"Hey, do you have a twin brother lost out there? You two look too much alike!"
From a distance, Wenxin stared at the young man bowing before King Zhou, her mind momentarily blank. She had never imagined that there could be two people in the world who resembled each other so closely, filled with shock and confusion.
Beside her, Guan Xue also gazed at Bo Yikao in a daze. After a long pause, he sighed, "His name is Bo Yikao, the one in the portrait of my sister."
"What?" Is it really him?
Wenxin was taken aback and looked towards Su Daji, who stood next to Lu Tai alongside King Zhou. She was staring at Bo Yikao with an almost obsessive gaze, her intense and passionate look made even Wenxin, the observer, blush. It seemed that the person in the painting was indeed Bo Yikao without a doubt.
He has finally appeared, so… Guan Xue suddenly smiled and grasped Wenxin's hand. Wenxin felt a bit embarrassed and struggled, but he held on tighter. "I ask you this: if I were to disappear from this world, would you be sad?"
Wenxin was bewildered by the question and then raised her fist in a mock threat. "What are you planning to do? Are you going to leave me all alone? I warn you, if you dare to go missing, I will… I will kill your precious sister Daji!"
Guan Xue smiled charmingly. "Sister wouldn't even harm you; you little girl don't have that capability!"
Feeling embarrassed, Wenxin quickly returned to the main topic. "Why are you asking me such a strange question?"
"I hope you can help me make a decision."
"What decision?"
"I've already made it." Guan Xue squeezed Wenxin's soft little hand. It was hard to let go of such an adorable girl; his heart was filled with affection.
"What?" Wenxin was completely out of sorts, her face filled with confusion.
Guan Xue raised a hand and ruffled Wenxin's hair. "Be good. Wait for me to come back. I have something to take care of these days—promise me you won't ask anything. If I don't return, just... do whatever you want."
Why did this seemingly "last words" sound so much like a game to her? Wenxin felt annoyed and swatted Guan Xue's hand away. "You better come back!"
"Alright, for you, I will definitely come back."
Perhaps influenced by Guan Xue's "last words," Wenxin felt restless for several days, unable to sit still, a sense of unease and worry gnawing at her heart.
As night fell and the lights flickered, Wenxin propped her chin on her hand, staring at the tiny flames, her gaze gradually becoming hazy.
In a daze, she seemed to hear Guan Xue calling her from behind. She quickly stood up and turned around, only to see a sea of flames, the fire licking everything ferociously. And there was Guan Xue, dressed in flowing white robes like an immortal, trapped in the raging inferno.
She tried to call out to him but found her voice had gone hoarse; no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't make a sound.
Her heart raced with anxiety, almost bringing her to tears as she watched Guan Xue suffering in the flames, quickly engulfed by the fire...
Seeing Guan Xue like a withered flower made her heart ache with urgency. She wanted to rush into the fire and share life and death with him. Unfortunately, even that seemed impossible; with each step she took forward, the sea of flames retreated along with Guan Xue...
Finally, Guan Xue's figure began to shrink until he transformed into a pure white Three-Tailed Silver Fox.
"Guan Xue!"
Wenxin finally shouted, jolting awake as her forehead collided painfully with the table leg. She realized she had fallen asleep without noticing, and everything that had just transpired was merely a nightmare.
Yet, despite being just a dream, why did her heart feel so heavy?
Unable to contain herself any longer, Wenxin stood up and rushed like the wind toward Su Daji's palace.
She thought that Su Daji must know where Guan Xue had gone.
To her surprise, the usually heavily guarded palace was completely empty. Even the inner hall, which was always brightly lit, appeared dim and dull at this moment, like a pearl that had lost its brilliant luster.
Wenxin hesitated in her heart and slowly pushed the door open. She faintly heard the sound of a woman sobbing softly, which made her increasingly anxious. She hurried into one of the chambers and saw Su Daji slumped beside the bed, tightly clutching a Silk Scroll in her hands, weeping quietly with sorrow and despair evident in her cries.
Wenxin's heart tightened as she instantly recalled the historical records—Su Daji had caused Bo Yikao's death. She felt a heaviness in her chest and hesitated for a long time before finally asking, "Bo Yikao... he..."
Su Daji slowly lifted her head, appearing almost deranged as she murmured, "He is dead... because of me... I only wanted to see him once... I never expected King Zhou would want to kill him, using him to warn Marquis Xibo..."
Her eyes drooped weakly as her thoughts drifted back many years to Gaojing, where the young Bo Yikao had bought an injured white fox from a hunter and cared for it tenderly on the back mountain until it healed. Only then did he return the fox to the wild.
She would never have the chance to tell Bo Yikao that she was that white fox, the one who desperately transformed into a human for him.
