It was strange. According to Zhong Zhi, Li Yanlin could not have instructed Zhong Zhi to kill him because of Luo Zhenxue. So why would Li Yanlin want him dead? Was his reasoning flawed?
In fact, the one who wanted him dead was not the Li Family, but rather other families within the Numbered Protection Zone. After all, among the initial invitees, there were those pursuing Luo Zhenxue. The invitees might have feared being discovered by Luo Zhenxue, so they sent Li Yanlin to handle things instead.
If that were the case, everything would make sense. But then again, it didn’t quite add up. He couldn’t believe that Luo Zhenxue’s three years of investigation wouldn’t reveal which family was behind it.
What about the relationship between Zhenxue and the Li Family faction led by Li Yanming? Yelai was filled with doubts and continued to ask questions.
Over the next period, he posed numerous inquiries to Zhong Zhi. Although Zhong Zhi's answers provided some useful information, they ultimately did not reveal who had wanted him dead three years ago.
This continued until Yelai asked his final question: “Is that all you know about the families behind the four people who invited Zhenxue? Are you sure there’s nothing else?”
His tone was chilling as he pressed his hand harder against Zhong Zhi's forehead. Tonight had yielded good results. Even if he hadn’t uncovered who had tried to kill him three years ago, at least he had confirmed that Li Yanlin wanted him dead.
He made a plan in his mind: once he finished dealing with matters here, he would head to the Numbered Protection Zone to meet up with Luo Zhenxue and find a way to capture Li Yanlin for interrogation.
“No, that’s all. I’m sure,” Zhong Zhi replied.
“Alright then.” Hearing Zhong Zhi's answer, Yelai’s lips curled into a strange smile as the Sequence Feature manifested. He was about to activate the Sequence when suddenly—
Perhaps it was the sight of Yelai's Sequence Feature, perhaps it was the fear of death, or perhaps it was the dread of falling back into a nightmare. Zhong Zhi, his face filled with terror, hurriedly shouted.
"Wait, wait! I have news about the Li Family."
"Speak."
"If I tell you, will you let me go? I can work for you like a servant. Please, just let me go. I've really told you everything I know."
"If you don't speak, I will kill you. If you do speak, I will consider whether to kill you or not. The choice is yours."
"I'll tell you, I'll tell you!" Zhong Zhi dared not negotiate any further and hesitated before continuing. "The news I have about the Li Family is just a rumor."
In a desperate bid to survive and avoid falling into a nightmare, Zhong Zhi had resorted to sharing even the smallest piece of information. He continued under Yelai's watchful gaze.
"I once heard someone say that the true Ruler of the Li Family is not human."
"Hmm?" Yelai's eyes narrowed as he focused intently on Zhong Zhi, questioning him word by word.
"Where did you get this rumor?"
To others, this might seem like mere gossip, but for Yelai, it was something different. "Not human? What do you mean?" Yelai pressed on without waiting for Zhong Zhi's response.
Before the Year of the Sequence, such news would have been dismissed as a joke. If it's not human, then what could it be? A ghost? A robot?
But in the Era of Sequence, things would be different. In this era, non-human entities abound—Entities, those lost to Sequence Side Effects known as Lost Ones, Believers who worshipped Entities as their masters, and so on.
Though they varied in type, they all had one thing in common: they were related to Sequence.
Yelai was certain that he did not know the Ruler of the Li Family. If the other party wasn't killing him because of Luo Zhenxue, then there was no reason for them to kill him; after all, he had been an ordinary person three years ago.
A Sequencer as a Ruler has no reason to concern themselves with ordinary people from the Distant Sanctuary.
But what if the Ruler is not human?
What if it is something related to the Sequence?
The outcome would be different.
To the Sequencer and ordinary people, he appears to be just an ordinary person, a "Broken Key." However, in the presence of other strange Sequence related entities, that perception may not hold true.
After all, his "Broken Key" can transform into a pitch-black color.
