We walked in silence to Li Dawei's front door.
"Are you sure he's home?" I asked nervously, standing at the entrance.
"Absolutely," Yu Shenglin replied, pointing to a window on the left side of the second floor of the villa. "See? The curtains are open. I've been watching for a while."
I looked up and indeed saw a window with no curtains drawn.
Li Dawei's house was a three-story villa covering several hundred square meters, complete with a small yard. While it couldn't compare to Yu Shenglin's home, it was still indicative of a wealthy second-generation lifestyle. His parents had built their fortune from scratch through decades of business, and by Li Dawei's generation, the family assets had reached over a billion.
I exhaled, ready to step inside when Yu Shenglin suddenly grabbed my arm. "Wait."
"What for?" I asked.
"To calm down a bit," he said, gesturing to my face. "Looking like that, you'll probably end up in a fight once you go in."
I touched my face; it was indeed burning hot, hot enough to fry an egg on.
"With experience, you'll get a feel for these things. Let me go in first so you don't see anything that might trigger you," Yu Shenglin said, patting my shoulder and signaling me to move forward.
I nodded and followed him inside.
To be honest, I felt a bit anxious—not because of Li Dawei, but because of Yu Shenglin. I had been so focused on finding the scumbag that I hadn't really considered his situation. Now standing at his doorstep, I suddenly realized that Yu Shenglin seemed quite wealthy himself. Living in this kind of villa area required some financial backing.
But right now, I didn't have time to think about his wealth; I needed to focus on my own issues.
"Don't be nervous," Yu Shenglin said as he noticed my pace slowing down and stopped to wait for me. "You want to catch him in the act; I'll handle that guy for you. If he dares to resist, just call the police."
"Okay," I replied, nodding as I stepped through the door behind him.
I knew what was about to happen, but I still felt a knot of anxiety in my stomach.
The moment I stood at Li Dawei's doorstep, my mind went blank. What should I say? No, I couldn't just ramble on. I had to get straight to the point; I had reached my limit.
Yu Shenglin didn’t open the door immediately. Instead, he pulled out his phone and made a call. I shot him a puzzled glance but stayed silent.
When the call connected, a sweet voice came through: “Hello, Shenglin, what’s up?”
“Where are you?”
“I’m out for a run, why?”
Yu Shenglin paused for two seconds. “When did you start running? I didn’t know.”
“I… I just started recently. Why are you back?”
“I'm a bit tired; come downstairs and let me in.”
He hung up the phone and noticed me staring at him. “She’s probably not ready yet; let’s catch her off guard.”
I rolled my eyes at him. Wasn’t this just about catching someone cheating? Why complicate things? He could have just pushed the door open.
Yu Shenglin winked at me, looking pleased with himself. “Did you see that? The two people on the monitor are completely flustered, scrambling to get dressed.”
I ignored him and moved closer to the door, pressing my ear against it to listen to the commotion inside.
“Wait,” Yu Shenglin said as he stepped over to block me. “You should wait a bit longer; if it gets too intense, you might not be able to handle it.”
I shot him a glare. “I think you just want to enjoy the show.”
Yu Shenglin smiled but didn’t respond.
I exhaled and put my phone away in my bag. I knew what was about to happen, but the tension in my chest only grew stronger.
I took a deep breath, mentally preparing myself.
