Soon, Lu Zhengjun arrived at the foot of Dragon Ridge Mountain, taking the road along the south side instead of the northern path that passed through the village.
As soon as they got out of the car, the three of them jogged up the mountain, quickly leaving behind the area where the toxic gas was most concentrated. They gradually slowed their pace, breathing heavily. The makeshift gas masks they had created and the clothes wrapped around them were doing their job. Although they were still coughing, it wasn't as severe, and their skin showed no serious blisters.
Lu Xiaoran's house was at the top of the mountain, so they hurried onward. Lu Zhengjun turned around to call out to the other two. They had reached the halfway point of Dragon Ridge Mountain and continued upward without worrying about the dangers of toxic gas anymore. The three of them took off their gas masks and walked briskly toward the summit.
Meanwhile, at the northern part of the mountaintop where villagers gathered, a middle-aged woman ran breathlessly in front of Wang Fugui and said, "Director Wang, three people have come up from the slope on the south side; it seems they came from the foot of the mountain."
This middle-aged woman had just been digging wild herbs on the south slope to take home as food for the day. Glancing down the mountain, she spotted three figures emerging from the toxic gas and climbing steadily upward.
In a hurry, she ran over to report to Wang Fugui. Upon hearing her words, a look of surprise crossed his face as he asked her, "Did those people bring anything with them?"
After thinking for a moment, she replied, "Yes, I saw that each of them was carrying a large backpack."
Wang Fugui lowered his head in thought. He speculated that these individuals might be residents from nearby areas who knew that the concentration of toxic gas was lower at the mountaintop and had brought food from home to seek refuge.
The people from Dragon Ridge Village had already run out of food and could only survive by eating wild herbs and leaves; many were already emaciated. If they couldn't eat normal food soon, they wouldn't last much longer.
If he sent a few villagers to seize whatever food those newcomers had, they might be able to hold on a little longer. With this in mind, Wang Fugui called over several strong men and instructed them to go down the south slope to capture those three who were making their way up.
Before long, these men followed Wang Fugui's orders and headed down the slope. It wasn't long before they encountered Lu Zhengjun and his family climbing up.
Lu Zhengjun walked at the front and, looking at the few people behind him, asked with a puzzled expression, "Who are you? Do you live on the mountain too?"
The group ignored Lu Zhengjun and quickly approached, surrounding him and his companions.
Seeing Liu Huilan and Lu Zihau already pinned down by them, Lu Zhengjun realized these people meant trouble. He dropped his backpack and swung his fists at them.
Having maintained a fitness routine and previously worked as a sanda coach for several years, Lu Zhengjun's physical condition was on par with that of younger men. With just a few punches and kicks, he knocked down two of the men in front of him.
Noticing Lu Zhengjun's fighting skills, the remaining members of the group rushed in to overwhelm him with their numbers. Soon, Lu Zhengjun found himself entangled in a fierce struggle with them.
