Chapter 38: A New Employee at the Bureau
Bai Luo's clothes were completely ruined, and he couldn't even fit into his underwear anymore.
He had no choice but to instruct Mizumura Memeko to go buy some things.
Well, Nick Fury had given Bai Luo quite a bit of money, and since Bai Luo stored it in his Item Storage Talisman, it remained intact. However, Mizumura Memeko was a Vengeful Spirit, so it was clear she couldn't actually take the money to buy anything.
Thus, it fell to Mizumura Memeko to steal clothes for Bai Luo.
Mizumura Memeko did quite well in this task; within half an hour, she returned with clothes and the latest newspapers that Bai Luo urgently needed.
What he needed most right now was to figure out which world node of the Marvel Comics universe he was currently in.
However, while changing clothes, Bai Luo felt a bit awkward because he had taken off his clothes, and the two Vengeful Spirits across from him showed no intention of looking away.
Bai Luo looked at Sadako and said, "Mizumura Memeko is one thing, but Sadako, you..."
Shan Village Sadako shot him a sidelong glance and calmly stated, "If I wanted to look, you wouldn't be able to hide even if you were wearing clothes."
Bai Luo replied, "Alright then, since that's the case, I won't lose anything."
With that, he lifted the burlap sack he was wearing and quickly began to change clothes.
While Shan Village Sadako was like that, she still slightly turned her gaze away when Bai Luo started changing. On the other hand, Mizumura Memeko stared intently at Bai Luo's body without blushing or skipping a beat. "Bai Luo, everything about you has gotten bigger!"
"Just like you saw before!"
Bai Luo, feeling incredibly frustrated, changed his clothes and picked up a newspaper. At first glance, he spotted the information he needed.
The headline of the Planet Daily read: "This Year's Highest Honor Award Winner Tony Stark Missing in Afghanistan for Two Days."
Tony Stark had gone to the United States Air Force Base in Afghanistan to test and sell new weapons when he was ambushed by a terrorist organization and captured on the spot. This was reminiscent of a scene from the Iron Man movie's second act.
This incident was also a significant turning point for Tony Stark in becoming Iron Man.
In Bai Luo's view, being captured wasn't necessarily a bad thing for Tony Stark. Perhaps if he hadn't been attacked by the terrorist organization, he could have still created the Iron Man Suit in the future but might not have become Iron Man.
It was precisely this encounter with the terrorist organization that led Tony Stark to genuinely establish a desire to use his own strength and weapons to help others. Otherwise, he would forever remain a wealthy playboy, manufacturing deadly weapons merely to maintain his wealth.
However, what truly caught Bai Luo's attention was another report.
It was a news piece beneath the headline, a follow-up on an earlier story that still managed to occupy the front page, indicating its explosive nature.
The content was straightforward—following the mutant attack on the White House, the establishment of the Mutant Registration Act had become a controversial topic.
Mutants... attacking the White House?
Bai Luo furrowed his brow slightly. To be honest, he had experienced quite a long time since then. After a moment, he recalled that the White House had been attacked by mutants, which was indeed part of the X-Men storyline.
The attacking mutant was Nightcrawler Kurt Wagner, whose mutation was quite severe; his skin had turned blue, and he even possessed a non-human tail. His ability was teleportation, allowing him to appear anywhere within his line of sight. In the film, he was controlled by William Stryker and attacked the White House, altering the government's original strategy towards mutants. This marked the beginning of Strucker's plan.
William Stryker was a racist, a staunch anti-mutant, and held a certain influence within the military establishment. His life was dedicated to one mission—exterminating all mutants from the world.
After Stryker orchestrated the attack on the White House by Nightcrawler, it marked the first step of his plan. He intended to use this incident to persuade the President to alter the government's humanitarian stance towards mutants, allowing him to implement more aggressive measures.
Stryker's first act of aggression was to target Charles's school.
Bai Luo frowned slightly. Although twenty years had passed, the likelihood that his sister was still at Charles's school was high, and he could not reach out to Charles directly.
Back in 1988, one of Bai Luo's plans had been to eliminate Stryker first.
This man had committed numerous atrocities; even Logan's adamantium skeleton had come from this madman.
Stryker's son was also a mutant, but Stryker, being a cruel father, had forcibly transformed his son into a weapon designed to combat and control mutants. His understanding of mutants and the mutant world surpassed that of ordinary mutants.
Bai Luo hadn’t been able to act twenty years ago, but it was not too late now.
He formulated a rough plan and decided to head straight for New York. Neither Sadako nor Mizumura Memeko objected to this decision.
Though Bai Luo had money, twenty years had passed, and both his identification and the temporary documents Nick Fury had arranged for him were no longer valid.
Despite this, he still planned to use conventional means of transportation—by plane.
The invalidation of his documents did not significantly impact Bai Luo because as long as S.H.I.E.L.D. existed in this world, he could go wherever he wanted under their name without issue.
He quickly gathered his belongings and allowed Sadako and Mizumura Memeko, both Vengeful Spirits, to possess his body as he made his way to the nearest airport.
Without a doubt, facing an unregistered individual with all expired identification, Bai Luo found himself stuck while trying to buy a ticket.
"No way, your documents are all expired, and this here is a child. You... you must be at least in your twenties, right? Are you out of your mind?"
Bai Luo didn't care; he smiled and said, "I might be crazy."
With that, he casually pulled out a yellowed and brittle piece of paper from his clothing and laid it out in front of the ticket seller. It was the "invitation letter" that Nick Fury had given him earlier.
The moment Bai Luo signed it meant he was now part of S.H.I.E.L.D.
He pushed the paper forward and said, "This is my identification—there's no need for you to look at me like that. You just need to report up the chain whether this document is valid; anyone who truly understands will know with just a glance."
Bai Luo spoke with considerable authority.
The ticket seller glanced at the paper that looked like it was from decades ago, along with the official seal and the name of the Department of Homeland Strategic Defense, Attack, and Logistics Support that she had never heard of before. She couldn't help but swallow hard.
