The surroundings were eerily empty. To be honest, if it weren't for the three corpses of the First Squad lying on the ground, it would seem as if Zhong Zhi had never been here at all.
"Stop it."
Yelai placed a hand on Gaze's shoulder.
Zhang Tian's body trembled violently as if he were a docile kitten, his fierce demeanor suddenly subdued, obediently standing in place.
The members of the Squad watching from a distance were dumbfounded. They couldn't reconcile the current Gaze with the ruthless, bloodthirsty Gaze from moments ago. It was as if they were looking at two different Anomalous Entities.
Many team members fell silent. Among them were those who had previously tried to persuade Uncle Zhou to stop Yelai from pursuing individual heroism, but now they remained speechless.
So Yelai had said he wanted to tame Gaze. But this was not taming; it was clear that he had already been domesticated.
At the same time, they realized why Uncle Zhou had insisted that Yelai face Zhong Zhi alone for their sake—because Gaze needed to be involved in the battle.
Recalling Gaze's Unknown Horror, they felt fortunate that they hadn't tried to persuade him to cooperate with the team. Otherwise, if they had gotten involved, they might have ended up being killed by their own teammate Gaze without even realizing it.
In that case, would they have called Gaze a liability? Or would they have labeled themselves as the liabilities for trying to push for cooperation?
But despite their musings, they did not forget that Zhong Zhi had escaped.
Before they could think about how to handle it, Yelai's voice came from afar.
"Yinlin, wait for me! I'm going after Zhong Zhi."
With that statement left hanging and without waiting for Zhang Yinlin and the others to respond, Yelai turned to look at Gaze and called out.
Gaze stood in place, tilting its head. It had just been tamed, and could not perfectly execute Yelai's commands, but the next moment, it saw Yelai raise a fist, and its expression turned menacing. Instantly, memories of being reprimanded by Yelai flooded back. It was like an instinctive reaction, or perhaps a conditioned reflex. Out of fear of Yelai, it mimicked the human's words and actions, closely following Yelai.
At that moment, its only instinct was to disguise itself by adhering to what the human said, hoping to avoid punishment. Pain—this is an instinct shared by most living beings.
Meanwhile, in the woods beside the road, Zhong Zhi led two teammates as they swiftly navigated through the trees, fleeing. The forest was dense, with only faint sunlight filtering through the gaps in the leaves, casting dappled spots of light on the ground.
"Zhong, what do we do now? The Safe Zone?" the Vice Captain asked, sweat beading on his forehead as he ran with all his might, glancing back occasionally with a look of fear on his face.
Zhong Zhi shook his head. With Eyeballs in his mouth, he couldn't speak but pointed in a direction that was not toward the Safe Zone. Instead, it led three miles away from the Safe Zone where they had secretly established a safe house for temporary refuge.
The Vice Captain understood but still expressed concern. "Isn't that safe house close to the road? What if Yelai comes looking for us?" He was genuinely frightened. The variable that was Yelai exceeded all expectations. Even though he knew that aside from him and Zhong Zhi, no one else knew about the safe house and that it was quite concealed, he also understood just how formidable Eyeballs could be when used properly.
After experiencing the previous incident with Yelai, where Zhong Zhi was seriously injured and faced the Gaze of fate, he now felt a wave of fear wash over him. Zhong Zhi remained silent, his gaze flickering uncertainly, equally hesitant to make any rash conclusions.
