Chapter 46: Kansas Incident
William Stryker surprisingly had no visible injuries. He was tied to a chair by Logan, and aside from looking somewhat haggard, there were no other noticeable wounds. When Bai Luo and Lorna walked in, he even managed to smile faintly at them.
Bai Luo maintained a calm demeanor.
Lorna followed behind Bai Luo, feeling a twinge of regret for her decision—why did she come in here?
However, Lorna Dane harbored a deep-seated hatred for Strucker. With Bai Luo's intervention, the life trajectory of this mutant known as Polaris had undergone a complete transformation. She was no longer on the run; her boyfriend was no longer in the picture. Instead, she had grown up at Charles' School for Gifted Youngsters, which was, in a sense, her second home—until Strucker's forces arrived.
Thus, upon seeing Strucker, Lorna Dane adopted a cold and fierce gaze, staring at William Stryker with an air of authority.
Bai Luo pulled up a chair and sat down in front of Strucker.
Outside, it was completely dark now. The hotel was old, and the lighting in the room was dim.
Bai Luo said, "What do you know about my half-sister?"
Strucker glanced at him and replied evasively, "I thought you came here to ruin my plans because of your sister."
"Answer my question," Bai Luo said, looking directly at him. "I know you don’t have much information; otherwise, you would have used it as leverage by now. Your current situation doesn’t change that. You can choose: say nothing, and I will make you spend this night in agony. Believe me, my abilities extend beyond just making a phone call from the future. Or you can tell me everything you know about Bai Luo tonight without suffering my illegal assault."
Bai Luo’s words were quite blunt but carried weight. Lorna couldn’t help but glance at him; however, she was more curious about the implications of his statement. "Bai Chu is your sister?"
Bai Luo glanced at her and asked, "Have you seen her?"
"I was here for the first few years after I arrived... she was always around, but then..." Lorna looked at Bai Luo, her previously softened gaze turning hostile again. "She always thought about you, and in the end, her disappearance is directly related to you."
Bai Luo realized that Lorna indeed knew her sister, and Lorna's impression of Bai Chu seemed to be quite good.
This time, however, Bai Luo didn't say much. Instead, she replied, "This matter is indeed related to me; I had some things happen."
Lorna didn't have a good impression of Bai Luo—after all, anyone would feel uneasy waking up from a coma to find a strange man shamelessly pinching their face and claiming to be their fiancé. Who could maintain a good mindset in such a situation?
Yet Bai Luo had already shifted her gaze back to Strucker, her eyes carrying a hint of danger.
William Stryker licked his lips and then smiled. "I have always enjoyed helping others. Even Logan, who wants to know what happened to him in the past, I am naturally willing to tell him. As for you... I'm sorry, but I don't know much about Bai Chu. If I had known you would stand in my way today and completely ruin my plans, perhaps I would have paid more attention to her back then. But over a decade ago, Bai Chu was just an ordinary mutant to me and any faction in this world. No one paid attention to her, nor should anyone have attacked her. However, there was indeed a battle that might have involved mutants in some remote area of Kansas back then. Bai Chu may have participated in it, but unfortunately, almost everyone related to that battle either disappeared or went missing. They haven't shown up in all these years, and this matter had little impact on me; there were no follow-ups or ripples caused by it. Perhaps someone is still investigating it, but I am certainly not one of them—I have more important things to do."
As he mentioned having more important things to do, Strucker's gaze turned toward the mutant Lorna at the side, his meaning clear.
He was only interested in active mutants who could affect the world of ordinary people.
The only reason Bai Chu appeared in Kansas was to find Bai Luo.
Kansas City lies within both Missouri and Kansas territories; if Bai Chu could trace the flight that led to Bai Luo's crash, she would undoubtedly follow that trail.
Bai Luo had to admit that Mizumura Memeko's methods were indeed impressive. For over twenty years, not only had Bai Chu failed to find her, but even an organization like S.H.I.E.L.D. had not located Bai Luo's whereabouts.
Strucker looked at Bai Luo's changing expression and smiled, saying, "Bai Luo—I advise you to stop searching. Bai Chu has been missing for so many years; she is not an important figure. If she had really fallen into someone's hands, she would have been dead by now. You will never have the chance to see her alive again."
In response to this statement, Bai Luo delivered a thunderous punch. Neither Lorna nor Strucker could see how Bai Luo made his move, but Strucker's head was knocked to the side, half of his face turning red as he spat out a bloodied tooth.
Yet, instead of getting angry, the man laughed.
Lorna took a small step back; she could see the blazing fury burning in Bai Luo's eyes.
This was the first time she had seen such an expression from him in all the time they had known each other.
Bai Luo stood up, confident that Strucker did not know any more than he had said. The situation was as Strucker described; although Bai Chu was a mutant and important to Bai Luo, there were thousands of mutants in this world. To others, Bai Chu was just an ordinary mutant, and Strucker had no reason to investigate her further.
Bai Luo turned around and, just before leaving the room, said to Lorna, "Whether he lives or dies is no longer important. If you find his appearance repulsive, you can help him with some plastic surgery."
Strucker's expression finally changed. He glanced at Lorna and then at Bai Luo, hissing, "If I die, you will never find Charles and those filthy mutant children!"
Bai Luo paused slightly and replied, "I'm sorry, but I know your plan inside out."
With that, he nodded at Lorna and walked out of the room, just as he saw Logan standing outside. Logan handed him a bottle of alcohol and asked, "Did you get the information you wanted?"
Bai Luo shook his head and said, "He doesn't know much. The professor and the others should be sent to Acre Lake. You can meet up with Phoenix and the others in Boston first, then go rescue the professor together. Strucker is in our hands now; they are helpless."
Logan was somewhat surprised. In fact, aside from discussing his past with him, Strucker had said nothing else. He wasn't a fool; he would casually mention trivial matters but remained tight-lipped about anything crucial.
Unfortunately, Bai Luo was a traveler from another world, just as he had stated himself.
He was well aware of Strucker's plans.
However, Logan was still quite surprised that Bai Luo knew so much information. He asked, "Did you find this out yourself?"
"Something like that," Bai Luo replied dismissively. "You guys should have no problem rescuing Charles. He might know something, but I can't go with you. I have something important to take care of—I'll head back to the school to find you later."
What Bai Luo referred to was, of course, Iron Man.
The System's missions were always absurd; if Tony really got into some kind of accident and died, Bai Luo would be in trouble too.
As for the mutants, they managed to rescue Charles smoothly in the movies. Now that Strucker was in their hands, there was no way anything could go wrong; Bai Luo could rest easy.
