"I don't deny it," Chen said. He wouldn't save me anyway; what benefit would he gain from saving me? Gu Ping glanced at Chen Minghua, who blinked in response, causing Chen Minghua to feel a bit embarrassed. He turned his gaze away, unable to keep quiet.
Those people probably weren't here to find me, right? Tomorrow during dinner, would I intentionally provoke him? It wasn't like I was hiding my strength or anything. That Talisman he asked about was just an ordinary item; I was afraid he might report me to the Law Enforcement Hall, claiming I came to the academy as a spy.
What a clever woman, Gu Ping thought to herself as she lit the Illumination Stone in the room. She knew too much and feared he might resort to killing to silence her.
"Gu Brother, please don't," Chen Minghua urged, unsure of Gu Ping's true abilities. He felt that after just surviving a Great War, Huo Lian must be mistaken about Gu Ping's intentions.
Gu Ping and Huo Lian exchanged glances. For the first time, Huo Lian noticed that there was nothing in the eyes of the person before him. Although she was clearly looking at him, there was not a hint of emotional fluctuation—like staring at an object. Even when looking at something one liked, emotions would show; yet this person displayed none. Was she even human?
"I'm scared," Gu Ping chuckled softly and shook her head. She wasn't a spy; what mattered more was that her master didn't see her as one. Since her master had taken her in, he wouldn't think of her as a spy. Even if she were one, her master would still consider her a useful asset. What could the Law Enforcement Hall do about that?
Upon hearing Gu Ping's words, the two beside her fell silent. They all knew that within the academy, aside from those Ancestors and Grand Ancestors, their master's word was law in Mok Ming Academy. Since their master believed Gu Ping should enter the academy, no one would dare cause trouble for her.
Huo Lian looked at Gu Ping and said, "I'm strong and look forward to meeting you again at the Outer Academy Martial Arts Exhibition. By then, I won't hold back."
Gasping, if it weren't for him, my chances of becoming a True Disciple were quite promising. Bu Luo's True Disciple would definitely be his. Gu Ping opened the door and escorted the two out of the courtyard.
How do I know him?
On their way back, Huo Lian asked Chen Minghua about it. Chen Minghua knew of the elder's reputation; although she usually thought that guy was a bit foolish, Cigarette Paper seemed much more appealing now. After all, that guy had rushed in without regard for his life to save her from Dong Lai—she truly felt grateful for him.
I said to my junior brother Xuanming, noticing that he seemed quite lonely. I wanted him to integrate into the academy quickly, so I decided to accompany him to the library. Unexpectedly, he pulled out a piece of Agarwood, which seemed quite valuable. He was worried that those people would come looking for trouble tomorrow morning, so he came to check on things and happened to run into me.
After hearing what Chen Minghua said, Huo Lian turned completely red. That guy really had been plotting against him during dinner. He thought to himself that once he seized the opportunity, he would definitely make that guy pay. The few individuals from the library wouldn’t escape; they all deserved to suffer for daring to engage in such activities in the Outer Court. Had they really been in the academy for too long?
That guy, I don’t deny it; it’s better to have less contact with him. If I’m not careful, I might end up being sold out without even realizing it. Huo Lian returned to his residence with a cold expression, reminding himself of this.
Why did what he said sound so much like what Junior Brother Xuanming had said? Chen Minghua pondered as he turned to leave. Tomorrow morning would surely be nerve-wracking for him. He collapsed onto his bed and fell asleep, clearly exhausted.
The next day, when Chen Minghua woke up, the sun was already bright. Realizing he was late, he hurried toward his intended classroom but found someone sitting in his seat—none other than Huo Lian. This made Chen Minghua feel somewhat awkward, so he randomly chose another spot.
Just as he settled down, a voice rang in his ear. “So, what did he say? Did you strike it lucky?”
Chen Minghua turned around and saw Gu Ping leaning on the desk, wearing that extremely lewd grin from last night. Even Huo Lian glanced over but didn’t seem to notice.
“Please don’t tell me that guy is in danger because of Huo Shijie,” Chen Minghua thought anxiously.
He couldn’t forget that he had told her how formidable she was; if something happened, he would also bear some responsibility.
The two exchanged a few words before class began. Chen Minghua had arrived far too late and ended up bickering with Gu Ping without hearing anything from the Dao Heart lecture given by Teacher Zhou. As Huo Lian walked over under everyone’s gaze, Chen Minghua suddenly became the center of attention, causing him to blush awkwardly.
“I didn’t hear what Teacher Zhou just taught about Dao Heart,” he thought. “I’ll find a place in the library later and ask him to explain it again.”
Um...
Chen Minghua hesitated as Gu Ping quickly nudged him forward, urging him to follow Huo Lian while she headed toward the Dan Hall. She thought it might be worth checking out since she wanted to see if Liu Shizu’s comment about her being suitable for alchemy was true or not. If she could find an elder at the Dan Hall for a test, she could verify whether Liu Shizu’s words were genuine or not—perhaps she could glean some insights along the way.
