"Brother Ye Lai, can I pet the little cat?"
Ya Ya tilted her head back. Being petite, she had to stand on her tiptoes, her hands gripping Ye Lai's arm as she stretched her neck to get a better look at the Small Orange Cat in his arms.
"Ya Ya, come down."
Zhang Yinlin was startled. Uncle Zhou and Captain Wu were equally taken aback.
Ya Ya was very close to the plastic bag, almost pressing her face against it. While the others were oblivious to what the little cat was, they knew all too well; they had learned from Ye Lai on their way back.
The Small Orange Cat was an Incorporeal class Anomalous Entity known as Gaze.
"Teacher Zhang, I want to touch that cat; it's even smaller than my cat at home."
"You can't touch that cat, little one."
"And you all too, stay away from that cat."
As Squad Captain swiftly picked up Ya Ya, he looked as if he wanted to avoid it at all costs, moving far away from the small cat. The team members and children were left bewildered by his sudden reaction.
Logically speaking, even if it was a stray cat and dirty with bacteria, there shouldn't be such a huge reaction, right?
"Why can't I touch it?" The innocent Ya Ya asked curiously. "I often pet my cat at home."
She felt the gazes of everyone on her.
The Squad Captain didn't hide the truth; holding Ya Ya, he uttered a chilling statement.
"It’s not a cat; that's an Anomalous Entity known as Gaze."
Like a stone thrown into a still pond, this revelation sent ripples through the group.
"What?!"
"Oh my God!"
The team members cursed in shock and all retreated, distancing themselves from Ye Lai.
"Captain, are you serious?" One team member swallowed hard. "That’s Gaze?"
Although the Squad Captain did not respond, the team members understood everything clearly. No wonder Uncle Zhou and the others looked apprehensive when they saw the Small Orange Cat.
I wondered why they were using a plastic bag instead of just holding it directly or wrapping it in clothing. The plastic bag was opaque but allowed light to pass through. This way, they could avoid the gaze of others and prevent being possessed, while also obscuring any movements inside the bag.
"Yelai, what are you planning to do with that?" a team member called out from a distance on their way back.
Whether it was Uncle Zhou, Zhang Yinlin, or anyone else, they all kept their distance from Yelai, none daring to approach. Despite being a large and bustling group, Yelai had forcibly created a vacuum around himself.
"I'm taking it back to raise it," Yelai said, revealing a set of pearly white teeth in a bright smile.
The team came to an abrupt halt. Except for a few who were in the know like Zhang Yinlin, everyone else stared at Yelai with wide eyes, as if they had seen a ghost.
"Yelai, stop messing around and be serious," someone urged.
Yelai insisted he wasn't joking. Uncle Zhou flicked his lighter and lit his cigarette without waiting for Yelai's response. He answered for Yelai instead.
The team members were momentarily stunned, their gazes fixed on Zhang Yinlin and the Squad Captain. Seeing both of them nod, it was clear they were conveying that Uncle Zhou's response was satisfactory, and indeed, Yelai had such an idea.
At that moment, compared to the team's bewilderment, the innocent children like Ya Ya wore expressions of admiration, their eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Wow! Brother Ye Lai is amazing; he even dares to raise that Anomalous Entity!"
"I can't believe it! I'm definitely going to scold my brother when I get back. I trusted his words and thought Brother Ye Lai was useless."
"I've decided not to talk to my dad for three days when I get home! Hmph! He tricked me!"
