Things are different now. This is human territory, and in this Era of Sequence, what humans have in abundance is fear.
As the movie began to play, Yelai twitched his nose. Due to the cost of absorbing fear, he was particularly sensitive to it, able to smell the fear of others. At that moment, he detected that the film had just started, and some people in the audience were beginning to feel a tension that stemmed from fear.
These emotions wafted off them like scents, floating into Yelai's nostrils. It was akin to a starving ghost catching a whiff of food, like spirits during the Ghost Festival drawn to the scent of incense and offerings.
Yelai absorbed the fear emanating from those present. Among them, one particular scent of fear was the strongest and most enticing. Following its trail, he turned his head to glance at the Timid Girl beside him.
This potent aroma of fear was radiating from her. Just as her two friends had said, she truly was very timid; upon seeing the images of Unknown Horror on screen, she immediately became frightened.
Yelai looked down at his hand resting next to hers. Due to her timid nature, not only did she become scared, but she instinctively gripped the armrest tightly. In her heightened state of anxiety and fear, she didn’t realize that what she was clutching wasn’t the armrest but rather Yelai’s hand resting on it.
She held onto Yelai’s hand tightly, eyes squeezed shut in terror, unwilling to look at the screen. Yelai took all this in and then reached out with his other hand to gently pat the back of her hand in a comforting gesture.
“Don’t be afraid; there’s nothing really scary about Unknown Horror. If you keep your eyes closed like that, you’ll miss out on all the exciting parts of the movie.”
The scent of fear surrounding her gradually faded as she kept her eyes shut. It is well known that closing one’s eyes during an Unknown Horror film is one of the best ways to avoid being scared.
"Ah? Yes, I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention."
The sensation on the back of her hand, combined with the voice of Yelai in her ear, made the Timid Girl instinctively open her eyes. In an instant, her face flushed red. She hurriedly tried to pull her hand back.
Yet deep down, she felt nervous and her heart raced. Oh my gosh! What am I doing? This is so embarrassing! How did I end up holding someone else's hand? And it's him! He won't think I'm a creep, will he?
She recalled her earlier blunders of closing her eyes and losing composure. The girl felt so awkward that she wished she could find a hole to hide in.
But before she could think too much, Yelai reassured her, "It's normal to be scared. If you're afraid, you can hold my hand. Watching a horror movie is like this; the more you watch, the less scared you become. I used to feel the same way."
Yelai didn't care about her embarrassing outburst. He just wanted her to keep her eyes open; once she closed them, her fear would lessen and fade away.
Her cheeks were still flushed. "No, you hold on. If you're really scared, you can hug my arm too. It’s okay; I've heard that holding onto something helps relieve stress."
Yelai lifted the armrest between them with a charming and warm smile. He was willing to pay any price for this moment! Just like how one can only truly appreciate the aroma of food up close, Yelai wanted to be closer to the scent of fear; he just wanted the girl to keep her eyes open.
He thought to himself, "The price is all on you!"
While Yelai was determined to pay his price, things were different from the girl's perspective. To Yelai, his smile conveyed a message: as long as you keep your eyes open, you can do whatever you want. But to her, it looked like he was saying not to be afraid and offering warmth.
In that moment, faced with Yelai's efforts...
Her face flushed with shyness. Her heart raced wildly. Oh my! Could it be that he really has feelings for me? At this moment, not only was she thinking about getting to know Yelai, but she had even named their future children.
