Chapter 13: White disaster
After a long time, Qin Sword and the others were able to understand Mongolian and communicate with them. Because there was little food on the grassland, the army's diet and lifestyle had to change.
Milk, horse milk, beef, and mutton... have become everyone's daily diet, and even most of the warriors have learned to ride horses, shoot arrows, and wield sabres on horseback.
People from both sides visiting each other has also become a common occurrence.
After the last failed night raid, the Tatar people and the scornful child begging from others have temporarily stopped. They believe that everything is the decision of Changshengtian, and they cannot go against it.
But the Jin people are different. They believe that as long as they persist in the spirit of ants gnawing at a camel, they can destroy those headless monsters, of course, at a certain cost.
From the beginning of autumn to the beginning of winter, the Jin people sent multiple cavalry units to harass and plunder. While they had some success with other tribes, the Ye Suge and his Begging for recognition or appreciation tribe proved to be the toughest nut to crack.
Initially, Wanyan Hutu attempted to use the good mobility of light cavalry and employ hit-and-run tactics. However, they underestimated the "messengers of Changshengtian" in the eyes of the Mongolian people. Even when they urged their Warhorse as fast as shooting stars, several snipers led by Xu Chengcai could bring down Jin cavalry with just a single shot.
The Jin people also attempted to use bows and arrows to clear a path and launch a group charge, then surround these monsters, using knives, spears, fire, and trampling with horses, even biting with their teeth... but these monsters never gave them a chance to get close. Their strongest hard bows only had a range of two to three hundred yards, still beyond the range of two or three arrows, and the "fire-spitting sticks" could easily kill their knights.
Over time, the Jin people also retreated.
The grassland is too vast, and it is impossible for the strength of a mere company of over a hundred people to conquer everything and achieve the unification of Mongolia.
However, they created an extraordinary myth, that the Mongolian Kerait tribe's Ye Suge received the protection of Changshengtian, and he will eventually be the greatest Khan on this grassland.
Even the bravest shepherd dog can only fight against four-legged animals, but with the protection of "Changshengtian's messenger," not only are there no longer wolves with four legs, but also no two-legged people dare to encroach on the pastures and livestock of the Begging for recognition or appreciation tribe.
The small tribe rescued by Qin Sword from water and fire, has recuperated within a few months. The elderly in their tribe, Maasai Mara, kneel and pray to Changshengtian, thanking him for the protection brought by his messengers!
As winter comes, there are no more human disasters, but there are natural calamities.
A heavy snowfall characterized by large and fluffy snowflakes lasted for a full three days, with the snow reaching a depth of one meter and covering 98% of the grassland with a layer of snow 40 centimeters deep.
On the grassland, there is a saying of "White disaster" and "black disaster". "White disaster" refers to the heavy snow covering the grassland, making it difficult for livestock to find food; while "black disaster" refers to the lack of snow or even no snow on the grassland in winter, leaving the livestock without water to drink, leading to a decrease in condition and even causing large numbers of deaths.
Moreover, on the grassland, the outbreak of one disaster often leads to a chain reaction of other disasters, such as the outbreak of epidemic diseases following the large-scale death of livestock.
Here, herders have always had the habit of reserving pasture grass to guard against the "White disaster," but this time the snow is just too heavy, and no one knows if the reserved pasture grass can last until the snow and ice melt.
The elderly in the Maasai Mara tribe almost come to bother the "Qin Sword," the "Changshengtian's messenger," for help almost every day.
Not only him, even Ye Suge of the Begging for recognition or appreciation tribe and his people are also in distress.
You see, once the pasture grass becomes unsustainable, a large portion of these grazing animals such as cows, sheep, horses, and camels will starve to death. By the time the herders endure until the warmth of spring in the following year, there will be no sheep to shear, no cows to milk, no horses to ride, and no camels to carry... At that time, whichever tribe survives this "white disaster" will be the king of the grassland.
