A chilling, eerie laughter echoed in the air.
When Zhong Zhi finally saw who was approaching, it was Yelai.
In that moment, Zhong Zhi felt a surge of horror that made him want to curse. How could this be? Why was Yelai able to find them?
Given Yelai's rapid approach, he couldn't deny it—Yelai was ranked higher than him in the Sequence Rank. But this wasn't just a simple contest of speed. He had the Eyeballs, a Secret Artifact.
It was well-known that when chasing someone, the most crucial factor was knowing their location. Without that knowledge, no matter how fast one was, it wouldn't matter.
As he pondered this, a sudden thought struck Zhong Zhi. Did Yelai know where he was? No. That couldn't be possible. How could Yelai see through the invisibility effect of the Secret Artifact Eyeballs? Otherwise, how could he have found him?
With his past experiences of using the Secret Artifact Eyeballs to evade various dangers, Zhong Zhi was unwilling to believe that a mere Sequencer from the Safe Zone could see through the invisibility of the Eyeballs. It had to be a coincidence. No, it must be that Yelai was just bluffing.
That’s right. What Yelai said was merely a bluff, trying to make him think he was nearby. By shouting like that, he aimed to create panic and force him to reveal his position.
In an instant, Zhong Zhi stopped in his tracks and turned to run in another direction with his two companions, the Vice Captain. He was convinced that Yelai was just putting on a show; as for why he was chasing him, it could only be a coincidence—perhaps their escape route happened to align with Yelai's direction. All he needed to do was change course and avoid crossing paths with Yelai.
"Zhong, Yelai is coming after us!"
Just as he thought he had shaken off Yelai by changing direction, the Vice Captain exclaimed in horror.
Zhong Zhi turned his head to look back. He saw that Yelai, who had been chasing them north, suddenly veered and was now charging towards their current position in the east.
His pupils constricted. His heart felt like it was about to leap into his throat.
Is he coming after us again?
Zhong Zhi gritted his teeth in disbelief and changed direction once more. No matter how he twisted and turned to evade Yelai, it was as if Yelai had a tracking device on him; wherever he ran, Yelai would follow suit.
After several attempts, Zhong Zhi had no choice but to accept the reality. Yelai could find him thanks to the Eyeballs that were hiding him.
Meanwhile, Yelai wore a disturbingly twisted smile reminiscent of Cthulhu's grin. With each successive chase, the smile grew wider, and the glint of greed in his eyes seemed ready to spill over.
Zhong Zhi and his companions felt their souls leave their bodies at the sight. They believed that Yelai could see them and was relishing the thrill of the hunt, enjoying the chase like a cat playing with its prey.
That was what they thought.
However, at that moment, in Yelai's view, the area ahead was empty; aside from the trees and underbrush, there was nothing else—he couldn't see Zhong Zhi and his companions at all. But he could smell the overwhelming scent of fear emanating from them.
The fear radiating from Zhong Zhi and his friends was palpable.
The more they chased, the more fear gripped them, the scent of terror intensifying like a cup of milk tea transitioning from three parts sugar to five, then to seven. Such overwhelming dread felt like a potent tonic for Yelai. If only I could absorb this for three months, I should be able to elevate my Rank to Seven, Yelai muttered.
Unfortunately, while the thought was appealing, reality had other plans. Zhong Zhi couldn't possibly be chased for three consecutive months; just a few days of running would be enough to exhaust Zhong Zhi completely.
