As Gu Ping returned, he pushed the door open and saw Liu Donghui standing at the entrance, speaking with Yang Yan about something that seemed to involve a request to go out.
"What’s going on?"
"Emperor Dong summoned the princess; there must be something he wants to discuss," Liu Donghui replied directly on behalf of Yang Yan.
Gu Ping thought to himself that he probably had no right to speak for the princess.
He stared at Liu Donghui, unsure of what the emperor wanted with Yang Yan. In his mind, Gu Ping speculated that Liu Donghui felt it was better to keep some distance from Yang Yan, so he informed Jin Huang about the situation, leading to Jin Huang summoning Yang Yan to the palace for a few days. In a few months, perhaps he would find himself lying dead in the streets.
Yang Yan furrowed her brows and said, "If my father called for him, it’s likely..."
"Right, he also wants to meet Yi Dong, my father. He probably needs to have a talk with Emperor Dong," she added with a chuckle.
Seeing Gu Ping's calm expression, Yang Yan realized that he wasn't joking or being irrational; he was simply considering what Liu Donghui had already thought through.
"Do I have any leverage now?" Gu Ping shook his head.
"What trump card do I have?" He shook his head again.
"Then am I just looking for death?" Yang Yan's tone rose as she angrily exclaimed.
Gu Ping spread his legs calmly and replied, "No one has absolute certainty. Moreover, given the current situation, one could gamble on Yi Dong; there might be a glimmer of hope. If you lose, you face death directly."
Hearing Gu Ping's words, everyone present was taken aback. Liu Lao Jiu realized that the sixteen-year-old boy before him had grown up; he now understood the importance of choices, recognized the complexities of situations, and knew how to respond to the impending crises. Meanwhile, I don't deny, crouched in the corner, was crying, wishing for Gu Ping to become more familiar.
Yang Yan turned her head again to look at Liu Lao Jiu. Seeing him nod at her, she then glanced at Zhuang Zhixian, who was deep in thought. At that moment, Liu Donghui tugged at Yi Dong and Yang Yan's sleeves, also nodding at Yang Yan.
"Let's change into the Abyssal Guards' uniforms and go meet His Majesty together."
Upon hearing this, Gu Ping closed his eyes and took a deep breath, slowly adjusting his state of mind. He knew that life and death hinged on that one meeting with Jin Huang; whether he could obtain what he desired depended on it.
What Gu Ping didn't know was that as soon as he stepped out, someone was already at the door looking for him.
"Is anyone there?" Hong Ling knocked hard on the door twice. After a long wait with no response, she felt puzzled. "Doesn't that guy named Gu Ping know they came looking for him?"
"Who knows?" Hong Yulong shrugged, appearing indifferent. "You can run from the first day of the month but not from the fifteenth; we will meet eventually. When that time comes, it will depend on whose strength is greater."
"Should we force our way in and grab him?" A glint of mischief flashed in Hong Ling's eyes as she looked at Hong Yulong with a playful smile.
"Not really; after all, that's the Princess Mansion. The Great Jin Royal Family isn't as simple as it seems."
"Are we just going to let it go? This could be a perfect opportunity to catch that guy."
Hong Ling pouted slightly, expressing her reluctance as she spoke to Hong Yulong. Deep down, she wanted to see Hong Yulong storm into the Princess Mansion and deal with those who resisted until they begged for mercy.
"I'll knock again; maybe someone will come out."
With some reluctance, Hong Ling went back to knock on the door twice more. When no one answered again, she felt like Hong Yulong was laughing at her. Just as she turned around to complain to him, a maid opened a crack in the door and peeked out.
The maid glanced at the two individuals standing at the door. Although she had rarely seen them before, their attire and demeanor made it clear that they were not ordinary people. Being polite, she addressed Hong Ling, "May I ask what brings you here, Miss?"
"Is my princess available?" Hong Ling asked directly, considering the maid's silence a courtesy that eased some of her irritation.
Unfortunately, the princess had been summoned to the palace by Emperor Dong.
"Oh, has anyone visited my residence recently?"
The maid hesitated, recalling Yang Yan's instructions from a few days ago not to disclose any information about the young man and the middle-aged man. It seemed that was the intent behind those orders. So she shook her head and replied, "The princess has been at the residence these past few days, and no one has come to visit."
"I see. Please inform my princess that Hong Ling from Sky's End Tower came to pay a visit. I will return." After speaking, Hong Ling exchanged a knowing glance with Hong Yulong, and the two turned to leave.
Once the maid closed the door, she remembered Yang Yan's instructions and quickly summoned a guard from the residence. She asked him to deliver a message to Yang Yan to prevent any issues that might arise and avoid incurring Yang Yan's displeasure towards Dong Lai; she was just a small maid and couldn't bear such consequences.
The guard set off toward the palace without noticing that two figures were following him—none other than Hong Ling and Hong Yulong.
From the maid's hesitant expression, Hong Ling could tell that she was concealing something. If the princess was not at the residence, someone would surely be sent to report it. At that point, it would be easy for them to follow whoever went to deliver the news and find their target.
Gu Ping secretly observed the Great Jin palace, comparing it with Liu Xia's palace.
