Chapter Sixteen: Something Seems Off
Of course, Bai Luo was not idle on the sidelines; the main persuasion still relied on him. These two amnesiac girls might share a sense of camaraderie, but if anyone truly wanted to win someone over, it was still Bai Luo who would do the convincing.
For someone who has lost their memory, the most important thing is undoubtedly their recollections.
Sadako could not resist the temptation to regain her memories.
Although her personality was much more introverted than Mizumura Memeko's, she was also more mature. She had already realized that she was not American, yet found herself in such a place with lost memories, and was not even a living being; this left her feeling confused and helpless.
She was willing to temporarily follow Bai Luo and Mizumura Memeko, this strange duo, but she had no intention of forming a contract like Mizumura Memeko had with Bai Luo. The only reason she chose to stay with Bai Luo for now was that she had nowhere else to go. He was the first person to actively engage her in conversation, yet she remained sufficiently wary of strangers.
Shan Village Sadako finally stepped out from the television screen. Bai Luo's pale eyes returned to normal in an instant as he turned around and saw an unusual woman in white slowly making her way through the crowd. Many gazes fell upon her, but Sadako ignored them. Her hair hung loosely, revealing only one dark eye as she walked toward Bai Luo and Logan.
Logan was somewhat surprised; he glanced at Bai Luo and then at the woman's obviously lifeless pale skin. He opened his mouth but found himself at a loss for words.
Sadako then spoke up, "I am willing to follow you for now. If you can help me regain my memories and experiences, I will consider you a friend and thank you."
Bai Luo fell silent for a moment before replying, "What if your experiences are unfortunate and tragic? I must warn you that not everyone becomes like you after death."
Sadako responded, "I want to know what has happened to me."
Upon hearing this, Bai Luo said nothing further. However, he felt that in this world, perhaps only he understood what kind of existence Sadako and Mizumura Memeko were and what experiences they had endured.
Yet Bai Luo still added a reminder: "But I have one request: can you promise not to kill indiscriminately from now on?"
Sadako hesitated slightly at this question. "Although I have lost my memories and experiences, when I kill... I always feel exhilarated."
Bai Luo replied, "But if you do not stop killing, this world is full of people who will use violence to stop you from killing, and I will be the first who wants to end your life."
Logan glanced at the two individuals. To be honest, regarding Bai Luo's earlier remarks about masters, he was starting to believe them. The words and demeanor of Bai Luo at this moment seemed far beyond what an ordinary nine-and-a-half-year-old child could express. After a moment of thought, he said, "In the moment of killing and for a while afterward, you might feel an overwhelming sense of fulfillment. But when you live long enough, you'll realize that every person you've killed eventually transforms into a haunting pain, lingering around you day in and day out."
Shan Village Sadako looked at Logan for a moment, fell silent for a while, then softly replied, "Alright, I promise you."
"I hope you can keep your word," Bai Luo exhaled.
However, Sadako did not respond further; her figure gradually faded until she disappeared completely.
At the same time, Bai Luo heard Mizumura Memeko's voice in his mind: "I'm going to talk to Sister Sadako."
Also at that moment, a series of System notifications echoed in Bai Luo's mind.
[Mission Objective: Kill or successfully control Shan Village Sadako before she casts a wide-range curse on the ordinary people of Kansas City. Completed.]
[Mission Reward: 600 Old White Rabbit Candy Points, eleven pieces of Old White Rabbit Milk Candy have been credited.]
[Current mission completed.]
Bai Luo smiled and shook his head. Turning around, he found Logan looking at him.
Logan shook the bottle of alcohol in his hand and asked, "Care to share your experiences?"
"I think my experiences would seem quite ordinary to you."
Yet Logan chuckled and shook his head again, calling out to a waiter on the other side, "Bring me another bottle of wine and some lemonade."
"Two bottles of wine, brother!"
That was Bai Luo.
He smiled and noticed out of the corner of his eye that the television was playing a speech by the anti-mutant Senator in the bustling area of Kansas City. He then turned his gaze back and said, "Do you really want to hear? My experience is quite simple. I was born in a town in Missouri and lived aimlessly for nine years, during which I beat up a brat who was even younger than me."
Logan remarked, "It seems like you're quite proud of that."
Bai Luo replied, "Beating someone up is always something that brings joy."
Logan laughed heartily.
Bai Luo chuckled as well. He suddenly felt that this Logan, who was so close yet seemed so approachable—perhaps because he hadn't revealed his ferocious claws—might actually make for an interesting conversation.
However, before Bai Luo could speak again, he furrowed his brow slightly.
Logan immediately noticed the unusual behavior of this child who seemed more mature than his age and asked, "What's wrong?"
But Bai Luo did not respond.
At that very moment, his System suddenly emitted an alarm.
This alarm sounded different from the usual dull electronic synthesized voice of the System; it was a genuine warning sound.
【Warning! Warning!】
The System's sudden outburst of alarms caught Bai Luo's attention. His first thought was about various troublesome scenarios—like the System automatically uninstalling itself.
But although his System was unreliable, it didn't seem to be that unreliable.
After issuing the warning about three times, the voice suddenly quieted down and transformed into a chilling electronic synthesized tone.
【Ding~ Reincarnator will arrive at the battlefield in thirty seconds.】
"Please prepare yourself, host."
At that moment, Bai Luo fell into a state of immense shock. His tightly furrowed brows twitched, and his mouth hung open wide.
Logan looked at Bai Luo, somewhat puzzled. To him, this Eastern boy seemed rather peculiar. "What's wrong with you?"
However, Bai Luo couldn't afford to pay attention to Mr. Wolverine. He quickly regained his composure and confirmed the reality of the situation with the System.
The System's response was:
"There are thirteen seconds until the Reincarnator arrives on the battlefield."
And then...
Bai Luo jumped up, slamming his hands on the table as he shouted, "What is going on here? What the hell is happening?!"
