"Xiao Ran, you got accepted as a civil servant, and you didn't even tell your aunt?"
I tightened my grip on the phone. "Didn't I tell you not to let Grandma know?"
I had instructed a few of my mom's friends not to inform my grandmother. Yet, somehow, she still found out.
My mom said, "Your grandma accidentally stumbled upon it."
I replied coldly, "I don't care. You told her, so don't bother me!"
After hanging up, I glared at my grandmother. She gave me a smug smile in return.
I rushed up to her. "Why did you do that? You promised to keep it a secret!"
Grandma feigned a dramatic gesture, clutching her chest. "Xiao Ran, I didn't intentionally leak your news. I just mentioned it casually to the family."
My dad chimed in, "Xiao Ran, don't make a big deal out of this. Your grandma cares about you. She revealed your news by accident; it wasn't on purpose."
My younger brother added, "Sis, don’t blame Grandma; she’s just looking out for you."
I stood in front of Grandma, staring at her intently. After a moment, I smiled and said, "Fine, you all have the numbers on your side; I can't argue with you."
"But Grandma, this is my final warning. Stay out of my business from now on."
"Otherwise, you'll have to deal with the consequences."
With that, I turned and headed back to my room.
My dad slapped me across the face. "How can you talk to your grandma like that?"
I lowered my head, my eyes red with anger.
My brother chimed in sarcastically from the side, "Sis, Grandma only wants what's best for you. You got accepted as a civil servant; we’re all happy for you. Grandma is definitely thrilled too; she’s been busy with everything for your sake."
"You didn't even say thank you, and yet you say such things."
I gritted my teeth and forced a smile. "Grandma, I'm sorry. It was my fault."
My brother snorted and went into the house, closing the door behind him.
My dad sighed. "Xiao Ran, your brother is right. Your grandma is getting old and has been running around for you. Not only do you not appreciate it, but you also blame her?"
I lowered my head and remained silent.
My dad patted my shoulder. "Xiao Ran, I know you're proud and don't like being controlled. But your grandma is of an age; can't you show her a little understanding?"
I nodded slightly.
He went into the house, leaving me staring at their retreating figures with a cold smile.
Mingzhe, protect yourself. Since they won't let me deal with Grandma, then I won't care about them anymore. Grandma, good luck to you.
The day before the interview, I needed a quiet environment to prepare. But Grandma wouldn't stop making noise. She was in the kitchen chopping filling, the sound echoing throughout the house.
My mom asked her to keep it down, but she refused. "I'm making dumplings for Xiao Ran; isn't she on break today?"
After saying that, she knocked on my door with enthusiasm. "Xiao Ran, open the door! Grandma brought you dumplings!"
I opened the door, and she beamed as she placed a plate of dumplings on my desk. "Xiao Ran, eat up! Grandma made these chive dumplings just for you; they're your favorite."
I replied coldly, "Grandma, I told you not to bother me."
Her face stiffened, and she looked at me with tears welling in her eyes.
"My Mom" quickly tried to smooth things over, "Mom, Xiao Ran didn't mean it that way. Xiao Ran has an interview tomorrow; she wants to study in peace."
Grandma pouted, "Then just eat some dumplings before studying."
"My Mom" looked at me helplessly.
I shook my head at "My Mom."
With a sigh, "My Mom" said, "Mom, you should go out for a bit; Xiao Ran needs to study."
Grandma refused to leave, "I'll stay here and watch Xiao Ran eat; then I'll go."
The door next door opened, and my brother's irritated voice came through, "What now? Can you all be quiet for a moment?"
"My Mom" explained softly to him, "Xiao Ran has an interview tomorrow; she wants to study in peace."
My brother replied impatiently, "Then let her go eat outside. I'm trying to study here with all this noise."
Grandma immediately chimed in, "Right, Xiao Ran, you should go eat outside."
I glared at her, wishing I could burn a hole through her with my stare.
