Was Yelai able to control the Entity Sequence? Or perhaps, was it that the Gaze had been tamed by Yelai?
In that fleeting moment, the Vice Captain and the others were filled with countless doubts, with no one to provide answers. Zhang Tian had fallen. The Gaze possessed another team member.
The situation took everyone by surprise. Had they known beforehand that the Small Orange Cat was the Gaze, the Vice Captain and his team would never have engaged with it. But alas, the unexpected had occurred, and no one had anticipated it. They were caught off guard.
With this transformation, the Gaze became frenzied. It possessed a teammate and let out a series of inhuman screams, appearing quite exhilarated as it charged into the Vice Captain's group, unleashing ruthless slaughter. One team member found himself face-to-face with the Gaze.
The Gaze activated the Sequence Power of the possessed teammate, opening its mouth wide and biting off the entire head of that team member. It seemed to be thrilled—no, it was definitely thrilled.
At a distance, around a corner, Zhang Yinlin and the others saw Zhong Zhi and followed Yelai's instructions. They did not rush forward but instead chose to find cover and observe from a distance. Zhang Yinlin, Uncle Zhou, and the Fifth Squad Captain realized that compared to their earlier encounter with the Gaze in Hu Family Village, this time it was even more excited.
What they thought was indeed true. The Gaze was in a state of extreme excitement or rather, it was releasing its pent-up thrill. This was what it desired; as long as it had its sights set on prey, there would be no one who could resist it. It should not be beaten down or left battered; it should revel in the act of killing.
In just a few moments, the Gaze wreaked havoc, venting its frustrations from being beaten by Yelai.
Only three out of the original six remained. The Vice Captain was filled with terror. This plan was not supposed to unfold this way. They should have been the hunters, waiting for their prey, not the ones being hunted like lambs to the slaughter. Where had it all gone wrong?
Unlike their previous doubts, they did not need anyone else to provide answers; clarity dawned upon them immediately. The variable was Yelai. The entity known as Gaze displayed an unknown horror that Zhang Yinlin and the others could not easily contend with, let alone bring it to bear against them. Someone else was meant to deal with Gaze, and all signs pointed to Yelai being that individual.
Zhong Zhi realized this as well. He clutched the back of his head, blood streaming down his face. Yelai stared at Zhong Zhi, having severely injured him with a single blow. He chose not to press the attack further, allowing Zhong Zhi to escape and create distance between them. Zhong Zhi was sent by the Li Family; Yelai needed a live captive to extract information about those who had harmed him. That was why he had refrained from delivering a fatal blow earlier. Otherwise, with his Rank Six strength, even if Zhong Zhi were at Rank Five Sequence, he would have been dead.
On the other side, Zhong Zhi fixed his gaze on Yelai. Despite feeling an overwhelming sense of frustration and having seen their plans crumble, he had no choice but to retreat. Setting aside Yelai's strength for a moment, dealing with Gaze was beyond their capabilities.
Enduring the pain in his head, Zhong Zhi pulled a glass marble-sized eyeball from his waist pouch.
The whites of his eyes were completely bloodshot, appearing a deep crimson that was unsettling. The pupils, however, were an eerie pitch black, as if they were bottomless abysses that swallowed any light that dared to enter.
He opened his mouth and took the Eyeballs into his mouth.
In an instant, Zhong Zhi became transparent, starting from his mouth and spreading throughout his entire body.
It wasn't just him. The two Vice Captains he had grabbed on either side also began to turn transparent as the effect traveled down his arms to them.
In just a second or two, they seemed to vanish without a trace.
A Secret Artifact?
Yelai observed this with keen eyes, scanning the now empty surroundings. Aside from the confused Gaze tilting its head in bewilderment, there was no one else in sight.
