li survived, his eye was severely disfigured, and the hair on his head had been burned away.
The event caused a huge stir in the area, with many photos circulating from the scene. Rumors spread that the Ancient Corpse had taken a train to bite people elsewhere, causing widespread panic among the locals.
However, these were merely baseless rumors from those who did not understand the truth and were not worth believing.
