I clenched my fists, my heart racing uncontrollably. "Don't panic, it might just be Xiao Hui coming back," I said in a low voice to Fei Wan, though my hand instinctively rested on the hilt of my sword.
The footsteps grew louder, and a familiar figure appeared at the doorway.
" Xiao Hui!" Fei Wan exclaimed.
Xiao Hui wagged its tail, exhaustion evident in its eyes. It was covered in dirt, as if it had been through a fierce battle.
I crouched down and gently stroked Xiao Hui's fur. "Where have you been? Did you run into trouble?"
Xiao Hui let out a low whimper, a flicker of worry crossing its eyes. I furrowed my brow, an ominous feeling creeping over me.
"Let's not dwell on that for now." I stood up, scanning the surroundings warily. "We need to get out of this cursed place and find somewhere safe to hide."
Fei Wan nodded. "I know a spot where no one will find us."
We hurriedly gathered our parents' belongings and quietly slipped out of the attic.
Moonlight poured down like water, softly illuminating the empty streets. We walked briskly along the dark alleyways, glancing back occasionally, fearful of being followed.
"We're here." Fei Wan stopped in front of a dilapidated warehouse.
I pushed open the rusty iron door, dust swirling in the air. The corners were cluttered with debris, spider webs clung to the walls, and a musty smell hit me hard.
"This rundown place is indeed hidden; no one would think we’re hiding here," I said as I looked around, forcing a faint smile.
Fei Wan shrugged. "It's a bit broken, but it's better than being caught."
I nodded and began to search through the belongings left by my parents. Suddenly, a yellowed photograph caught my attention.
In the photo, my parents were gently stroking a massive mythical beast, their faces radiating happiness.
"This is..." My voice trembled as I stared at the picture in disbelief.
Fei Wan leaned in to take a look. "Oh my God, isn't that the legendary Eye of Time and Space?"
I clutched the photograph tightly as memories flooded back. When I was six, I witnessed my parents sacrifice themselves to protect the mythical beast. The brutal battle, the deafening explosions, the smoke filling the air... everything was vivid in my mind as if it had happened just yesterday.
"They... they sacrificed themselves to protect the Eye of Time and Space," I managed to say, my throat tightening and my eyes stinging.
Fei Wan gently embraced me. "Your parents were true heroes."
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my emotions. "I finally understand. They didn't die by accident; they willingly gave everything to safeguard the harmony between humans and nature."
Fei Wan held my hand firmly. "So, shall we continue their mission?"
I nodded resolutely. "We must. For our parents, for this damned world."
Just then, Xiao Hui suddenly perked up its ears, its fur bristling with alertness.
"Someone's coming!" Fei Wan whispered, her face instantly turning pale.
We held our breath, hiding behind a pile of clutter. The sound of our heartbeats echoed loudly in the silent warehouse.
The footsteps grew closer, and a familiar voice sent chills through my veins.
"I know you're here, so stop hiding." It was that bastard, Wu Mingyuan!
Fei Wan and I exchanged a glance and stood up simultaneously. There was no escaping now; we might as well face him head-on.
Wu Mingyuan stood at the door, a sinister grin on his face. "Finally found you! What a great place to play hide and seek."
"What the hell do you want?" I asked coldly, wishing I could smash that hypocritical face of his with a punch.
Wu Mingyuan laughed heartily. "What do I want? Of course, to take your powers and complete my plan! Did you really think your parents' deaths were an accident? How naive!"
I clenched my fists, feeling the power of the Eye of Time and Space surging within me. "You beast! My parents trusted you, and you betrayed them!"
Wu Mingyuan suddenly raised his hand, dark energy gathering in his palm. "Then let's see who is stronger! Today, I will finish you both once and for all!"
I scoffed. "You think someone like you can take me down? I'll make you regret ever coming into this world!"
