Chapter 111: Reincarnator... Reincarnator!
Professor Charles's first words were, "Lorna Dane has been kidnapped."
Bai Luo's first reaction was "What the hell," but he kept it to himself, merely grunting a couple of times.
Charles seemed a bit puzzled by Bai Luo's response, but his mind was clearly focused on Lorna, so he didn't pay much attention. Instead, he continued, "About two hours ago, two agents from S.H.I.E.L.D. took her away. They were looking for Lorna because of some issues... I used my abilities—you know, my powers—to confirm their identities. However, I wasn't present when S.H.I.E.L.D. arrived. I conducted my investigation afterward, but it was too late; Lorna had already vanished—she's not with you, is she?"
The professor was not omniscient.
Bai Luo was genuinely taken aback this time. He replied, "No, I didn't send anyone from S.H.I.E.L.D. to pick her up."
Before the professor could respond, Sadako, who resided within Bai Luo, calmly interjected, "Do you need me to tell you? That was me who sent them; I intended to discuss our marriage with her."
Bai Luo: "..."
Sadako sighed and said, "I'll go talk to him."
Bai Luo: "..."
Then there was a long silence on the phone.
Charles's slightly doubtful voice soon broke the silence: "So... this person claiming to be Shan Village Sadako is one of yours?"
Bai Luo responded with a simple "Mm."
In New York, Charles looked at the half-real, half-virtual image of Sadako before him and joked, "Bai, you really are a mysterious figure."
Then he communicated with Sadako mentally, saying, "So... what happened to Bai? Do you need to talk to me?"
"In short, he has fallen for someone," Sadako replied coldly.
Their exchange was entirely mental, swift and silent.
Bai Luo waited for a moment before Charles spoke again, "Bai, given the situation, I suspect that whoever targeted Lorna is likely after you. The only connection between Lorna and S.H.I.E.L.D. is you, and they are using your name. I will keep this matter from Eric for now. I hope you can handle it properly. Lorna is a good kid; she’s different from Eric. I hope..."
Charles paused, implying that Lorna got involved because of him, and he needed to resolve this matter thoroughly.
Bai Luo felt a bit frustrated being unable to speak.
However, he had a good impression of Lorna. Whether before or after his journey, this Polaris Sister had some unlikable traits and a bad temper, but she was a good person.
Previously in the hospital, she stayed by his side not just because she had nowhere else to go after being brought by Bai Luo.
As the conversation with Charles ended, Sadako provided Bai Luo with more detailed information.
The incident began two or three days ago when Lorna went out with a friend who was also a mutant from Charles's school. They encountered a group claiming to be from S.H.I.E.L.D., and Bai Luo needed Lorna's help. They talked about human peace and world safety, and thus... Lorna was easily persuaded to go along.
Upon hearing this, Bai Luo couldn't help but feel puzzled—when did the Polaris Sister become so gullible?
After that, Lorna went missing. She was supposed to call the school once she arrived in Washington, but the call never came. Charles initially thought something serious had happened and used his abilities to scan the area, only to realize something was off.
Lorna had already vanished without a trace.
Bai Luo tugged at the corner of his mouth, thinking that this kind of plot was rather cliché.
Charles's judgment was indeed correct. Just a second later, Bai Luo received a phone call, and the caller had directly reached the room that S.H.I.E.L.D. had arranged for him.
The other party was much more "generous" than Bai Luo had imagined. They opened with, "Hello, Mr. Bai, I am a member of Hydra. We recently invited your fiancée, Ms. Lorna, and now we would like to invite you to come and visit."
Upon hearing this, Bai Luo pondered for a moment and replied, "You have quite the audacity to openly identify yourselves as Hydra."
While Bai Luo said this, what was conveyed on the other end was clearly something different. The person on the line seemed momentarily stunned, lost in thought for a brief moment before responding, "You can rest assured about that; Ms. Lorna's safety will definitely be guaranteed. We simply wish for you to see our latest... research results out of some psychological inclination. However, as a gesture of goodwill for the sincerity you have shown us, we hope you can come alone."
"Research results?" Bai Luo hesitated slightly before saying, "Alright, where and when?"
This time, the content of Bai Luo's words seemed unaffected by any System penalties. The caller quickly provided a precise location and time.
It was an abandoned warehouse located in Ohio, USA, scheduled for tonight. Clearly, Hydra was still concerned that if they set a longer meeting time, Bai Luo might encounter various complications.
After hanging up the phone, Bai Luo contemplated for a moment before instructing Mizumura Memeko to call Abomination.
— He still had an undercover agent within Hydra; asking him what was going on might be a good choice.
However, Bai Luo would likely be disappointed this time.
The call connected, and Abomination's attitude was decent, but he didn't have any useful information either. According to his perspective, Hydra's level of trust in him was pitifully low; after such a long time, they still only allowed him to do peripheral work.
This was inevitable; since Pierce had learned about his previous conversation with Bai Luo early on, he would naturally be more cautious regarding this yellow Hulk's allegiance.
With no news from Abomination either, Bai Luo could only sigh internally as he packed his things and quietly prepared to set off.
Now that Bai Luo was free and there was nothing requiring his involvement, stepping out was quite easy for him.
But just as Bai Luo was about to step out, he received a long-awaited System notification.
【Dear Host, there are thirty seconds until the Reincarnator arrives at the battlefield.】
Bai Luo's foot hovered in mid-air as he paused, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. He quickly realized that this likely meant the plot of the Avengers was about to unfold. After a moment's thought, he decided to send Nick a text message: "What are you researching with the Cosmic Cube? Take a break for now."
Nick replied in surprise, "How did you know I was developing the Cosmic Cube?"
This was also why Bai Luo hadn't messaged earlier—after all, Nick hadn't told him anything, so how could he remind him?
Looking at Nick's message, Bai Luo could only sigh internally and quietly step outside.
What Bai Luo didn't expect was that just two hours later, after arriving in Ohio, he would receive another System notification!
