Vice Captain gazed towards Hu Family Village.
Qianfeng thought that although some of them were a bit twisted, their efficiency was still high. Given that so much time had passed, it was unlikely they hadn't contacted them yet. Even if they hadn't found 【Gaze】, they should have notified them about the lack of findings by now.
He couldn't believe that at this point, Qianfeng couldn't figure out that they had led Zhang Yinlin and the others to Hu Family Village. This forced him to consider the worst-case scenario. The Second Squad led by Qianfeng had likely encountered misfortune. No, it should be that all of them were in grave danger. Otherwise, with their usual style, if they really ran into trouble, they would definitely have sent someone to Zhong Zhi for help.
Zhong Zhi’s face was as dark as thunderclouds.
The thoughts that Vice Captain had were not lost on him; he just didn't want to think about it. The Second Squad was a team he had painstakingly nurtured in the Safe Zone. If they were lost here, it would be a huge blow to him when they returned to the Numbered Protection Zone. No matter how unwilling he was to think about it, he still had to face reality.
He decided to try contacting them again; if he still couldn't reach them, they would have to go back.
"Everyone, pull yourselves together and search carefully for any signs of Qianfeng and the others. If you see anything or hear from them, let me know."
Zhong Zhi pressed his fingers against his forehead and rubbed it gently.
In truth, losing Qianfeng and the Second Squad would be a loss, but at least Zhang Yinlin and their group would also be dead. If the entire Second Squad replaced Zhang Yinlin, it would be a gain for them; at worst, they would break even. Once they returned to the Numbered Protection Zone, they could train another team.
Once back, they would deal with Yelai, and then they could return to the Numbered Protection Zone.
The reassurance from Vice Captain eased some of Zhong Zhi’s agitation. He spoke in a low voice, "Once we get back, kill Yelai immediately."
The thought of returning to the Numbered Protection Zone made Zhong Zhi feel restless; he didn't want to stay in the Safe Zone, let alone linger here any longer.
Time passed slowly, each tick of the clock a torment. Zhong Zhi felt the last remnants of his thoughts dissipate.
"Let’s head back to the Safe Zone. If Qianfeng and the others haven’t been killed by Gaze, they should be able to return on their own. We need to take care of business first." He scanned the team members present.
"A Feng, you pick someone to find Yelai. Kill him and report back to me." As for the others, Zhang Yinlin and the rest might not all be dead; there could still be some alive on their way back.
However, those left at the entrance of the Safe Zone hadn’t contacted them, so they likely hadn’t returned yet. They needed to hurry back and see if they could intercept them.
Zhong Zhi's voice turned cold as he spoke. "Remember, if you encounter them, leave no one behind."
He wasn’t worried about them getting back first. When Zhang Yinlin and his group had disembarked to walk towards Hu Family Village earlier, he had tampered with all the vehicles, rendering them inoperable.
The engines roared to life as Zhong Zhi climbed into the off-road vehicle he had parked on the hillside. The First Squad set off in a grand procession.
Following their prearranged plan, they drove along until they reached a crucial road leading back to the Safe Zone, where they patiently awaited the arrival of what remained of Zhang Yinlin's group.
Time flew by.
In the afternoon, at Hu Family Village's entrance.
They were back!
The team members waiting at the village entrance stood under the scorching afternoon sun, eagerly watching for any sign of Uncle Zhou and his group’s return.
At the entrance of the village, Yelai and Zhang Yinlin stood on the concrete road.
"What are they doing?" Uncle Zhou wondered aloud. "Am I seeing things, or is that a cat? Is there really time to pet a cat right now?"
"This is Rank Six's Sequence?" he continued, incredulous. "They're fighting an Incorporeal Anomalous Entity and still have time to rescue a kitten?"
The team members stood in shock as they led the children up to join Zhang Yinlin and the others. Their eyes were immediately drawn to Yelai, who was the center of attention.
He cradled a Small Orange Cat in his arms, which was stuffed inside a white plastic bag. The bag was opaque but allowed some light to filter through, and from the outline, everyone recognized it was indeed a Small Orange Cat.
It seemed to be the darling of the group.
Zhang Yinlin and Uncle Zhou occasionally glanced at the little cat inside the plastic bag.
