I got married.
I joined the the Zhang Family.
My heart was filled with both anxiety and anticipation.
I worried that Zhang Zhe would be distant with me.
After all, this marriage was something I had sought after.
But on the night of the wedding, although Zhang Zhe's smile didn't reach his eyes, he was quite enthusiastic.

I felt a sense of relief wash over me.
As long as Zhang Zhe could treat me with respect, that would be enough.
I knew he could manage that.
He had a sense of propriety.
My sister-in-law was about to give birth.
I was very worried and told my in-laws that I wanted to go home to take care of her.

I was furious.

My father-in-law was enraged. "Nonsense! You married into my family, which means you're part of the the Zhang Family and should stay here.

I was infuriated.
I didn't know where I found the courage to say to my father-in-law, "Dad, your thinking is too outdated.
"This isn't the past; women can hold up half the sky, and men can take care of children at home.

Zhang Zhe shouted at me, "Jiang Nuan Nuan, do you even know who you're talking to?
"Get out!"
With tears in my eyes, I lifted my head to say something back.
A loud slap echoed through the room.
I stood there in disbelief. "Zhang Zhe, you actually hit me?"
Zhang Zhe sneered, "Of course I did! How dare you contradict my dad? You're utterly ignorant!"
I felt a mix of shame and anger.
Zhang Zhe actually hit me? My parents had never laid a hand on me growing up.
Zhang Zhe hit me? I felt so wronged.
I slept in a separate room from Zhang Zhe. He ignored me, and I ignored him. He pretended to be warm and enthusiastic in front of others, while I felt a chill all over. Was I really that foolish in his eyes? He acted as if we were deeply connected, but did he think I would let him do as he pleased? I refused to share a room with him. If he dared to enter my room, I would scream and accuse him of harassment.
He was furious. "You're such a shrew!" he exclaimed. I took it as a compliment.
Zhang Zhe was growing increasingly impatient with me. He was lively and cheerful outside, but cold as ice in front of me. I felt a chill around him while putting on a bright smile for others. Neither of us was having an easy time. All I wanted was his basic respect. He didn’t have to like me, but he had to respect me.
As night fell, I found it hard to sleep due to the cold. After some thought, I quietly put on my clothes and got up to call for the Health Consultant.
I asked her, "Is the due date in just a few days?"
The Health Consultant nodded.
I felt a little relieved. After considering it, I took the Health Consultant and left the the Zhang Family.
