Chapter Eighty-One: Airdropping into the Olympics
Three hours later.
Bai Luo sat on the plane, reading the Planet Daily.
The headline on the front page read: "Talismancer Joins Forces for the Beijing Olympics Today."
Looking further down, there were follow-up reports on the previous news about Talismancer's pursuit of The Hulk, marking him as the third superhero to have his identity exposed after Captain America and Iron Man, along with the subsequent impacts of this revelation.
Bai Luo was now a celebrity.
Of course, Nick Fury was quite frustrated about this.
This trip had been surprisingly smooth, without any hiccups. Bai Luo's arrival at the Bird's Nest was met with considerable attention, and he was even invited to perform a show.
Bai Luo's performance was remarkably simple. He pulled out a large handful of talisman papers and tossed them into the air. In an instant, those papers transformed into brilliant displays of fire, earth, water, metal, and wood, scattering across the sky in a dazzling array of colors.
This scene might not have been anything special in America, but in China, it caused a stir among the audience.
They recognized those Yellow Paper Talismans and understood the power they unleashed. In that moment, the entire venue erupted in cheers, creating a wave of excitement.
Of course, aside from this spectacle, Bai Luo had little connection to the sporting events themselves.
As a time traveler, Bai Luo even remembered how many gold medals China won in this Olympic Games and which events were particularly outstanding.
008—this was a year of disaster for China but also one of great inspiration.
After taking a trip to the Olympics, Bai Luo began to run around China, searching for materials for talisman paper, the Talisman Pen, and ink.
In China, the culture of talismans has a long history. What is hard to find in America is well-known here.
Although fewer ordinary people mention or understand talismans as time progresses, at least most have heard of them, and some are quite knowledgeable about various aspects of talisman culture.
Bai Luo had previously tried searching online and came here to verify some information while buying materials.
With books, knowledge is abundant; without them, it is limited.
In summary, Bai Luo's trip to China went surprisingly smoothly. If it weren't for his need to investigate the Kansas incident, he might have stayed in China indefinitely.
No matter how many years pass or where he travels, dealing with different people, this place remains his homeland.
However, his sister's disappearance is closely related to Kansas. Bai Luo had to make the trip, especially since he had just allied himself with Steve, a significant figure; he certainly intended to make the most of that connection.
Thus, after completing his tasks and confirming that Steve was free as well, Bai Luo returned to the United States. The two met directly at the airport in Los Angeles and then hurriedly headed to Kansas.
When he first saw Captain America, Steve's expression was not very good. He didn't hide anything from Bai Luo and said directly, "The leads I've been following on Hydra have gone cold recently. The last information I received was that Schmidt has been researching a powerful virus for years. However, what exactly that virus is and where Schmidt's laboratory is remain unclear."
Unfortunately, Steve's lead chain had broken off completely; there was only so much information available, and there was no way to investigate further. That was why he had come to Kansas with Bai Luo.
The place where Bai Chu disappeared was a town in Kansas that had turned into a pit. Over the years, the Kansas State Government had implemented greening and reconstruction projects that transformed this pit and its surroundings into a sea of greenery.
In terms of investigation, Steve was far more professional than Bai Luo. The two of them, known as the Silent Ridge Investigation Duo, first arrived at the nearest town to ask about the situation and indeed made some progress.
He was an old man in his seventies or eighties, completely bald, with a face that was white from head to beard. However, when he heard Bai Luo ask about Silent Ridge, his expression changed.
Under the persistent questioning of Bai Luo and Steve, he hesitated for a while before finally speaking up.
To be honest, during this process, Bai Luo felt as if he were in a scene from an old tomb-raiding movie, seeking out an elderly man for information about the past.
But the reputation of bald men in the Marvel universe for having valuable information held true.
This bald old man actually revealed quite a bit of useful information. Initially, the Kansas State Government planned to build a new town on the site of Silent Ridge.
Bai Luo thought to himself, was the Kansas State Government planning to develop tourism using ghost culture?
However, it was clear that the Kansas State Government would be disappointed. They discovered that overnight, a complete building had risen from the freshly laid foundation, and it appeared extremely ancient, as if it were decades old. Soon after, people began to die, and vengeful spirits roamed freely. A series of horror movie scenarios unfolded, leading the Kansas State Government to hastily halt their construction plans and start planting trees frantically around the pit. The suddenly appearing ancient building was soon obscured by foliage.
As for how this old man knew all this, it was because he had been one of the construction workers at the time.
To be honest, when Bai Luo heard this part, he felt something was off—wasn’t this reminiscent of Chinese tomb-raiding plots?
Could it be that the tone had suddenly shifted... and he was about to enter a new filming location?
Bai Luo might have been complaining internally, but he didn’t miss a single word of what the old man said.
The old man claimed that although Silent Ridge had been taken away, that building might serve as a passage left behind on Earth. It would only reveal its true form when night fell. If they wanted to do something, it would be best to set out in the evening.
Of course, Bai Luo wanted to do something.
Silent Ridge is the Demon's Lair, existing between reality and illusion, with two layers of worlds filled with countless monsters and dark entities.
In the original storyline of Silent Ridge, it was situated on Toluca Lake, but now it has appeared in Kansas, and the narrative has clearly changed.
Bai Luo and Steve had been staying in this town for half a day, ready to set off at dusk.
One of the characteristics of Silent Ridge is its liminality between reality and fantasy. Bai Luo thought that if Bai Chu's disappearance was somehow connected to Silent Ridge, and if the remaining building still held remnants of its power, he might seize this opportunity to find his older sister.
Thus, on this dark and windy night, Steve drove Bai Luo to the edge of the forest left behind after Silent Ridge vanished.
As night fell, a thin mist rose in the air; it was not truly silent but rather filled with the sounds of insects. The cold and damp atmosphere created an even more terrifying sensation.
At that moment, Steve suddenly heard a series of eerie unknown whistling sounds beside him. Startled, he turned his head to look.
Bai Luo was walking ahead, humming a tune as he ventured deeper into the woods: "Two tigers, climbing up the mountain to catch an old ghost. The old ghost wasn't caught, leaving blood all over the ground."
